Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:45, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

File:CFL Jersey MTL 2009.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. File tagging File:CFL MTL Jersey.png
[edit]This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:CFL MTL Jersey.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

- This above also applies to File:U Sports Football Horizontal Logo.png and File:U Sports Hockey Horizontal Logo.png. Can you provide a link to where is specifically says that each of these files has been released under a "cc-by-sa-2.5" license? There's nothing I can find on the "Brand Resources" page you're giving as the source for the files which says so. If you can, just clarify that on each file's page or add an additional link showing the license to make it easy to verify. Otherwise, these are unlikely to be kept as licensed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:31, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Marchjuly, I wasn't sure which licence to use, since I didn't see "logo" as an option. Should I be switching the licence to that? Because you're right, I don't think that's the correct one. Cmm3 (talk) 04:21, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- "Logo" is probably not an option because most logos tend to be protected by copyright and Commons does not accept COM:FAIR files. Assuming that you just found these online, downloaded them and then uploaded them to Commons, the permission of the copyright holder is going to be needed for Commons to accept the files under a free license per COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder. It's possible that these might be considered too simple for copyright protection per COM:TOO#Canada and be considered PD-logo, but you might want to ask for other opinions at COM:VP/C just to make sure. If PD is not an option and you cannot obtain permission to release the files as such, they will be deleted in about a week. If that happens, you probably can re-upload them locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content; this, however, means you will need to make sure that each use of the files satisfies Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:56, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hey thanks for the detailed explanation. I didn't realize there was that kind of difference with Commons. Since I know logos are accepted on wikipedia, I'll just wait for these to be deleted and then re-upload them there. Thanks! Cmm3 (talk) 17:49, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

About revision 356811171 of File:32, James Wilder Jr, Aug 18, 2018.jpg
[edit]Hi Cmm3. I removed the category Category:Toronto Argonauts players from File:32, James Wilder Jr, Aug 18, 2018.jpg because I created the category Category:James Wilder Jr. in order to contain all the images of this player (since at the moment there are 5 images of this person on Commons); so I have added Category:James Wilder Jr. to the image of which we are talking about and Category:Toronto Argonauts players to Category:James Wilder Jr.. In my opinion it seems a correct way to categorize since we don't have 2 times the same item in a category (at the moment in Category:Toronto Argonauts players we have both the image File:32, James Wilder Jr, Aug 18, 2018.jpg and the category Category:James Wilder Jr. and this it is not correct, I think). Maybe you didn't notice but I made the same thing with File:32, James Wilder Jr, June 22, 2019.jpg (but in this case you don't have changed my change). ––Civitas13 (talk) 09:54, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hey @Civitas13: , that's fair. I didn't see the subcategory within the Argonauts' page. No further argument from me. Cmm3 (talk) 14:26, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, since all has been clarified I will remove the redundant category. Regards :-) --Civitas13 (talk) 17:26, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
