Dear Gust Justice, Thanks for your great contributions to the Wikipedia page about Danish elections. Currently I'm writing a paper about the Danish electoral system, for which I would like to create a simular map, but for the Netherlands (with the hypothetical electoral provinces and the little bubbles that represent awarded seats). As such I was wondering whether you could maybe explain to me how to make such a map myself? Thanks for the award. For making the maps I start by making the base map. There are other ways you can do this, but I get the files from a government website, edit it to a vector format with QGIS, and then edit it with Inkscape. As for the result, I insert the appropriate number of circles into the electoral districts and then fill in the results based on official sources.

As for the Netherlands, I would probably recommend between 12 and 20 electoral districts. Having the districts correspond to the provinces would be easiest to do. You have districts composed of municipalities but doing so would probably make it harder to calculate the results.

You can use File:Netherlands provinces map blank.svg as a base map and then just copy the circles that I’ve used on my maps onto that. Opening .svg files from Wikimedia is a bit more complicated than it needs to be, but it essentially involves going to the page, pressing CTRL+U, copying the content onto notepad, and then saving as .svg.

Danish Elections

Hi!

I love the polling place maps you've made for the 2019 and 2021 elections - those are quite rare on Wikipedia. Can I ask where you got the shapefile? I haven't been able to find one myself, as it's quite difficult as a monolingual English speaker.

2022 Lower Saxony election map

Leveling seats are additional seats to counter overhang mandates; the bottom left shows the regular list seats + leveling seats. I also would suggest adding a highlight for both the Oldenburg (2) and Braunschweig (3) City seats Maxwhollymoralground (talk) 22:23, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Sweden

Hi! I’m curious as to how you colored the map of the Swedish polling areas. What application did you use to make it? 213.113.146.68 19:28, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Essentially I edited the svg code to color the individual shapes by ID. I generated this code using an excel spreadsheet and the officially published results. I didn't use any software beyond that. If you want I can elaborate further. Gust Justice (talk) 19:33, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

I can try to explain how I code in the color of any single polling area. The svg is exported so that each shape has an ID corresponding to the official ID used by the electoral authority. I did this using mapshaper.org, where you can export from shapefiles to .svg. The shapefiles are published at https://val.se/. What I then do in excel is to associate each polling area with a color used on the map. This is done using the officially published results and som formulas. Once I have the colors associated with each polling area and the polling area's ID, I use a formula to output css code that can be inserted into the vector file. It looks like this: #01140000{fill:#f68996;} Here "#01140000" represents the polling area ID corresponding to polling area 01140000. "#f68996" is the color code corresponding to a polling area where the Social Democrats poll at 25-30% of the vote.

At the end the code inserted into the .svg file should look something like:

2011 Danish election map

2019 and 2023 Spanish General Election

Your graphic is great, but in the constituency of Murcia the PP got an seat which isn‘t shown at the right place (2019). And same constitusensy in 2023 but for no party as of now. 37.24.254.52 19:19, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

UK New boundaries

Hi; noticed you removed the background from the map i posted. You may not have noticed but it was there as it was the best way i could think of at the time to clip the boundaries to the coast. I don't know if you know how to do this without using an overlay (it was too many points to just subtract) but if you do then it'd be great if you could? Spanish 2023 Election Map

I can't really give a complete guide, but at its core you can do all of it in Inkscape, which I use to make all of my maps. My encouragement to anyone wanting to make vector election maps is to just get started and learn as you go. As to the individual elements, such as the circles and color bars, it requires learning how you create those in Inkscape, for which guides exist. The base map itself can be made in multiple ways. For anyone getting startest the easiest is to just download those that exist on Wikimedia Commons. Otherwise you may need to use other software or manually trace the boundaries of the maps. Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. I actually had not considered doing choropleth maps for older elections. I definitely would be able to do it, at least for the elections going back to 1979, for which the data is released in a machine readable format. Folkeafstemning 1971 - Opstillingskredse.svg

I think you might be conflating the two. Folkeafstemning 1971 - Opstillingskredse.svg is for the 1971 Danish electoral age referendum. The file for the 1972 EEC referendum is File:Folkeafstemning 1972 - Opstillingskredse.svg, where Greenland is colored with the 70%+ rejecting color. 2023 Spanish election map - Ourense

Hi, the final results in Ourense give the PP 50.04% of the vote, meaning the colour shades of the province and the text next to it in this map have to be changed (they should use the shades used for Lugo). Spanish general election maps - Anchuras exclave

Hello there, I just noticed that the Spanish general election maps (except the one depicting the results of the latest one) have a small error, since the Ciudad Real exclave of Anchuras [2] is colored the same way as the province of Badajoz. @MP DDT Thanks for pointing it out and for the feedback. I have been vaguely aware that there are minor inaccuracies with the base map I have used for the Spanish election maps. I haven't fixed it because I don't know how many such instances there are.

2024 Polish local election map

Hi, The Left coalition (New Left, Left Together, PPS, Labour Union, MJN and others) stands to the 2024 local elections under the name KKW Lewica, therefore "NL" initialism for New Left party (Nowa Lewica) seams unappropriate. Croatia election map

Good job on your election map. I’think your unique ring-layout work’s especially well in systems where each district are the same seat magnitude.

I had actually originally made up the format for File:2018 Polish voivodeship sejmik elections.svg, but ended up not making use of it, as I was unsure how well it would work for elections with different seat magnitudes. Error in 2021 Iceland election map

Hello! Thanks for making File:Althing2021.svg. I see there is an error though. The Centre Party (M) did not win a seat in the Southwest district. That circle should be colored orange for the Reform Party (C). On the flipside, there is a district seat in the South district which is coloured for party C when it should be party M. 2024 EU parliament election map (Poland)

Hi please shade Poland in EPP's color I don't know why it's in ECR's when the EU website confirms that EPP is largest and also their member KO won the largest vote share Octilllion (talk) 12:21, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

It actually is colored in the EPP's shading for 40-45%. I know dark blue is how the ECR is often depicted, but on the map ECR is colored slightly more purple compared to the EPP. This is isn't ideal, but is what I found to be the best way of shading by vote share without the colors overlapping too much. Gust Justice (talk) 17:46, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

How do you do those maps??

Hello, Sorry for this question that can seem quite stupid but what do you use to do those maps (i mean like a software) and where do you find the layers ? I would like to try doing my owns but I dont know where to start. Thanks in avance ! Dadadumas (talk) 15:13, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

I should probably do a full guide at some point, but here is a very rough summary: As you mention, I start with getting the base map. Sometimes you can get this from existing files on Wikimedia Commons, other times you need to download a shapefile, typically from the government of the country in question, and rarely I have even had to painstakingly draw the boundaries myself. If you get a shapefile, i recommend using https://mapshaper.org/. There you can change the projection, simplify the shapes if needed, and most importantly, download the map as a .svg. Once you have a .svg I use Inkscape to make the map itself. There you can quite easily change the colors of the shapes (constituencies, counties, municipalities, etc.) and add other elements as appropriate. Overall I would recommend just getting started and trying it out! The way I learned to make election maps in Inkscape was by copying the styles others had used and then gradually learning more and more things. Gust Justice (talk) 23:32, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
