Hi, Please add categories. Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:06, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

@Yann: Done, thank you for the quick response on the undeletion. Gazoth (talk) 21:16, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
File:Flight deck of INS Vikramaditya.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi, Please do not remove information. I think it is best to keep the Flickr source, and the licensing from Flickr. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:10, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

@Yann: Ok, I will not remove the source, but is keeping the CC-BY-SA 2.0 license a good choice? CC-BY-SA 2.0 is a more permissive license in some aspects when compared to GODL-India as it does not have some of the restrictions that GODL-India contains. As a result, GODL-India is probably incompatible with CC-BY-SA 2.0. Since the original deletion rationale was that posting the images to Flickr wasn't sufficient permission for relicensing to CC-BY-SA 2.0, why should we claim dual licensing? —Gazoth (talk) 21:58, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
OK, good point. The images from the Flickr stream were deleted, as it was not sure who were the authors, and if they were allowed to publish them under a free license. IMHO, the deletion was a rather bad decision, but there was some uncertainty. Now we know that, whoever are the authors, they are allowed to publish them under GODL, so the images are OK for Commons. I will ask on COM:VPC about the possible incompatibility of both licenses. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:19, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

GazothBot

Hi @Gazoth: When will GazothBot starts its full-scale operations.:) Perumalism (talk) 11:40, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

@Perumalism: You can track the current status at Commons:Bots/Requests/GazothBot. I was asked to create and add {{Institution}} templates for all the different PIB creators, about 77 of them. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to spare till next week, so I won't be able to spend much time on it until then. If you want to help, you can create categories and institution templates for each of the ministries at w:Union Government ministries of India similar to Category:Ministry of Tourism (India) and Institution:Ministry of Tourism (India) using the Wikidata item number from the corresponding wiki page. I have created 12 of them so far, but quite a few are left. —Gazoth (talk) 13:45, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
@Gazoth: I have create around 45 category and Institutions.List of category and Institutions need to be created mentioned below.
@Perumalism: Thank you, you've saved me a lot of effort. I'll take care of the rest. —Gazoth (talk) 23:28, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

PIB files in narendramodiofficial Flickr stream

Hi,@Gazoth: I assume that files which have Exif data in narendramodiofficial Flickr stream are from PIB and rest of the files are from elsewhere. Perumalism (talk) 21:57, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

@Perumalism: That's a reasonable assumption to make, if by EXIF data you mean actually useful data like caption, author, camera model and shot details. —Gazoth (talk) 22:17, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, Creation date from exif data is useful to locate the image in PIB site Perumalism (talk) 22:44, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Bot PIB uploads

What about duplicates aleady here? Admins will have fun deleting those.--BevinKacon (talk) 18:14, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

@BevinKacon: Exact duplicates will not be uploaded. If there are downscaled or upscaled versions of images from PIB, the bot will upload them as a new image as there is no simple programmatic way to identify scaled images. These will have to be handled manually. —Gazoth (talk) 18:22, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Other users have already uploaded photos from PIB before the bot, so the bot will also upload the same ones.--BevinKacon (talk) 18:24, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
@BevinKacon: As I mentioned before, exact duplicates will not be uploaded. For example, File:Deve Gowda and Manmohan Singh.jpg was uploaded in 2014. The bot identified it as a duplicate and did not upload it. You can see it skipping ID 3490 if you check the bot's contributions. —Gazoth (talk) 18:33, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Cool.--BevinKacon (talk) 18:37, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

PIB Photo ID

Hey Gazoth, can you help me find the PIB Photo ID for this picture. I have so far been unable to find it. Thanks. SshibumXZ (talk) 17:15, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

@SshibumXZ: I have added the other IDs to the template. You can use http://pib.nic.in/newsite/archivephoto.aspx to find the old ID ("idv1") and http://pib.nic.in/PhotoCategories.aspx?MenuId=8 for the new ID ("idv2"). —Gazoth (talk) 17:42, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Gazoth okay, thanks man!
SshibumXZ (talk) 17:55, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
@SshibumXZ: I forgot to mention an easier way to get the ID. If you have the image URL, you can get the IDs from the file name too. If the file name is of the format sYYYYMMDDxxxxx.jpg or lYYYYMMDDxxxxx.jpg, the remaining digits after the first 7 9 characters is the old ID ("idv1"). In the above image's URL — http://pibphoto.nic.in/photo//2017/May/l20170502101832.jpg — the last 6 digits, that is 101832 is the old ID. If you have a newer image URL similar to http://164.100.117.97/WriteReadData/Gallery/PhotoGallery/2017/May/H2017050216714.JPG or a file name of the format HYYYYMMDDxxxxx.JPG or TYYYYMMDDxxxxx.JPG, similar rule applies, but what you get is the new ID ("idv2"). In the second URL's file name ("H2017050216714.JPG") if you drop the first 7 9 characters, the remaining digits are 16714 which was the ID that you found. I should probably add this to {{ID-PIB}}'s documentation at some point to make it easy for other editors to use the template. —Gazoth (talk) 18:09, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Gazoth duly noted.

Press Information Bureau needing categories

Hi @Gazoth: Once the 129,000+ images of PIB transferred to Commons, Will GazothBot upload day to day update from PIB Perumalism (talk) 10:13, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

@Perumalism: Yes, I plan to configure it to run daily to upload new images. —Gazoth (talk) 11:55, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
@Gazoth: Ok, I think daily uploads should placed in category such as 'Images from Press Information Bureau needing categories as of XXX(Month) 2018' for easy categorizing. Reasonable? Thanks Perumalism (talk) 12:06, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
@Perumalism: Sure, that can be done. —Gazoth (talk) 12:07, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
Gazoth On this issue, can we incorporate other categories as well in the upload script. I did see that you have ones for the Prime Ministers and Presidents. I think this can be extended using regex to other commonly occurring ones as well. One thing I have noticed is that even though the names might be not self describing, each image has metadata which most times tends to correctly represent the people in the image. This can be very useful and allow us to to automate about 70% of categorization. For example, the Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, Chief of Staffs of the Armed Forces and Governors. This categorization can also be run as bot on the already existing images. Does PyWikiBot allow you to push a CSV file as well in which we can maintain the mapping between names and Commons categories? I can help populate a good chunk of this after September. Thought? Adamgerber80 (talk) 15:01, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
@Adamgerber80: I did consider that, but the list of people was too large and a lot of categories did not exist. There was also a problem of unpredictable spelling in PIB captions, which differed from what is used in Wikipedia articles. The only categories that I added to the script were of the format people by year or people by month, year. Now, we have maintained a list of categories at User:GazothBot/Categories, although it only covers GoI ministers as of now. Feel free to add to it if you think it needs to be expanded. Pywikibot framework doesn't support any such CSV-backed mapping, but adding code to do so is quite possible. If a decent-sized list is built, I'll add some code to load the CSV file and perform the categorization. —Gazoth (talk) 15:31, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
Gazoth Hi, any updates regarding month wise categories for day to day files from PIB, Thankyou Perumalism (talk) 13:54, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
@Perumalism: I can update the {{Uncategorized-PIB}} template to split the files to month-wise categories, but that'll apply to all files uploaded since August. There is no way to split only the newly uploaded files short of creating a new uncategorised template and applying that to new uploads going forward. If you're fine with splitting all files into month-wise categories, I'll change the template now. —Gazoth (talk) 13:59, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
@Gazoth: I think we can wait until files in Category:Images from Press Information Bureau needing categories falls below 20,000 files Perumalism (talk) 14:26, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Image not found. Please re-upload. Thanks. —Sarvatra (talk) 05:45, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

@Sarvatra: It looks like a server error. I tried to re-upload the image, but I got a duplicate image error. This means that the file was correctly uploaded, but Commons server is not able to retrieve the image for some reason. I'll force upload it again if the issue is not fixed by tomorrow. —Gazoth (talk) 06:13, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Need help with an image

So I found this image of Air Marshal H S Arora, using google image search. It is from pibphoto.nic.in . Do you know where I can find an hd image for this? Thanks —Sarvatra (talk) 04:43, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

I found the hd version here from this article but I guess we can't use it. —Sarvatra (talk) 05:05, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
@Sarvatra: That is kind of a grey area. If there is sufficient confidence that the image was a Government of India work, you can upload higher resolution versions even if you found them on third-party websites. —Gazoth (talk) 05:11, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
@Gazoth: Are images from twitter upload by Indian Air Force official account covered under GODL-India ? —Sarvatra (talk) 08:01, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
@Sarvatra: See this discussion. —Gazoth (talk) 14:00, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm afraid there isn't a way to get a better image from that link. The image URL that you posted was embedded in a press release, and there is no way to get a higher resolution image of that. If the image was from the "Photos" section, it'd be a different matter. —Gazoth (talk) 05:10, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
@Gazoth: Okay the same image has been uploaded by PIB (Photo ID :131790). So once it is uploaded by gazothbot, I'll add it to the article. Thanks. —Sarvatra (talk) 04:51, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
@Sarvatra: I have uploaded these images manually. You can add them to the article. Adamgerber80 (talk) 09:42, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Full stop?

Hi Gazoth, can you tell me why i see from time to time Hindi file descriptions ending with | like in this case File:Pawan Kumar Chamling calling on the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (IC), Prime Minister’s Office, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in New Delhi.jpg. This leads to a parsing error. Is | like a full stop in Hindi? --Arnd (talk) 10:49, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

@Aschroet: Yes, | is a full stop in Hindi. Thanks for alerting me to this, I'll modify the script to swap out the vertical bar with {{!}}. —Gazoth (talk) 14:51, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

GazothBot

What's up with GazothBot? Retired? —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 12:26, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

@Sarvatra: Not exactly retired. It broke because the PIB website changed something, but I haven't fixed it yet as there are tons of images that were uploaded previously that aren't categorized yet. I cannot spend much time on categorization and cannot take the responsibility for it. If someone is willing to do so, I can fix the bot to start uploading again. —Gazoth (talk) 15:32, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
@Gazoth: I see. I'll have a look at Category:Images from Press Information Bureau needing categories. Thanks. —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 13:12, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
I have asked people at Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics for some help. Meanwhile, I'm looking at Category:Images from Press Information Bureau needing category review. I looked up several images in that category, but didn't get why they need to be reviewed when they already had a category assigned to them. Can you please fill me in? —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 13:34, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
@Sarvatra: The categories for images in Category:Images from Press Information Bureau needing category review were added by the bot, which put images in appropriate month or year categories when it detected the name of Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh, Pratibha Patil or Pranab Mukherjee in the description. I felt that it'd be appropriate to request review for these images as the caption might contain their names despite them not being in the picture. If the community feels otherwise, then the tags can be removed and errant categorizations can be fixed whenever they are encountered. —Gazoth (talk) 16:41, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

it's not violation — Preceding unsigned comment added by Includents.h (talk • contribs) 18:48, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

@Includents.h: It is a copyright violation. As you don't own the rights to the images that you are uploading, you cannot relicense it. Read Commons:Licensing and Commons:Copyright rules. If you want to upload an image under fair use for a Wikipedia article, Commons is NOT the right place to do it. Read w:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria and follow the instruction in that article. —Gazoth (talk) 18:57, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
Hmm you tell me how to do it right as DD website says its content of online website could be used to educate and for education. Includents.h (talk) 19:04, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
@Includents.h: As I've already mentioned, you can upload fair use images on Wikipedia (NOT Commons) in accordance with w:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. Read that page to understand the limitations of the policy and what content is permissible to be uploaded under it. —Gazoth (talk) 19:09, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

@Includents.h: As I've already told you, three times now, read w:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. —Gazoth (talk) 19:19, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

How to add image for logo of school and Television ?

There are logo of starplus and others but you dont remove them ? Includents.h (talk) 19:03, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

The logo for w:Star Plus was uploaded on Wikipedia, not on Commons. It was uploaded under fair use in accordance with w:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. —Gazoth (talk) 19:07, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Then how to do that. How to upload pics on Wikipedia. Not on commons. And I have read the free contents and others.. best license that i could find was {{GODL-India}} and {{Copyrighted free use}} but you removed both the files why ? It was within the lisence and the Compound image was clicked by me. I have it in my phone. Includents.h (talk) 19:17, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Gazothbot - possible bug report

Hey. I was looking at images in Category:Narendra Modi by year. I found some files had wrong dates in the "date" parameter in file description, due to which they were categorized in wrong month and year. In case you might want to look at them.

Will add more. —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 23:55, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

The date is usually extracted from the metadata (EXIF) in the photo. If such metadata is absent, then the script extracts the date from the caption. If the date on the camera was set incorrectly, then the extracted date will also be incorrect. In some cases where an older photo is recycled for a newer event, the extracted date will be accurate but the date in the description will not match. I can switch the priorities to try and extract it from the caption first, but some photos will end up having a wrong date in both cases. Additionally, the metadata also gives a time of capture, which is not possible to get from the caption. —Gazoth (talk) 00:11, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Let me know how common this problem is, if you can only find a handful of them then it's not worth the loss of time data. If the problem is widespread, then I'll switch the priorities when I start the bot up again (probably in a few months). —Gazoth (talk) 00:14, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

More files with the same issue:

Now what I am seeing in all the images' metadata, is that there are multiple date-time values. The "Date and time of data generation" is probably as per the camera settings (which may or may not be correct for every image), whereas the "File change date and time" is the actual date-time when the photo is taken (this one is correct in all the above cases). So, I would say that if you can find a way to set the date as per the date/time from the second value, that might fix this issue. —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 03:00, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

@Sarvatra: Thanks for finding that out. I'll look into fixing this. I probably need to move away from a simple priority and choose a time that agrees with the caption date, but that's a more elaborate fix. —Gazoth (talk) 03:54, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
@Sarvatra: After a second look, it indeed can't be a simple priority fix. I used to use the "File change date and time" as the first priority, but this is usually the date the image is edited before publishing. This date is much more unreliable in general, and so I switched to using "Date and time of data generation" as first priority, followed by "Date and time of digitizing", followed by "File change date and time" an finally extracting it from caption. —Gazoth (talk) 04:04, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
but this is usually the date the image is edited before publishing. Yes you're right about this. I understand that the priority order you're using is the best way. However, what we know is that the caption will always have the correct date. So one fix I would suggest, if possible, is to have a check if the caption-date is same as date in the three date/time metadata values. So first you take the "Date and time of data generation" value, check if its date is same as the date in caption, if yes then use it, else move on to checking "Date and time of digitizing" and repeat the same step, followed by "File change date and time" value. What do you say? —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 09:56, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Yes, as I mentioned before, that's probably a better choice, but also a more elaborate fix. —Gazoth (talk) 13:48, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Why no new uploads?

Hi. GazothBot stopped uploading images from PIB since November 2018. Why no new uploads are being carried out? Is there a technical issue? Those image uploads were superhelpful. So please start it soon again. Thank you. Regards,-Nizil Shah (talk) 17:04, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

@Nizil Shah: No, not exactly a technical issue. It originally broke because the PIB website changed something, but I didn't bother to fix it as there were about 40,000 uncategorised images. I cannot spend much time on categorisation and did not want to simply increase the burden. However, the number has now fallen to about 11,000 and I'm thinking of starting it up again after I fix some issues and automate the categorisation a bit more. I'll try to get it running soon, if some other IRL matters pop up it might take a month or so. —Gazoth (talk) 02:27, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

No GazothBot update since November 2018

Hello, GazothBot does no longer upload pictures from Press Information Bureau since November 2018. Maybe the website has changed and the bot does no longer work? vip (talk) 19:32, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Created https://gitlab.com/Gazoth/pib-upload/issues/1 vip (talk) 20:19, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
@Don-vip: I am aware of the issue. It'd be quite easy to fix the uploading issue, but the problem is categorization—a manual, time-consuming process. There is some uncertainty around the {{GODL-India}} license, see the template talk page for more details. As long as the uncertainty persists, I don't see the value in spending time on categorizing the uploaded images. As the uploader, I would be seen as responsible for categorization. Unless somebody volunteers to be responsible for categorizing the uploaded images, or the uncertainty around {{GODL-India}} clears up, I will not be restarting the bot. —Gazoth (talk) 03:40, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Jitendra Singh visiting an exhibition by Divyang foot artist Shri Uttam Bhardwaj, in New Delhi.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Jitendra Singh visiting an exhibition by Divyang foot artist Shri Uttam Bhardwaj, in New Delhi.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Source for the image

Could you put in the Summary the source of the version of this image you uploaded? Veverve (talk) 11:57, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
By the way, if you have uploaded images without giving the source, then please indicate the source. Veverve (talk) 11:59, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Dear Veverve, it appears that the press information bureau has changed their website layout. This is why the source url gives 404 error (the 'direct link' works though). You can also check the flickr source, where the image is available. I have updated the description of the image from metadata. —Sarvatra (talk) 10:13, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
