First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks :)

Thanks for the link fix - I saw the orange bar and freaked out for a sec (my css on WP makes my message bar white ;) ) riana_dzasta 16:05, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Haha, yeah, I'm still getting used to the differences between Wikipedia and Commons... the most obvious one being the mop. ;) EVula // talk // 16:09, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
And they get to use these! Fun fun fun! :) riana_dzasta 16:12, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
As if I didn't already want to be a Commons admin... EVula // talk // 16:21, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Page layout

I took the table layout from the main page of Wikipedia so it's all good. ;) --BigDT 01:40, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Just to spare you some time in unnecessarily removing the watermark in images from this family, be aware that User:PalaeoMal already did the work but, unfortunately, saved the cleaned-up images under another name. Sorry, I should have tagged the watermarked images as duplicates instead of updating the "other_versions" field. — Xavier, 11:25, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't understand why they were uploaded to new names; from what I understand, that should be done in cases of more extreme watermark removal (such as cropping a significant portion of an image). These are just URLs that are touched out in about ten seconds, meaning it's extremely easy and doesn't impact image quality at all.
The verbiage at Category:Images with watermarks even says "If a non-watermarked version of the image is available, please upload it under the same file name, and then remove this template" and "If the removal of the watermark has consequences for image quality (for example, a large portion of the image has had to be cropped away to get rid of the mark) [...] please upload the new version under a slightly different title so that both can be used". Just a little confused why we need both, especially when policy says to avoid watermarks. EVula // talk // 14:28, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Don't be confused, you are perfectly right: User:PalaeoMal should have uploaded the de-watermarked images under the same name, as you did. Sadly, you and User:Lycaon have done a lot of duplicate work removing those watermarks. — Xavier, 14:44, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Haha, alright; I'm always happy to find out that I'm not confused. And, on the bright side, those were insanely easy watermarks to remove, so it's not like I spent hours on something that didn't need to be done. :) EVula // talk // 14:52, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning Image:Buttocks.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:50, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Is this in response to anything in particular? EVula // talk // 23:07, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, lack of categorization for the following images:
ref: your gallery.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 23:43, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Alrighty. Thing is, none of those images are mine; I either cleaned up the images or removed watermarks (or recreated it in the case of Image:Barnstar-RTFM.png).
The best I can do is say that I'll try to categorize images as I clean them up, but I make no promises. :) EVula // talk // 00:23, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
All of the images you mentioned now have categories. Again, I'll try to remember to add them to images as I work on them, but I make no promises; if I'm trying to take a chunk out of an image backlog, I'll be more concerned with actual image work than categorizing. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

EVula/Archive-2007, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net.

Congrats, I see you've already grabbed a mop!  :)   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 16:57, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, nothing too bold, just some light cleaning. I'm going to be busy for about a month due to Real World committments, but I fully plan on busting out my EVula-brand Backlog Obliteration methods sometime soon. :) EVula // talk // // 17:02, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Smartness of CommonsDelinker

CommonsDelinker is not smart by itself, it gets commands from administrators on User:CommonsDelinker/commands. In this case Siebrand issued the replace command, so you should ask him. -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:11, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Will do, thanks for the response. EVula // talk // // 20:16, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Delete my Image please

Heya, could you delete MW.jpg? I've decided to keep myself anon. Thanks Razorflame 01:37, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Image:MW.jpg deleted. EVula // talk // // 01:43, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. It's a scary thought to have your own image on Wikipedia. Just got a little scared :). It takes a lot of guts to have your own image posted onto Commons :). Did I follow the correct procedure for photo uploading, by the way? Razorflame 01:47, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, everything looked to be in order. I actually just uploaded a picture of myself yesterday... though there are tons of pics of me floating around the internet, so I'm a bit used to it. :) EVula // talk // // 01:55, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
