Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hei! Commonsissa on suositeltavaa merkitä päivämäärät ISO 8601 -standardin mukaisessa muodossa VVVV-KK-PP (tai VVVV-KK, jos merkitään vain vuosi ja kuukausi). 25. kesäkuuta 2011 merkitään siis 2011-06-25 ja kesäkuu 2011 merkitään 2011-06. Asiahan tuntuu selkeältä, mutta kertoisitko esimerkin, missä luokittelu on tehty huonosti, niin pääsen kärryille paremmin. Toinen kysymys, tuosta Kauvatsan sankarimuistimerkin kuvan poistosta: Olen törmännyt monien kuvanveistäjien teoskuviin Wikissä. Tekijänoikeus keskusteluista ei mulle aukea milloin tuo itseottamat valokuvat JULKISISTA veistoksista ovat sallittuja Wikissä ja milloin eivät? Hotarju (talk) 16:07, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Esim. tämä kuva oli alun perin sekä luokassa Kirkkonummi Church että Kirkkonummi. Ensiksi mainittuhan on jälkimmäisen alaluokka.
Julkisesta veistoksesta itse otettujen valokuvien osalta asia riippuu lähinnä neljästä asiasta:
  • Missä maassa kuva on otettu? (Noudatetaan kyseisen maan lainsäädäntöä.)
  • Onko veistoksen tekijänoikeus vielä voimassa? (Tämä taas riippuu yleisimmin siitä, kuinka pitkä aika on kulunut kuvanveistäjän kuolemasta?)
  • Onko veistos kuvan keskeinen elementti?
  • Ylittääkö veistos teoskynnyksen?
Ensinnäkin maa: Joissain maissa on niin sanottu panoraamavapaus (engl. Freedom of panorama, saks. Panoramafreiheit). Näissä maissa julkisia veistoksia saa kuvata vapaasti ja kuvia myös käyttää vapaasti myös kaupallisiin tarkoituksiin. Tällaisia maita on esimerkiksi Saksa. Suomessa panoraamavapaus koskee vain rakennuksia mutta ei esimerkiksi veistoksia (Tekijänoikeuslaki 25 a §). Suomessakin julkisia veistoksia saa kyllä kuvata vapaasti, mutta kuvien käyttö ansiotarkoituksessa on kielletty ilman tekijän lupaa, joten tällaiset kuvat eivät Commonsiinkaan kelpaa. Commonsin Freedom of panorama -sivulla on suhteellisen kattava lista maista, joissa on panoraamavapaus sekä maininnat sen mahdollisista rajoituksista.
Jos maassa ei ole panoraamavapautta, joudutaan tarkastelemaan sitä, onko tekijänoikeus vielä voimassa. Eli tekijänoikeus ei ole voimassa ikuisesti, vaan se vanhenee. Suomessa (ja useimmissa muissa maissa) tekijänoikeus vanhenee, kun 70 vuotta on kulunut tekijän kuolinvuodesta (Tekijänoikeuslaki 43 §). Eli tänä vuonna Commonsiin voi tallentaa Suomessa otettuja kuvia vuonna 1941 ja sitä ennen kuolleiden kuvanveistäjien ja muiden taitelijoiden teoksista. Näin ollen esim. Havis Amandasta otettuja kuvia on voinut vapaasti tallentaa Commonsiin viime vuoden alusta lukien. (Kuvanveistäjä Ville Vallgren on kuollut vuonna 1940.) Sinä näytät kuvaavan pääasiassa Suomessa sijaitsevia sankarihautamuistomerkkejä ja niiden osalta tekijänoikeus ei ole vielä vanhentunut. (Sota on päättynyt 1945 eli alle 70 vuotta sitten.) Näin ollen niistä otettuja kuvia ei pääsääntöisesti voi Commonsiin tallentaa.
Ainakin Suomessa edelliseen on kuitenkin poikkeus. Panoraamavapaus on voimassa, jos veistos ei ole kuvan keskeinen elementti. Näin ollen uskoisin, että esim. tässä kuvassa ei ole mitään ongelmaa, koska kyseessä on yleiskuva sankarihaudoista ja muistomerkki on vain kuvan osa. (Rajanveto tässä on vaikeaa, joten voin olla väärässäkin.)
Jotta taideteokseen (esim. veistokseen) ylipäätään sovelletaan tekijänoikeutta, tulee sen täyttää ns. teoskynnys. Ts. sen tulee olla riittävän omaperäinen. Käytännössä rima lienee aika matalalla, mutta esim. hautamuistomerkit saattavat joskus olla niin yksinkertaisia, että ne jäävät teoskynnyksen alle. Tällöin niiden kuvia pitäisi voida tallentaa vapaasti Commonsiin. (Jälleen rajanveto on kuitenkin vaikeaa.)
Lisäksi tekijänoikeuksien alaisistakin teoksista otettuja kuvia voi tietysti tallentaa Commonsiin, jos tekijältä (esim. kuvanveistäjältä) tai hänen oikeudenomistajiltaan on saatu suostumus kuvan julkaisemiseen esim. CC-BY-SA-lisenssillä. Esim. tämän kuvan tapauksessa muistomerkin tekijä on antanut tällaisen luvan, ja silloin ongelmaa taas ei ole. Jos kysyt luvan, on tärkeää, että jokin Commonsin hyväksymä lisenssi mainitaan luvassa. Pelkkä "saa tallentaa Wikipediaan"- tai "saa tallentaa Commonsiin" -lupa ei riitä. Erittäin hyvää tietoa, kiitokset. Siis julkisella veistoksella ei ole merkitystä? Tuon Kauvatsan kirkon sankaripatsaan jälkeen olen noudattanut tuota tapaa, itsellä tietenkin on paljonkin kuvia itse patsaista. Mutta vielä esimerkki Wikin sivuilta, (näihin törmään aika usein kun harrastuksena kuvanveistäjiä tutkiskelen). Miten tulkitset ko. kuvassa olevan tekijänoikeustiedon [[1]]

Commonsiin tuota kuvaa ei voisi tallentaa, ellei ole kuvanveistäjän tai hänen oikeudenomistajansa lupaa. Kuva on tallennettu suomenkieliseen Wikipediaan, ja siellä kuvan käyttö sallitaan rajoitetusti tekijänoikeuslain 25 §:n] perusteella. Commons on kuitenkin tarkoitettu myös yleiseksi vapaiden kuvien kuvavarastoksi, joten siksi rajoitukset ovat tiukemmat. Your account will be renamed

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Hotarju. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Hotarju~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
