Theoretical_Search_Area_MH370.svg

[edit]

This is really very good, but I tried to translate this to English and there were 4 sections that could not be translated because they were not blocks of text.

I fixed this by hand, and uploaded the English and German versions, so I'm hoping you can incorporate the changes, so everyone can translate easily in the future.

Suggestions how to handle this are welcome.

Hallo CommonMarks, I have uploaded a new version: Theoretical Search Area MH370.en.svg. I think the png file is not necessary, the svg file should work well. A German version already exists (File:Theoretical Search Area MH370.svg, therefore Theoretical Search Area MH370.de.svg should be deleted. --Furfur (talk) 00:32, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for looking at this. What I was trying to say is some versions of this map will not translate using svgtranslate, so the edits I made fixed this. You can not see these changes visually, only with a text editor. This is relevant to allowing translations for the other language wikipedias however. I'm not sure which software you are using to make changes to the map but some times, the text is preserved and sometimes it is being lost. Your own .svg points to svgtranslate, have you looked at this before?

Compare this https://toolserver.org/~nikola/svgtranslate.php?svg=upload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F5%2F54%2FTheoretical_Search_Area_MH370.svg vs this https://toolserver.org/~nikola/svgtranslate.php?svg=upload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F7%2F73%2FTheoretical_Search_Area_MH370.de.svg CommonMarks (talk) 02:23, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In your translation Theoretical Search Area MH370.de.svg the inscription of the two arcs is not visible in the preview. When editing this with Adobe Illustrator it looks strange. Maybe it can be fixed with Inkscape ? I removed the svg translate remarks. --Furfur (talk) 11:15, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I see. You are correct, the preview generator is not rendering this method of arc text. I will see if I can fix it, it might not be fixable. CommonMarks (talk) 19:51, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I researched and found that librsvg has known bugs in rendering arc text, so the only way to do it so the wiki preview renderer works correctly, is the way your files have done before. (text can be rotated ok, but curved text via textPath is not supported) In other words, there's no way to have curved text and having it translatable, so there's no point in the files I was trying to create. Thanks for you help in trying though. CommonMarks (talk) 06:26, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
