Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk. For examples of how to properly categorize images, please see here and here. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 03:02, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- This is your final warning. If you continue to upload images without properly categorizing them, I will block you from uploading. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:51, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- All my previously uploaded images have been categorized by year and which subway system it was photographed. I will use this to categorize future images. IliketrainsR211T (talk) 20:21, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thus far you have added nonexistent categories (that duplicate existing categories that other users have added) and duplicate categories. This does not give me any confidence that you understand how to categorize images correctly. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:34, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- What would be an example of a correct way of categorizing images? IliketrainsR211T (talk) 21:16, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- I already gave you examples in my comment above. It is disappointing to see that you did not read it before replying. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:32, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Is there a way to check some of my more recent images from this month to see if I am doing this correctly? If so, please check Wellington and Downtown Crossing orange line images to clarify. IliketrainsR211T (talk) 21:52, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- I have no idea what you're trying to do, but your edits are increasingly nonsensical. Why are you adding duplicate license information, and adding categories that are already on the file page, and replacing specific categories with less specific categories? Please read Commons:Categories thoroughly before you make any more edits. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:57, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Look for the new category of images here: Category:MBTA New Rolling Stock. I am still adding images to this. IliketrainsR211T (talk) 02:16, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- I have figured out how to make my own categories now. I am coming up with titles to upload new images under these in the future. IliketrainsR211T (talk) 02:35, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- At this point, I am blocking you from all file and category editing. You have proceeded to make a number of absolutely unnecessary categories, most of which duplicate existing categories that are already on the files, and all but one of which have incorrectly capitalized names. None of the category edits you've made so far have been productive, and it's unclear why you are making these strange edits. Are you not able to see the categories that are already on each file page? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:31, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, Can you explain in details what you intend to do? Thanks, Yann (talk) 12:36, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- I was recently blocked from uploading and editing files for "persistently refusing to categorize them", something that I did not know about in the first place. I tried to add categories to these images myself, but AI has been criticizing these categories as "nonsensical". I would like to explore what categories to put these images into when uploading future images, but I need to be unblocked in order to do this. IliketrainsR211T (talk) 1:42, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Wellington MBTA Orange Line Station, April 2024.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Unblock discussion
[edit]I'm willing to give you a chance if you can understand and apply the category system. You seem to be interested in trains, so please do the following:
- Pick two random images from the Flickr page at [1] that you feel you can categorise properly if they were uploaded on Commons. Link the URLs of the images in your response.
- Read Commons:Categories fully, in particular pay attention to the "Categorization tips" and "How to categorize" sections
- Find and link the appropriate categories for each image with the syntax :Category:name of category in your response
If you can do so successfully, this will show some understanding of the category system, and it gives us grounds that could lead to unblock. Also, any more socking and you will remain indefinitely blocked. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 16:06, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
- Is there a way to figure out which images in the Flickr link, if any, have been uploaded on Commons? IliketrainsR211T (talk) 23:24, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- @IliketrainsR211T: you can check the license on the right - if it says "All rights reserved", or a Creative Commons license with "NonCommercial" or "NoDerivative" in it it's not on Commons since the license is incompatible. Even if it says a license that's compatible with Commons, I wouldn't worry about it - we're just seeing if you can use categories, not the intricacies of the Flickr licensing system. I'll assume you're not looking up images via Commons, but please don't, that defeats the point of this. Just use any image on the Flickr page I linked that you think you can categorise properly. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? -

- @IliketrainsR211T: This is better than once you started uploading images (i.e. not providing categories), but as Pi.1415926535 pointed out, the categories are still too broad. Read "Modularity principle" section from COM:CATPRI, and please do the same procedure with two more images of your choice from the Flickr link I provided above. Avoid broad categories like Category:MBTA Commuter Rail unless absolutely required. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? -

- @Taivo, Yann, Elcobbola, and Pi.1415926535: IMO the above is, per COM:BP, is a "credible promise that the behaviour that led to the block will not be repeated" (i.e. they clearly understand categories now). The acknowledgement of the issue is in the second unblock request from the top. Think it's a good idea to give some metaphorical rope. Fine to unblock? —Matrix(!) {user - talk? -

- @Matrix: I still see a lack of understanding of category hierarchy. Two categories for the first image are too broad (Category:MBTA Commuter Rail and Category:MBTA Fitchburg Line), and the more specific Category:Fitchburg Line trains is missing. One category for the second image is too broad (Category:MBTA Newburyport/Rockport Line). This would still require cleanup by other users. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:16, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

- That looks correct to me. I would support an unblock with one additional reminder: to check the coordinates on your images when uploading. GPS on phones and cameras is not perfectly accurate in cities, especially underground; many of your uploads have coordinate errors of hundreds of feet or more. If the coordinates are not exactly where you were standing when you took the photo, you will need to correct or remove them. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:50, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Re: upscaling
[edit]hello,
I noticed you recently upscaled several photos (such as the Copley station one). I would ask you to reconsider and considering reverting those edits, as they look pretty bad up close, and I believe the originals looked better and had more than enough resolution.
For example, on your Copley photo:
Look at the car number (#3907) between the original and the upscaled/processed versions and how the upscaling distorts it. Also look at the details on the people and notice how unnatural it looks on the upscaled ones. I would strongly advise you against doing more upscaling, since I don’t think it’s doing the image any favors.
MOS:IMAGES generally recommends against AI upscaling:
” AI upscaling software should generally not be used to increase the resolution or quality of an old or low-resolution image. Original historical images should always be used in place of AI upscaled versions. If an AI-upscaled image is used in an article, this fact should be noted in its caption.” 4300streetcar (talk) 12:37, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I just reverted the Copley image to its original form. IliketrainsR211T (talk) 13:38, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I have reverted the remainder of the images that you upscaled. AI upscaling is inherently inappropriate for photos on Commons. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:43, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
