Ravenala madagascariensis Picture

[edit]

Hello, I believe that the plants in teh picture you have uploaded as Ravenala madagascariensis are in fact Strelitzia nicholai, which, up close are very similar. Do you have any objection to my altering their name and placing in the relevant article in Wikipedia? Many thanks HelloMojo 10:40, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A question -- Your ice sheet map indicates that Los Angeles faced winter sea ice offshore, yet the fauna and flora from the La Brea tar pits indicate a more moderate temperature. Can you explain your reasoning? 68.5.64.178 08:42, 6 August 2006 (UTC) (Scott Adler)[reply]

  • this graf is not a scientific publication - it is just a very principle and raw scetch about maximum glaciation - as an imaginated result from what paleoclimatologists have found and discussed. LA is given just for geographic orientation.

Ice Sheet Map

[edit]

Thanks for the ice sheet map. Two areas for improvement: doesn't note the year (is it the last glacial maximum?), and doesn't show the altered coastlines.

  • see coment above. description says Northern hemisphere glaciation during the last ice ages. This is a principle scetch, not a scientifc reconstruction of the last glacial maximum or altered coastlines. (i would appreciate comments from identified users, not from IP-No)

Hallo!

Nice butterflies

[edit]

Hi, thanks for the nice pictures of butterflies. I have one question (what is the F in F. Demos ?) and one suggestion : you could create a category where to put all these images, for instance "Europas bekannteste Schmetterlinge" or "Franz Demos" or whatever the correct name is.. Frédéric 21:36, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

there are many publications where only the initial of the first name is given. i also prefer full names but due to the fact, that this book is more than 100 years old, there is no way to find out who F. was. from my opinion, a category just for one book does not make sense. a category butterflies of europe would make sense. Hello. I've made the category because i hope that someone else will add more photos to create something similar to Category:Henryk Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station. In the mean time i've liked the category that i've created in the italian wiki page of the base. Regards, --Hal8999 13:00, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

sorry but the definition of categories should not be based on hope but on structure and usefullness. a category for one single antarctic station is not usefull because there will be few images; one for Antarctic stations would make sense. Hannes Grobe 09:43, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dessication Cracks -- Incredible!

Your picture of dessication cracks is incredible, amazing work! Just two questions, what is the scale on that image? And also, what exactly is the "sludge"? -- PerryTachett's Wikipedia account

blurring is ok but why cutting the second person away Schumacher ist talking to? In this way the artist looks silly. may I suggest to reload the complete image (with the painting blurred). Hello Hgrobe/archive!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 12:47, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

thank you for this notification. i am aware about the problem and i am categorizing my images when ever i have the time. Hannes Grobe (talk) 09:57, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Katabatischer Wind

[edit]

Hallo Hannes Grobe,

I would like to ask your opinion on wether the term Katabatic Wind in English is the same as Katabatischer Wind auf Deutsch. And what is the difference between Fall Wind und Katabatischer Wind. IsFari (talk) 21:32, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Katabatischer Wind in German is correct (see german wikipedia). Katabatischer Wind ist ein spezieller Fallwind. Hannes Grobe (talk) 17:55, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Danke, I had seen the article in german wikipedia, and previously made the interwiki-link between en:Katabatic Wind and de:Katabatischer Wind, but some robot undid my change, hence my doubts about the subject. I 'll try and fix it. And maybe try to find some sources explaining the different meaning of these types of wind.
Oh, and thanx for the nice graph on English wiki. IsFari (talk) 10:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Donauwelle

[edit]

Hallo!

Hannes Grobe (talk) 16:23, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

sorry - there is no direct link to this image. if you use http://planktonnet.awi.de/ and type in Noctiluca scintillans. you will find both images in the first line. click on it will give you the specific cc-by 3.0 license for those images which does NOT include a NC. Hallo Hgrobe,

Fabian

Hello, Hgrobe!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, Hannes Grobe, you have uploaded a lot of images today. Thanks for that. On the other hand, almost all of them seem to be missing a description and some categories. They would be much more useful, if you please could add description and categories to these images, see your page for a list of images to check for description and categories. Unless description and categories are added, it will be difficult to find and use your images. I ran across your gallery, as many of today's uncategorized images have been uploaded by you. Pinguineier

[edit]

Danke --Jutta234 (talk) 16:57, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gruß --Jutta234 (talk) 22:11, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, ich habe heute Antwort vom Frankurter Zoo bekommen. Recht kurz:
Gruß --Jutta234 (talk) 14:16, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hannes Grobe (talk) 17:13, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
--Jutta234 (talk) 17:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. File:Aptenodytes patagonicus egg hg.jpg is not a very typical egg for a King penguin. The two species in fact have very similar eggs and apart from the size are rather undistinguishable. Cheers. Lycaon (talk) 17:45, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you've uploaded File:Southfrance-1987-0020 hg.jpg and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!

Max Kohl catalogue

[edit]

Hi, thank you for uploading the Max Kohl catalogue. But could you move them out of Category:Physics instruments and technology to the subcategory Category:Max Kohl catalogues that I just made? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 15:38, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

i am uncertain about the procedure. new categories are produce all the time. i do not think, that the provider of images should track those and should care for the new linking. that might keep image providers quite busy. Hannes Grobe (talk) 11:00, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should make new separate categories when you upload so many similar images. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 11:20, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for your advice. if you say "i think ..." - is there any official regulation in commons on how to define categories and in particular about the usefullness of the granularity of subcategories? Hannes Grobe (talk) 13:58, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It depends a bit. For people, some contributors start a category even if there is only one image. That may be a good idea because it helps contributors that upload a different image at a later time, but my limit is two images of the same person. For other subjects the limit is higher, but as soon as one can fill a screen (10 or 20 images), a new category is worth considering. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 16:41, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the job of moving the catalogue pages out of Category:Physics instruments and technology. Islandbilder

[edit]

Hallo hgrobe!

Pictures of Yemen

[edit]

Hi Hgrobe, I have seen you have imported many pictures from Yemen. It is a nice addition. Unfortunately you have put all of them in the Category:Yemen. This category is a main category. All pictures of Yemen should be put in subcategories of the category:Yemen. It would be appreciated if you could put your pictures in the right subcategory. Thanks a lot. --Bgag (talk) 18:50, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Southfrance

[edit]

Hannes Grobe (talk) 19:04, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Request for Historia Publishing, Paris

[edit]

Historia printing are working on a light numerical support for 6 to 8 years old children. The topic is Ulysses and his journeys.

Ulysses story will be told with drawings. But the author also wants a photographic support from time to time.

To illustrate this purpose, we should like to reproduce your photo about Djerba.

Would you be kind enough to give us your agreement.

This project is still experimental. The application on Apple store will be sold no more than 4 €. That means we have no money left for the pictures. We should understand a negative answer, of course. In the contrary, if you accept our proposal, your credit line will be printed and we’ll send you a copy.

Be sure we shall be grateful for the attention you’ll paid to our request.

Best regards. Claire Segura Picture Researcher Sofia Publications/ Historia

Dear Claire - please make yourself familiar with the use policy of wikipedia images. all images are free to use for any purpose - it is just required to properly cite the author. Please cite my images as: Hannes Grobe/AWI - Kind regards

Cheers! --Gretarsson (talk) 16:34, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Hi Hgrobe - could you split up User:Hgrobe/gallery into about ten sub-galleries, please? It is so large in makes my computer crash if I try to open it. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 19:16, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

this page is a personal view on my uploads. but you are right, its now quite lengthy. i will try to divide it. thank you! due to the fact that you are an admin on commons - how many images per page max would you recommend? Hannes Grobe (talk) 18:25, 27 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Hgrobe,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Um welches Lotsenhaus handelt es sich?

[edit]

vielen Dank! Habe Deine Beschreibung dem Titel hinzugefügt. Hannes Grobe (talk) 17:15, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Kamerun in 1969

Hallo Hgrobe,

Vielen Dank

sehr gern - verwenden Sie meine Bilder wie auch immer benötigt Hannes Grobe (talk) 13:06, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:Queen logo.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Anfrage zur Kupferscheibe von Helgoland

[edit]

Hannes Grobe (talk) 18:56, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unknown locations

[edit]

Hi Hgrobe, Thank you for posting so many wonderful photos from your travels. Having photos like these from the 1960, 70s and 80s are so valuable since copyright laws make it so difficult to get photos from this period. I have been trying to correctly tag some of these images with dates and locations but some are a little difficult. Some from 1965 simply say "Somewhere in Southeast Asia " ([[5]]) and there are some some from Hong Kong that don't give many details but look like they are from a refugee camp ([[6]]). If you could add any additional description to these historical images it would be very helpful and I will keep trying to provide correct tags and incorporate them into Wikipedia articles. Thanks!Monopoly31121993(2) (talk) 15:35, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

sorry to say but there is no more information left. thank you for tagging. Hannes Grobe (talk) 18:58, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Apple iWork-06 hg.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!
