{{Reply to @Erinthecute}} Hello, good afternoon! I have a question! Please, how have you managed to find the source about the map you've done for the Greenlandic elections electoral map? Where have you find it? Thank you! Cachopeta (talk) 19:08, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Attribution of work

[edit]

Hello, please use the correct licenses and attribution when you are using files which you are not the creator of. Recently you uploaded File:2019 Greek legislative election - Vote Strength.svg and File:2019 Greek legislative election - Detailed Results.svg and tagged them as your own work. That however is not true, because they are quite clearly derivatives of my own work (File:Electoral constituencies of Greece (2018).svg), which is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 and requires attribution. Please attribute the work of others when you use it. --Sarah fides (talk) 12:56, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creating maps

[edit]

Hi @Erinthecute: ! I wanted to ask you a question about the process of creating maps. I am a contributor to the politics pages of Spain and sometimes international politics. However, I am trying to create maps as well, but the websites I use do not give me the option to make maps with gradients by vote strength. That is why I would like to ask you with what program/web you make the maps and thus follow a common style. Thank you very much for your attention and your work. Greetings! Phalbertt (talk) 22:08, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Phalbertt: Thanks! I use Inkscape for all my maps, so I do everything manually. I usually try to find an existing vector templates with the divisions I need and try to modify them (such as the Greek election maps), but if that's not possible, I trace from raster maps (such as most of the Australian state election maps). I use this site to generate the colour palettes I use. I then go through the results, usually on a government website where they're archived, and colour each division appropriately. To keep a consistent style, I duplicate over certain elements from older projects to new ones (like the labels for vote strength maps, and the lists of parties on results maps) and modify them. Queensland State Election Maps

[edit]

Hi, I’m wondering if you’ll be working on any more maps for the Queensland state elections (ie 1995, 1992, 1989, etc) in the future?

P.S., I really appreciate the contributions you’ve made, a lot of our election pages are really lacking in information and correct representation. Thx :) --The2016 (talk) 04:11, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland's results by constituency map

[edit]

Hi. This map (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2020_Irish_general_election_-_Results.svg) should be updated to include Joan Collins's seat in Dublin South-Central (Independents 4 Change). Currently, it is marked with the same color as the independent politicians. I4C is its own political party. --70.63.129.181 05:19, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Love Your Maps

[edit]

Hello! I'm just now seeing all the election maps you have made recently, and I have to say I am VERY impressed with how well done all of them are. And you tackled so many European election so well! Im a HUGE FAN of the Japan 2017 map! This is one of the best ones I have ever seen!

Keep up the good work! - DrRandomFactor

  1. Thank you so much!! The Japanese election map is one of my best, it took a lot of time and effort. Erinthecute (talk) 13:13, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Erin!

As the main author of the parliament diagram tool, I sometimes feel a responsibility to clean up Category:Election apportionment diagrams, and I saw this file of yours there. Should it be kept? If so, can you please give it a better name and some more information? --Slashme (talk) 12:46, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Australian federal legislature

[edit]

G'day,

I saw your Australian federal legislature map and how accurate/different it is from every other legislature around the world on Wikipedia. It is one of very few I have seen and I am aware it was not edited using the parliament creator tool. I wanted to know what you used to create that map as I would like to make some myself, being a keen political Wikipedia editor.

Cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MarioBayo (talk • contribs) 20:56, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Unfortunately I didn't use any tool or anything, I made them in vector art software using the official seating plans (House, Senate) as templates. I'll also say they're not perfectly accurate - the House diagram is a stylised interpretation because the actual seating plan doesn't have a seat allocated for every member, and the plan itself isn't very conducive to an aesthetically pleasing or easy-to-read diagram (it would look like this). If you want to make more like this, it's probably best to find seating plans of the legislature in question and try your hand at it in a vector program. No simple way to make them, I'm afraid. Shapefiles for victorian 2018 state election map?

[edit]

Hey, I have been looking for the shapefiles for victorian legislative assembly electorates, i see you made the map for the 2018 vic state election(this), was just wondering where you found the shapefiles? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 124.188.168.169 (talk) 04:34, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't actually make the map you linked, IIRC I just modified that one when making the vote strength map. Erinthecute (talk) 04:37, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Vote strenght map!

[edit]

Hi Erin! im a really big fan of your work, for me, you are the best editor of Wikipedia, and i have a question for you, which tools you use to create vote strenght maps ? Thanks for your time, greetings from México! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2806:1016:F:1CBA:F827:E479:55E4:1764 (talk) 02:50, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!!! I make all my maps with Inkscape, a free vector image editing program. I usually find a map of the divisions I need, trace it, then fill them in with the fill tool and delete the borders, so there are gaps between them. I then find the results (usually from the official government source, if I can find it) and colour the divisions. Erinthecute (talk) 13:42, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pakistan Election map shapefiles

Hi Erinthecute, great work you are doing here looking at your library of works! Amazing stuff. Since you have made Pakistan's 2018 election map, I was wondering if you have the shapefiles for that election. Would be grateful if you can share. --RugPundit (talk) 20:40, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Slovak parliament diagram

[edit]

Hello, Erinthecute! I am from Slovakia and I sporadically contribute to articles about politics in the Slovak Wikipedia. Thank you for creating the new diagram, but I've noted two things:

  1. Direction – SD and Voice – SD are similar parties, but Direction is slightly more left-wing. For example, one marxist is even a vice-leader of this party. So, Direction should be in the leftmost position in the diagram and Voice should be second from the left.
  2. The party Voice officially still doesn't exist (its future members are still collecting signatures from Slovak citizens needed to found a party) and they have been non-Inscrits for a long time, so someone may want to use the previous version in some articles now, or in the future. So, I think it would be better to revert your new version and upload it as a new file with a different name.

Thank you for considering these two things. I am sorry for my English, I'm still learning. Have a nice day. :-) --MmichaelDr. (talk) 10:45, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Very good point, I wasn't sure about showing the parties of the non-inscrits. Having two different versions seems like the best choice. And your English is excellent! Erinthecute (talk) 01:01, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2021 Salvadoran legislative election

[edit]

Hello, El Salvador will hold its municipal and legislative elections very soon, I don't know if you can create a map for this article.

File:2019 Guatemalan legislative election - Results.svg I don't know if you can create one similar to this one but with data from El Salvador, I would appreciate it a lot, because almost no one takes importance on these articles. 2020 Guatemalan (talk) 03:40, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! Since the electoral districts are based on the administrative districts, it should be pretty easy to make a map. I've noticed that English articles about Latin American elections tend to have very little content, which is a shame. Erinthecute (talk) 10:55, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, for the map I thank you very much I do not know if you can add File:Cámara de Diputados de Bolivia elecciones 2020.svg For El Salvador a similar one this is for 2021, it is the last favor I ask of you I am trying to make a change in these articles but I cannot add maps and nobody pays attention to me when i ask for help for a map 2020 Guatemalan (talk) 14:57, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I quickly made one: File:2021 Salvadoran legislative election - composition chart.svg, as well as one for the 2018 election. Making custom legislature diagrams can be difficult because you usually need a seating plan, but fortunately there is a pretty alright one available on the Legislative Assembly site. If you want to make the hemicycle chart you can use this tool which is fast and easy, and has an option to upload to Wikimedia. Erinthecute (talk) 23:51, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, and where is the place to create the maps? 2020 Guatemalan (talk) 17:20, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think you can add a map with the municipalities of El Salvador for the 2021 elections, I think that is the last thing missing in the article? 2020 Guatemalan (talk) 00:21, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The 2020 Romanian parliamentary elections

[edit]

I would like to thank you for the maps you had provided for the 2016 and 2020 parliamentary elections of Romania. Do you think you could make a slight modification to the party list? There is an omission I had tried correcting myself, but, I don’t have the experience in Inkscape to do that. The bureau responsible for the elections had registered the Save Romania Union (USR) and the Freedom, Unity and Solidarirty Party (PLUS) as an alliance, calling it The USR-PLUS Alliance (Alianța USR-PLUS) on the ballot (or USR-PLUS, in a shortened form). Here are two documents, one from the alliance and the other from the bureau, admitting the electoral alliance. (Documents that can be checked here)

Too long; didn’t read: Naming the USR-PLUS Alliance only USR is a bit of an omission, considering it was named The USR-PLUS Alliance on the ballot and in the campaign. (Although the parties had almost merged, since they had approved a fusion protocol on the 15th of August 2020. Emphasis on the almost, since the court responsible for the parties had not had its say on the fate of the decision of the still existing political parties - USR and PLUS)

Do you think you could amend the legend of the map accordingly? Much obliged! - Victor P. (talk) 07:23, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Thank you for bringing this up! I copied the labels over from the 2016 map and forgot to change USR to USR-PLUS. The issue should be fixed now. Erinthecute (talk) 07:33, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bulgarian election maps

[edit]

Hello, I saw that you made the voter strength and result maps for the previous Bulgarian parliamentary elections. Would you happen to still have the templates available? I'd like to learn how to modify them through Inkscape - even if you do end up making the maps, I'd still love to learn, so that I can at least modify yours for the Bulgarian article :) Feel free to ping me on reply, as I tend to miss them otherwise --Yupyuphello (talk) 09:14, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Yupyuphello: Unfortunately I don't have any templates other than the files on Commons. If you download them they should be relatively easy to edit (make sure to unlock the layers of course) apart from the text. I convert all the text in my maps into paths before uploading so that they don't render weird when embedded. It's kinda tedious to change, since you have to manually replace the uneditable text with proper text. I have to do it to adapt or change my old maps sometimes. To do it, I make a new text box and write in the same text as the one I'm replacing, make sure it's the same font (Arial) and bold/italic if necessary, then use the object size in the top toolbar to make it the same dimensions as the one I'm replacing. Then I align the new text with the old one using the Align and Distribute interface (under Object in the top toolbar), and delete the old one. Then I change the words to whatever I need them to be, and repeat the process for all the text that needs changing. Other than that, it should be pretty easy to change the colours on the key and the map itself. I hope I explained decently and that this helps! Erinthecute (talk) 10:06, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, tried my hand at it and I seem to be struggling with the alignment itself. When you have the time, can you run me through that aspect as well as how you convert text into paths. Right now I've managed to change all of the seats to white, I'd like to replace the text with Bulgarian and then just turn the party boxes on the left black and with basic text which I can edit once the results are in :) --Yupyuphello (talk) 08:31, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greaet Parliamentary Maps!

[edit]

Hi there,

Just wanted to send a message here on your discussion page to say I really love how you made the compositions of the Australian House of Representatives. Craig Kelly just quit the Liberal Party and has gone to the crossbench. I was wondering if you were able to update it?

NB: How do you create these diagrams by the way? I usually use the generator made by User:Slashme.

APNOneTwo (talk) 01:07, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I've updated the chart. As for how I make them, I try to find a seating plan and arrange squares/circles in the physical position of each seat. This is how I made the Senate chart. The House of Reps chart was a bit more complicated because not every member had a seat allocated when I made it, so I took some liberties to make a diagram which is faithful to the arrangement of the chamber and easy to read. When making standard hemisphere charts, I use the parliament chart tool. Erinthecute (talk) 01:35, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
APNOneTwo, if you don't need a layout that's faithful to the actual layout of the room, there is always the Westminster tool, but certainly if you're willing to put in the effort like Erin is doing, you can get a great result by hand. I'm a fan of circular spots instead of rectangles, because I find that gives an easier to read diagram, but that's a personal preference. --Slashme (talk) 12:46, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Maps and legislature's

[edit]

How exactly do you make the electorates on a map in InkScape so precise and defined/high quality? I made one to what I thought looked decent (tracing over the electorates in InkScape), and it looked ok up close, especially when making it, but looked horrible from somewhat of a distance.

Also, how do you make the seating maps in vectr to appear high quality with a transparent backround?

Quality of Maps

[edit]

I would like some advice on how your Inkscape maps are so high quality, with a transparent backround? Thank you!

MarioBayo (Talk page)

@MarioBayo: @AlSmith28: (since you asked a similar question). As noted, I make my maps using Inkscape. I'm not very good at advice or tutorials to be honest, and I only started making maps for Wikipedia after a couple years of making more detailed fantasy-type maps. I learned using this tutorial, which will give a good idea of how to draw maps and use the program in general. I learned the clean and minimalistic style just by studying User:DrRandomFactor's maps, sometimes modifying them for use with newer elections, and otherwise trying to replicate them as best I could.
As for specific tips, one of the trickiest things with vector images is filling areas with solid colour. Vector programs have trouble telling where edges are, so when you use the fill bucket, it usually leaves gaps. The gaps tend to become more visible when you zoom out. MarioBayo, this is probably why your 1896 Queensland map doesn't look good from a distance. I also noticed that your fills are a bit of a patchwork with lots of separate, overlapping sections (which can work visually but is a nightmare to make or modify.) Remember you can combine paths into one object with Ctrl+K, or use Path -> Union to fully merge them (which connects the nodes).
Basically, I avoid the fill bucket as much as possible. Instead, I do something a little more complicated, but it's quicker and has a much neater result. I draw all the borders, making sure that the outline of the entire area is a single unbroken path. I then Combine (Ctrl+K) all the paths apart from that outline, then turn them into an object using Path -> Stroke to Path. I select the outline, use the Fill and Stroke interface to turn it into a path while turning off the stroke. Then I select both the borders and the outline and use Path -> Difference. If it went right, the borders should disappear while leaving the areas in between intact, basically cutting the filled outline into pieces. Then I just use Break Apart (Ctrl+Shift+K) to split it into separate objects and colour them using the Fill section of the Fill and Stroke interface.
Hopefully I explained that well enough and this will be helpful. Erinthecute (talk) 01:41, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible to have another update regarding this? Or answer some questions?

For example, you say "I draw all the borders, making sure that the outline of the entire area is a single unbroken path." Does that mean (using Germany as an example) you draw the outline of Germany first? "I then Combine (Ctrl+K) all the paths apart from that outline, then turn them into an object using Path -> Stroke to Path." This is very confusing. –MarioBayo (Talk page) 12:39, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bosnia 2018 elections

[edit]

Hi Erinthecute, love your maps! Spotted an error though: in your Bosnia elections (presidency - Croat member) maps you colored Mostar orange, indicating Komsic beat Covic there. But it was actually Covic who carried it (19.211 vs. 9.405). Hope you'll correct it! Thanks in advance.

Suggestion: Presidency votes in the Federation should perhaps be shown per municipality, but not as a share of total votes cast for all presidency members. For instance, in Travnik people vote either for Croat or for Bosniak presidency member. Among Croat candidates, Covic wins 4.516 out of (4.516+3.993+729+246+146) = 47,2%, but you display it as 19% because he won 19% of total votes cast for presidency member there... I am reaching out to you since I would like to understand how to create clickable graphics myself - as in clicking on different areas of the graphic link to different wiki pages. I see on your user page that you use Inkscape. I have never used this application, maybe I should... Does this app also allow the creation of a clickable heat map associated with the image? In my case, I am creating a composite image, a montage of clip art and other graphics and I want the ability to click on different elements and link to different wiki pages. Or, maybe this is only possible with SVG graphics? Would you be able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance. Enquire (talk) 03:52, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2021 Hungarian opposition primary

[edit]

Hello! There was an important opposition primary election in Hungary, which selected candidates against the ruling party Fidesz for the upcoming 2022 general election. Based on this map, could you make and upload an SVG map on results of the election? The map depicts the winners of the constituencies by parties (DK, Jobbik, LMP, Momentum, MSZP, Dialogue and ÚVNP). There is another map here, which contains the winning prime ministerial-candidates by constituencies. (Blue - Klára Dobrev, Turquoise - Péter Jakab, Yellow - Gergely Karácsony, Dark blue - Péter Márki-Zay). I would be very grateful for these maps. --Norden1990 (talk) 12:20, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gladly! I'll upload them in a second. Erinthecute (talk) 14:48, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thank you for your excellent and fast work. Unfortunately, there was a mistake in the original map at Telex.hu. Békés County 4th constituency (Orosháza) was won by Péter Jakab (1918 votes), instead of Klára Dobrev (1890 votes). Can you fix it? --Norden1990 (talk) 15:11, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Erinthecute, Re your 'Map of constituencies of the Dáil Éireann since 2017, coloured by number of seats elected' would it be possible to prodduce this map with the names in our language Irish Gaelic? I have posted the map on the Irish Gaelic version of Wikipedia at https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A1ilcheantair Ériugena (talk) 12:03, 9 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to. Hopefully this is correct, let me know if I got anything wrong. Erinthecute (talk) 04:26, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2021 Hungarian opposition primary (second round)

[edit]

Dear Erinthecute! The second round of the opposition primary is over, Péter Márki-Zay won the primary. Similarly to the former two maps, could you make a map showing the results of the second round by county? This time, the results were not displayed by constituency. You can use the country and Budapest maps at Telex.hu as sources. Thanks in advance, --Norden1990 (talk) 22:08, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Map Creating tool

[edit]

Hi Erinthecute, I see that you are really good at making election maps and you made recently few on Bulgarian elections. I was working on some election maps too and I think that you may be interested by a tool I try to create for statistical maps. I think that it can be used for election maps too. It is based on an svg template of a map that can be filled with colors or graphs. I think that the maps from Commons can be easily adapted to be used with the tool. I made an example with Bulgarian regions but other maps can be used too. If you are interested you can check it here. I will be glad if you give some feedback. Thanks--Ikonact (talk) 23:01, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Erinthecute, Here I adapted one of the Australian election maps from Commons to be used with the tool. I guess you are more familiar with Australian elections and this may be helpful. The map does not have the electoral divisions names yet and I use the svg path id to identify them. If you think that this may be helpful for creating election maps I will be glad to here from you. Regards. --Ikonact (talk) 16:29, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for not replying earlier. I messed around a bit with Bulgaria and Australia and it's intuitive and useful, just a little rough around the edges which is entirely fair. I think I understand everything, but is there a way to make multiple palettes to indicate strength for different parties? Erinthecute (talk) 23:45, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Erinthecute! The vote strength is on my to-do list. I am inetrested to learn if such a tool may be helpful or you would prefer to work with Inkscape ans similar software. I will do the vote strength soon. thanks --Ikonact (talk) 14:55, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I added the vote strength and made a tab to choose a map. I saw that you recently did the Nigeria elections so I adapted this map for a test. I can try to import other maps too. Here is the last version. I will be interested to learn your experience and if this can be useful. Thanks --Ikonact (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Federal Elections 2001-Present

[edit]

Hi Erin! I'm not sure how much free time you have around this time of the year but I would like to kindly ask something of you. Recently the outdated and fairly poorly made electoral maps for the 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010 Australian Federal Elections have been bugging me quite a bit and I've been mulling whether or not to redo them myself. Ultimately though I decided that I should leave a message on your talk page instead given my rather painful attempt at mapping the 1896 Queensland Colonial Election and my poor understanding of SVG files as a whole. All the maps necessary are available via the AEC website and simply need to be traced and aligned correctly in order to draw the boundaries accurately. If you do choose to take this endeavour up I'd like to wish you the very best of luck :)

I'm interested. I've thought about doing maps for previous elections before but was never quite sure what templates or setups to use. I'll definitely look into it. Erinthecute (talk) 04:18, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nigerian election maps

[edit]

Hi Erin, I've been following your maps and imaginary elections for years now and wanted to ask if you would consider making some Nigerian election maps. As one of the world's biggest democracies, it would be great for Nigerian election pages (on gubernatorial and Senate elections) to have maps for the first time. I know you likely have other projects but I'd quite appreciate if you could consider making some for Nigerian pages.

Suggestions: For the Senate election page, finding the district map could be difficult (I'm not sure if this base map will do) but the Senate results are on its page. For gubernatorial elections, it depends as the 2021 Anambra State gubernatorial election would be the easiest and most straightforward to map as I put LGA results on the Wiki page. Seven other gubernatorial elections also have results on news sites: 2020 Ondo (results), 2020 Edo (results), 2019 Bayelsa (results), 2019 Kogi (results), [2019 Yobe] (results), 2019 Cross River (results), and 2017 Anambra (results). You could also make other maps: ones for gubernatorial election overview pages (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) like the ones on United States gubernatorial elections results map.svg American pages and/or current situation maps for the House (current members), Senate (current members), or Governor's offices (current list). Thanks for your consideration!!1 Watercheetah99 (talk) 07:37, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Weimar maps

[edit]

Your work is truly amazing! These Weimar republic election maps looks wonderful, thanks a lot :) Besides, I have two questions for you:

1) is it possible to create another map based on Weimar census — about nationalities, if census had a questions like that?

2) do you plan to create some Russian election maps? 79.139.196.68 14:57, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Thank you!! Unfortunately the data I have access to doesn't contain anything about nationality or language. As for Russian elections, I don't have any particular interest, nor the sources or familiarity with Russian language sources to do a proper job of anything more detailed than what's already available. 1996 Berlin-Brandenburg Fusion referendum

[edit]

Hey, I noticed you do a lot of election maps, so I would like to ask you If you could maybe do one for the 1996 Berlin-Brandenburg Fusion referendum (Wiki: [Fusion of Berlin and Brandenburg ]). Unfortunately, I don't have a detailed source for the percentages, so if the table on this page (https://berlingeschichte.de/stadtentwicklung/texte/5_33_laefuver.htm) doesn't contain every district, maybe only having West Berlin, East Berlin and Brandenburg colour-separated would be enough.

Thank you. Maxwhollymoralground (talk) 13:04, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That would be very interesting to do, I'll look into it for sure. I'd want to do it by district if I can. Erinthecute (talk) 01:04, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

1986-1989 Queensland election maps

[edit]

Hi Erin! I've really wanted to make a map of the 1986 Queensland state election for a couple years now, given it was the only time in Australian history the Nationals were able to win a majority government in their own right, but I'm not particularly skilled with Inkscape, and so I was wondering if it might interest you at all? The source maps are not particularly great, especially compared to the ones out there for historic Victorian election maps, but I eventually came across the entire thing: here https://documents.parliament.qld.gov.au/tableoffice/tabledpapers/1990/4690T2017.pdf and here https://gisservices.information.qld.gov.au/arcgis/rest/directories/historicalscans/cad_scans/cad-map-queensland-state-map-q4n-lga-and-electoral-districts-1986.jpg

The most trouble you will run into if you do move forward with it is in the small provincial city electorates of Townsville, Mackay and Bundaberg, which don't have insets on any map I can find online.

Anyway, thank you for all the great maps you've made! The2016 (talk) 11:03, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Weimar election maps statistics questions

[edit]

Hello Erin, I love your election map work and find your Weimar election maps to be an amazing contribution to Wikipedia.

There were just some things I was wondering, since I delved into the election data myself. One thing I noticed is your maps sometimes include districts that were not formed yet at that point, such as Crimmitschau, Aue, Meerane, and various other small Stadtkreise in the 1920 map. Looking around further I realized you must have used the municipal (Gemeinde) data. However, some of the cities displayed did not exist as Stadtkreise at any point, such as Ludwigsburg, Dessau, Karlsruhe, and many others particularly in Hesse-Darmstadt, Baden, Württemberg and Anhalt. I applaud adding in that extra level of detail, but similarly I must assume you used the Gemeinde data. My source of confusion comes in the two Reichstag elections in 1932, where the Gemeinde level data is completely unavailable in all data sets I could find. You were still seemingly able to find data to fit those cities, so I am wondering if you managed to find an alternative source of data for the Gemeinde in those two elections, or if you found some other method?

My other question has to do with your 1919 election map. What source were you able to find listing results by imperial constituency? Despite extensive searching I could only find the ICPSR data which lists only by the big electoral constituencies.

Thanks, and great work once again! Hunter9502 (talk) 08:43, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! All my 1920-33 data was acquired from here: https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/ICPSR/studies/42
Unfortunately I don't know much about what's available from various other sources because I was very helpfully pointed to this dataset by someone else. Municipal data for a few cities is included in a few states, as you mentioned, though not for every election. It's denoted separately from Kreise and I had to manually subtract it from the Kreis each Geminde was part of. I think there's also some peculiarities with data being provided for cities that weren't Stadtkreise at the time but became one later, and so on. One thing that mystifies me is Nowawes, adjacent to Potsdam, which has data for precisely one election - December 1924 - and nothing else.
For the 1919 election I took the data from the book Wie wäre die Wahl zur Nationalversammlung 1919 unter Beibehaltung des absoluten Mehrheitswahlrechts ausgefallen? It has a neat table at the end showing the raw 1919 data by Imperial Reichstag constituency. Erinthecute (talk) 12:12, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response, I saw from the image descriptions that you used the ICPSR data, but I originally couldn't figure out how to get it in a readable format. I managed to find a tutorial though and got it to load into SPSS. My source I've been using has been the "Election and Social Data of the Districts and Municipalities of the German Empire from 1920 to 1933" (https://search.gesis.org/research_data/ZA8013) from GESIS. You might actually be interested in using it, because it fills some gaps in the ICPSR data. For example in the 1928 election map you omitted the Gemeinde because there is no data for that election in the ICPSR set, but that data is available in the GESIS set. You will need Stata or SPSS to load it, or I could export it in an Excel format or something if you don't have access to either of those.
I also looked into the mention of Nowawes, since I noticed the data set I used similarly has it only listed for the Dec. 1924 election. I managed to find an article titled "Minor and major flaws of a widely used data set: the ICPSR 'German Weimar Republik data 1919-1933' under scrutiny" (https://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/bitstream/handle/document/3537/ssoar-hsr-1981-no_20-falter_et_al-minor_and_major_flaws_of.pdf) and it mentions a number of errors in the ICPSR data set, including a specific mention that Nowawes was given an incorrect code for 3 (Kreis) instead of 4 (Gemeinde) for that one election, as it never actually existed as a Stadtkreis. I'm not sure if that might change the results for Kreis Teltow if you subtract Nowawes from it. It also goes over many errors that were made in punching in data that doesn't match up with the cited documents, and also describes many peculiarities with various Kreise and Gemeinde. I checked a few of these to see if the data set was updated to fix these errors, but it does not seem so. I wouldn't worry too much about changing your maps to account for this, but the document could probably still be useful I imagine.
Also I meant to ask before, where did you manage to find period accurate sources for the borders of the Kreise and Gemeinde, if you wouldn't mind? I tried to do some digging myself but couldn't find anything past 1900. Thanks. Hunter9502 (talk) 15:36, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm interested in that dataset. I don't know nything about Stata or SPSS unfortunately - I was given an Excel copy of the ICPSR set I used - so I would be very grateful if you wanted to provide that. The errors are a little troubling. I did subtract Nowawes from Teltow, but of course I couldn't account for any other errors that might be in there.
I got the boundaries from here: https://censusmosaic.demog.berkeley.edu/data/historical-gis-files Unfortunately this dataset has its fair share of errors too, especially with Stadtkreise. All the cities in the Düsseldorf Regierungsbezirk, for example, are badly wrong or not updated with the passing of years; there are similar issues with Stuttgart, Leipzig, Hanover, Munich, and likely others I can't recall or missed. I had to fix this manually for my maps. Erinthecute (talk) 12:25, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah no worries, I thankfully have university access to SPSS right now. I exported it to the Excel .xlsx format and uploaded to Google Drive, hopefully that works. The variables are usually pretty straightforward but some of the nuances in the SPSS descriptions are lost when exporting to Excel, so you'll have to look at the handbook .pdf to get the full idea, since for example some of the variables group together multiple parties. The "agglvl" variable uses 4 for Stadtkreise, 5 and 6 for Landkreise, 8 for Gemeinden with over 2,000 inhabitants, and 9 for Restkreise (which is a term made by the study to group together all the Gemeinden with less than 2,000 inhabitants in a Kreis). The only distinction between 5 and 6 is that 6 is for Kreise that don't have any Gemeinden with less than 2,000 people, and therefore have no Restkreise data, which is why if you are aggregating the data you'd choose either 4+5+6, or 4+6+8+9. For the purposes of your maps though you'd just need to subtract the Gemeinde from their Kreis.

Thank you so much! That's quite a lot of data, and to be honest I am tempted to map all of it, though I think that would be unwise (and very difficult, not least because I don't have the borders). I'll look into filling the gaps for my existing maps. Thanks again. Erinthecute (talk) 08:16, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Elecciones España

[edit]

Buenas tardes,

Podrías crear un gráfico de las elecciones autonómicas del 28 de Mayo en España y de las elecciones generales del 23 de Julio en España.

Muchas gracias. ACT2021 (talk) 15:55, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Erin! I support this; could you please make these maps (this and this) for the 2023 general election in Spain? Thanks! Impru20 (talk) 11:23, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request to use Color scheme

[edit]

Hello, I am planning on making a map of the results of the 1946 Italian constituent assembly election by commune, and I was wondering if I would be able to use your color scheme, primarily basing it off the color ramps you used for the Weimar Republic elections. You would be credited, of course. OregonMapGuy (talk) 01:50, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That would be perfectly fine, feel free. Erinthecute (talk) 03:45, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ukraine elections

[edit]

Hello again! Just wanted to ask — would you continue your work on Ukraine maps? Beside 2006-2007-2012-2014, which is wonderfully done, there is legislative elections in 1998, 2002, 2019, and presidential in 1999, 2004, 2010, 2014, 2019. All the data is availabale, looking forward to see these maps, if you are interested! 79.139.201.67 15:16, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Election maps

[edit]

Hey. I have a couple of questions. How can I make my own proper election maps to use them for wikipedia? For example, the one similiar to the one used in the 2022 French presidential election. Or like the one used in the 2010 Bosnian general election. Or even the on in the 2018 Bosnian general election, which you yourself made, both the presidential and legislative maps. How exactly are they made? Bakir123 (talk) 18:20, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2019 Slovak presidential election

[edit]

Could you switch the color palettes of Šefčovič and Čaputová. PS (Čaputová) used red back in the day but their logo always included some shade of Cyan while Smer (Šefčovič) never used it,

2023 Elections in Slovakia

[edit]

Good evening! I apologize for any English errors in the first place. I just wanted to ask whether you'll be making a map of the results, as you did with many of the past parliamentary elections in the country. Your last map from the 2020 elections is wonderful and it would be great to have one this year too. However, I also wanted to ask if it wouldn't be possible for you to only include the three parties that had a significant share of votes in different regions (those being Smer-SD, PS, and Alliance) so that other parties don't have to be included in the map to not make the list of parties tremendously long. On the other hand, where did you find such a clean map of Slovakia and how do you edit it in Inkscape? Thank You in advance and best regards! Edit: I've figured the way out with Inkscape. I added the regions and made the map in your style so it suits the maps for all the previous elections, with you being credited of course, hope that's alright. 2014 Brandenburg state election

[edit]

On the map you created for this election it says the AFD won 4 districts despite it‘s wrong. Can you please change that? Thanks 2A00:20:304C:B5C0:3893:F4CC:EE2F:F16D 05:22, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1974 Lower Saxony state election

[edit]

If the number of district won by the CDU and the SPD is combined it‘s 99 Districts, but on the map it are 100 Districts. Something isn‘t right and I don‘t know what it is. 37.24.254.52 20:58, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Same problem with 1978 37.24.254.52 21:01, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The constituencies were different in 1974-78 compared to 1982-98, but I'm not able to find those older boundaries or the results under them - but I do have results under the later 1982-98 boundaries, which I used instead. It's imprecise but better than nothing. Erinthecute (talk) 23:34, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2024 South Korean election

Hi there. Number 57 has added a map of the recent election, but it's not as detailed, nor as good, as your maps. If you have time, and once the results have been confirmed, could you create one, like you did for the 2020 election? ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 13:27, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Odd district in Posen-West Prussia in the second level Weimar elections

[edit]

I have seen a district north-east of Schneidemühl, east of Deutsch Krone and south-west of Flatow which I have been unable to find information about. This being in the Weimar Republic election maps. The district is located in Posen-West Prussia. Do you know what it is? Sandjaar (talk) 22:21, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

According to my GIS data it's an exclave of Netzekreis. Erinthecute (talk) 12:47, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From what I've seen the Netzekreis didn't have an exclave. Could it potentially be Schönfeld, which was given to Flatow from the defunct Kolmar in Posen district? The other two cities which remained in Germany did go to the Netzekreis, so maybe confusion arose while the map was made. If it's not too much of an issue, could it be fixed? In total the mistake seems to be in 19 maps, so if it's too much to do that's understandable. Sandjaar (talk) 09:43, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

South Australian election maps

[edit]

Hi Erinǃ I've come up across some state electorate maps for South Australia which are either not featured on wikipedia/wikimedia or are of poor/outdated quality and am wondering if you may be interested in them? They're not in ideal formats unfortunately.

The following boundaries were used for the 2006 state electionː https://edbc.sa.gov.au/redistributions/2003/electoral-district-maps.html

And this svg file contains the map used for the state elections of 1956, 59, 62, 65 and 68ː https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Playmander_Map.svg

Apologies if I'm a bit of a bother as I have asked of you regarding past election maps previously, however yours are very well made and I'm unable to imitate that same style myself. The2016 (talk) 06:35, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Erin, thank you for this map, but could you change the colour for the Freie Wähler to orange? In my opinion the blue colour scheme is too close to that for the AfD. --Einsamer Schütze (talk) 20:17, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
