Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:56, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading File:Wikimedia browser share pie chart.png!
Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

Ordinate scale on Mobile phone subscribers
Do you think we could limit the scale of the ordinate axis on Mobile phone subscribers per 100 inhabitants 1997-2007 ITU.png to 100? While I realize one person can own multiple mobile phones, I doubt the average number of active mobile phones per 100 people will ever top 100. —voidxor (talk | contrib) 05:14, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Copyright violations
Hello EmmaCoop.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

Panama Papers
@JCRules: first of all, I want to say thanks for making the thing in the first place. Lord knows what else we would do for a top-level graphic, and I for one don't want to mess around figuring out where Moldava is on the map. I do have some comments though...
Someone changed the display to a higher resolution, I suppose because they wanted it wider, and the little grey specks were bothering me since I sasumed they were yanno, jpeg artifact or something. I had GIMP open and was going to fix that when I realized that you have countries on there where I am not aware of politicians being mentioned.AFAIK there aren't that many small islands implicated, but I figured maybe I should ask before investing time in a rather boring task. In case one of them is Moldava, yanno :) Just kidding; I am pretty sure it's in the Balkans somewhere.
But so anyway, Moldava? Also did not know about Ireland...or Sweden, where all I have is an investigation into a bunch of norwegian bankers -- or Korea north or south. And Israel? I have some businessmen there.... if you could give me a shout and give me a clue that would be great. You don't have to send links unless you have them handy, but something like "mayor of Dublin" or whatever would tell me where to look.
Also, I *am* requesting one change however. The article did say Bangladesh, but however, cough, we have removed it for now. One of the other editors figured out that the list of Bangladeshis the one newspaper published was for Swissleaks not Panama Papers. Oops. I looked around as well after be told me that and ya, as far as I can tell there are no people from Bangladesh in this leak at the moment politicians or not. That may change with the next dump of course, and I dunno how big a deal it is for you to edit this image. I suppose Bangladesh will survive if you can't get to it before the 9th.
Cheers and thanks for the help Elinruby (talk) 13:23, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Elinruby
- While I do know where many countries are on the map, I sometimes go to nations' articles on Wikipedia to see the map and get a generalization of where these countries are. I got many of these countries from the list that the ICIJ provided and in this list here. If you are using a Windows computer, use "Ctrl" and "F" and type in countries you are looking for. As for Bangladesh, it has been removed. JC · Talk · Contributions 20:40, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Before cropping
Hi EmmaCoop/Archive 1, I just reviewed one of your recent uploads. It choked the regular review bot because it was a crop of a larger image. Next time, I recommend importing the full sized image, letting the bot verify its license, and then using the toollabs:croptool to create a derivative image. You can add the tool as a gadget at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets, so it'll show up in your sidebar. Thanks for your contributions, czar 16:29, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

I'm the user whose update to the ballot access map 1 you further updated this morning. To prevent needing to modify code on any future update I may make, may I ask how you generated the map? Cropping File:Mindy Finn at CAP.jpg
Hi - thanks for uploading File:Mindy Finn at CAP.jpg. I took the liberty of cropping it to remove half of an unidentified person on one side and empty space on the other. As I thought this left in all the useful elements of the photograph, I chose to overwrite rather than upload as a separate cropped image. (Unlike the existing File:Mindy Finn at CAP (cropped).jpg which only kept in her head, and left out her upper body, table, name tag, and other potentially useful elements of the composition). Hope you agree, if not, I'd be OK with reverting. --GRuban (talk) 17:40, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

Source for your map of European XFEL countries
Many thanks for making File:European XFEL countries.svg. Did you have a source for the list of countries you shaded as being involved in the project? I have posted about this at w:Talk:European X-ray free-electron laser#Participating countries because the same list is given in the English Wikipedia article, but it is not clear that it matches the source cited there. Ireland and transgender soldiers
Hi,
First off, thank you for creating the map for the transgender military service page, it's very helpful.
I just wanted to point out what appears to have been an oversight: Ireland is listed as not accepting transgender soldiers despite policy to the contrary. Source: Varadkar says transgender people will never be banned from serving in Irish Defence Forces
If ever you update the map yourself, could you please make the most of it to include that? Thanks.

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons members.svg
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons members.svg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- I wrote to that file's author but has not responded yet. If it is not uploaded for a considerable time, can you update it or alert the user? The airspace bans and sanctions don't look like short term endeavors measured in months, but more likely, might last for years, considering the sanctions involving Crimea since 2014. 31.200.9.122 18:16, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

I wrote to the original uploader, just as you recommended weeks ago, but has been inactive for weeks now. Can you update this map by including Kosovo? The war might last for many months or even for years, and the air blockades and sanctions will only be lifted by the West according to their conditions, if the war ends and Russian troops leave Ukraine. Less severe sanctions, that are still binding, were already imposed back in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea. Thus, none of these sanctions are short-term actions.

File tagging File:Republicanos logo.svg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Republicanos logo.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Republicanos logo.svg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
