The Structured Data Bee, vol. 1, issue 1
Greetings, thank you for signing up for the Structured Data newsletter and its first edition. With this newsletter, the Structured data team plans on keeping you informed of technical progress, events, and communications to talk about the project, and continued information on how you can participate. This newsletter will be sent approximately every two weeks, and future editions will be translatable prior to publication. If you're new to Wikidata and want more information about how it works in relation to Wikimedia Commons, you can read an introduction to Wikidata for Commons being drafted.
Tech and design
- The software development for this process is still in the planning phases. The idea is to have some functional prototyping done for experimentation and feedback by the end of the year.
- The initial roadmap for development has been posted on Commons. The roadmap is a rough outline and is open to iterations as the team learns where and when to focus its energies.
- There is a page set up for design ideas about what structured data could potentially look like.
- There are forthcoming requests for comment about the particulars of technical architecture on mediawiki.org. Keep an eye on the Commons:Structured data/Get involved page for notification of when the RfCs are posted.
Events and chats
- There was a week-long meeting between the Wikimedia Foundation's Multimedia team, the Wikidata team, and community members, held in Berlin, Germany, at the office of Wikimedia Deutchland on October 6-10. You can read an overview of the event in on this page on Commons. There are also plenty of pictures available on Wikimedia Commons.
- If you would like to read more detail about what was discussed, there are etherpads of notes taken for each day of the event.
- The next IRC office hour to discuss the structured data project will be held on November 20, from 19:30 to 20:30 UTC.
Getting involved
- Sign up for this newsletter!
- While working prototypes are being developed, there is a drive to make all files contain machine-readable data on Wikimedia projects.
- The information and sign-up page is located on Meta, at File metadata cleanup drive.
- The MrMetadata tool on labs that will identify files on your wiki(s) that need information templates added.
- A hub has been launched to facilitate communication and documentation for this work.
- There is a frequently-asked questions page that is finishing drafting and will need translated. Keep an eye out for when it is ready if you are interested in translating.
- There will be active organization of the Get involved page as community participation is further organized. There will be work groups, similar to specific Wikiprojects, dedicated to particular aspects of structured data like licensing presentation, design, API performance, and even helping out with this newsletter and other community communications.
There will be much more information and activities around the proposal to develop structured data on Wikimedia Commons. This project is a major undertaking and an important step as the chief provider, repository, and curator of media for Wikimedia projects.
Thank you for your participation in such an extensive project, let me know if you're interested in participating in this newsletter. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:43, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes
- The "Special:Cite" page is now called "Special:CiteThisPage". That way, you know it's to cite the page, not to add a reference. [26]
- You can no longer use the
insource:
keyword for text searches. It caused issues with the new search tool. It will come back later. [27] [28]
Problems
- There was a bug in VisualEditor with Internet Explorer. It hid tools like the link editor when you opened them. The bug was fixed on Monday. [29]
- Issues with the new search tool caused geo data code to show up on pages on Monday and Friday. The mobile "nearby" tool was also broken. The problem is now fixed. [30] [31] [32]
- HHVM caused server issues on Thursday. They are now fixed.
Software changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf5) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 29. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 4, and on all Wikipedias from November 5 (calendar).
- Some wikis have icons at the top of a page to show if it is protected or featured. Icons show up using CSS. You can now use the
<indicator>
tag in these templates instead to add the icons. [33] [34] - VisualEditor now tells you if you're editing a re-used reference. This helps you avoid changing it if you just want to add a new one. [35]
- The icons in VisualEditor's template editor tool for adding more fields are back, along with other fixes. [36] [37] [38] [39] [40]
- After November 6, all wikis will have the tool to edit TemplateData. [41] [42] [43]
Future changes
- The new search tool will come to the last wikis in the coming weeks. This includes Wikipedia in French, Chinese, German and English. [44]

Richtung

File:Karl_W_Richter.jpg follow-up, request for review
Hi. We had a discussion about this file, or better said, you quite patiently responded to my whiney bleating with some suggestions. I tried to implement them as you suggested. Would you do me the favor of reviewing the form in which I added material to the template to ensure I didn't break format? I'd appreciate that. Thanks. Azx2 07:38, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Azx2, format-wise that's fine, I've just made the links a bit prettier. Copyright-wise, we still don't have 100% proof that this is an USAF-picture, but I guess I wouldn't nominate it for deletion if I came across this by chance. But then again (as previously mentioned), if I had uploaded this, I'd nominate it for deletion myself just to get further opinions from others. I'll leave that up to you … --El Grafo (talk) 10:11, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
Change of scope
Hi, just realised I forgot to notify you. Considering your comment, I changed the scope of this VI nomitation. Feel free to give your opinion about this new scope. Yours sincerely, Gyrostat (talk) 11:30, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Done Thanks for the reminder! --El Grafo (talk) 14:41, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
sharpening
Thanks for the info. I read a bit about it from the links and agree the chaining sounds like a stupid idea. The testing feedback also sounds suspect. If you play music at people who are not experts they will pick the system that sounds loudest and brightest, even if such is fatiguing and full of distortion. So I suspect oversharpening may superficially make some pictures look crisp but unnaturally so. Turning off all sharpening is also a bad idea as people will complain their thumbnails are soft. It looks like they have reverted the chaining change. -- Colin (talk) 16:05, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Colin, I'm sorry that I obviously was a bit unclear at first. I wanted to keep it short to avoid cluttering the nomination page – seems like that backfired quite a bit ;-) On first sight, I found the chaining a quite clever idea to decrease server load, can't blame them for giving it a try. I think the revert is not live on Commons yet [85], I guess it will happen with the next regular update. Cheers, --El Grafo (talk) 16:23, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Scallop diagram vote?
Hi, I noticed your comment on my nomination of my scallop diagram for featured picture (Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Scallop Diagram2.svg). Please see my follow-up comment regarding image's new status as having passed validation, and consider changing your vote to a "Support"— today is the image's last day for consideration, and if you and one other voter switch your votes, the image will pass. Otherwise it seems likely to fail. I worked very hard on it, and I have gone back and addressed your concerns— I hope you will think about changing your vote before the clock runs out. Thank you! _KDS4444 (talk) 10:41, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Siegerlandflughafen has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
