Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:17, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

How do I delete a page?
[edit]I Need to delete this page - I opened a Category with the same name and it is now redundant. How do I delete a page? Chenspec (talk) 04:51, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
- Only Administrators can delete pages. Since you are a relatively new user, every new page you create is reviewed by someone doing New Page Patrol. Therefore you can just leave it and one of us will delete it, as I did. You can also add a Speedy tag to it to request a routine deletion. Finally we have "Nominate for Deletion" in the left hand column of every page, but that is reserved for pages that require discussion before deletion.
- By the way -- it is a very common mistake -- I myself have made it many times. If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:09, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks - I am new to the site, I am more active in the Hebrew Wikipedia... I started to categorize images for Wiki Loves Monuments. This is a fantastic competition and I think it is also very important! By the way, I'm looking for a more efficient way to categorize images. i use cat-a-lot, But you can use it only from categories and not from my uploads page Chenspec (talk) 12:43, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
Neukoln (talk) 07:57, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
Chenspec (talk) 05:58, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

21st Century Skills has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Hi, Chenspec, just by curiousity, why do you keep a Category:Temporary categories for User:Chenspec Cat-a-lot - Female humans ? Lotje (talk) 12:26, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- The main reason is convenience. It is designed to help me collect images that I want to categorize, without overloading the existing categories (I really try not to keep more than 200 images in category). It's much more efficient to work with the cataloging tool Cat-a-lot in this way. I chose this topic "Female humans" for now, but later on I plan to do similar categories other issues that interest me. What bothers me is that a lot of good pictures are lost Wikimedia Commons, because nobody knows they are there .... This is my way to promote the accessibility of images. So occasionally I change them - remove images that are in enough categories, or those that I can not find an appropriate category for them. And of course I add new photos when I find them. Now for example, I have too many pictures, it is hard to work with it. So soon I will filter some of them. Hope I answered your question and I'd love to hear what you think Chenspec (talk) 13:29, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you Chenspec. I feel like you,... a lot of good pictures, nobody knows they are there. I would be most happy to take a look now and then at your category and see if I can find a suitable page to add the nice ones. Lotje (talk) 15:16, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Category capitalisation
[edit]Hi Chenspec. When creating categories, please be mindful of capitalisation. I've moved "Female Shirts" to "Female shirts" and "Female Undershirts" to "Female undershirts". Words that are not proper nouns should not be capitalised. — Huntster (t @ c) 21:18, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the correction. I will remember it in the future Chenspec (talk) 04:39, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
I've seen that one of your new creations is the Category:Female undershirts. The name seems a little strange to me. There may be women's undershirts, but shirts are not female or male. The other thing that disturbs me more ist that you categorized a lot of (my) pictures there, that do not show underwear but sports clothing, and one of a woman in a black dress/gown (that one i corrected, the others are too much for me to change them all). --Tsui (talk) 18:06, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- Agreed. I particularly don't understand images like File:Stav Shaffir.JPG and File:Toray PPO 2009 Li Na.jpg (amongst others) being included. — Huntster (t @ c) 21:07, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- Tsui, Huntster - Sorry, probably a language problem. The intention was sleeveless shirts (from the pictures that were there before, I thought it was the intention). It's the same word in Hebrew - how it works in English? Chenspec (talk) 21:17, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
Cat-a-lot

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Chenspec,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
Telephone baby
[edit]Hi, you keep moving File:The telephone baby cph.3b17965.jpg into categories for females, when there is no indication that this is actually a girl. In early 20th-century US, children of both sexes were dressed in the same clothes, so it's possible that this may be a boy. For example, see US President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a young child. —howcheng {chat} 16:14, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

Staring
[edit][4]: seems odd to put this in Category:Staring. She just happens to be looking toward the camera while speaking. I don't particularly remember her doing anything like staring (which implies a sustained, open-eyed look in a particular direction). Also, adding possibly derogatory categories to photos of identifiable people seems to me like a very bad idea. Category name in romanized Hebrew
[edit]Shalom lach, Chen. Just as I prefer using English on Talk pages in the Commons - which as you probably know is the lingua franca here for all but file names - I'm not comfortable with a category name in romanized Hebrew with no accompanying explanation. The case in point:
- Category:Halebeniyot, created 5 October 2013 by User:Chenspec
- At present: 1 subcategory (17 files), 92 files
vs.
- Category:Cooling towers of Haifa oil refineries, created 23 September 2017 by User:Zaccarias
- At present: 71 files
So prior to taking any action, I'd appreciate your input on how to proceed reconciling this duplication of categories (manual merge? ugh...). Meanwhile, I've adding my own gloss of Halebeniyot to the category page for optimal clarity. -- Cheers from the Western Galilee, Deborahjay (talk) 14:11, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking. Both categories seem to relate to the same thing. One of them mentions the role of the buildings and the other indicates their name according to the local residents. Because it is the name, it can not be translated. Just transcribe. I recommend combining the categories and the names. What do you think about this? "Halebeniyot - Cooling towers of Haifa oil refineries" or "Cooling towers of Haifa oil refineries (Halebeniyot)". Chenspec (talk) 14:29, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'm fine with your arguments. I suggest to use the name Category:Halebeniyot (cooling towers of Haifa oil refineries). In my opinion this name would fit the naming scheme on Commons. The commonly used name should also stand first, as it does in this suggestion. When you agree I could perform the merge. --Zaccarias (talk) 15:13, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- I think that the category name should be Category:Lebeniyot. See Name. Haifa Oil Refinery Cooling Towers. Alternative Name. Arubot Batei HaZikuk, Lebeniyot. Construction Type cooling tower.... -- Geagea (talk) 15:30, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'm fine with both of them. However, there is an advantage in adding the explanation for people who do not speak Hebrew. Chenspec (talk) 17:55, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- By the way, the prefix HA corresponds to the word THE in English (that is, it is not part of the name, but it shows uniqueness). Chenspec (talk) 17:58, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- So we use Category:Halebeniyot (cooling towers of Haifa oil refineries) the name including the HA prefix, right? Please confirm. --Zaccarias (talk) 18:13, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- YES Chenspec (talk) 18:38, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- Done. --Zaccarias (talk) 19:03, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

There is no Halebeniyot in google serch but you can find Lebeniyot. I think it is better without "Ha" prefix. -- Geagea (talk) 19:09, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- Both searches on Google and Bing provide only very few results. Lebeniyot shows just one relevant image but no "normal" webpage results. Halebeniyot at least gives some results on he.wikipedia. I think this way or the other: It's not a big difference both would be okay. --Zaccarias (talk) 19:19, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- All the results including in he.wiki comes from Commons. -- Geagea (talk) 19:27, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- Also I think Category:Lebeniyot is good enough. Easier for serch and no duplicats. Explnation from Wikidata or in the top of the category, will set it all. -- Geagea (talk) 19:29, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'm okay with Lebeniyot but not yet convinced to solely use this name for the category title. However I don't want to be the one who has to decide this. You surely know better in this case. Instead of re-moving the category right away I'd like to wait a little to make sure that we have an agreement. --Zaccarias (talk) 19:43, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what's better. I posted the link to this discussion in the Hebrew Wikipedia to hear more opinions Chenspec (talk) 05:51, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

QI
[edit]Hello! Quality images are very interesting. You can learn a lot. Welcome! Please read the guidelines at Commons:Quality images candidates. Thank you. --XRay talk 17:06, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- OK thanks Chenspec (talk) 06:16, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- BTW: If an image is already promoted, it is not necessary to promote it again. It's useful to review unreviewed photographs first. (Sometimes there are two promotion votes within minutes. It's an error of the review helper. The does not check for an existing promotion.) Thank you. --XRay talk 11:54, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oh, I thought that the more people promote a picture the more quality it shows. If one is enough, then it is better to go first for what has not yet received reviews. Chenspec (talk) 12:24, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- That's FPC. If you like, please have a look to the Featured Pictures candidates. (Forgotten: You need more than one review for the consensual reviews (discussion) of QIC too.) --XRay talk 05:41, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Location?
[edit]Hi Chenspec - I removed the geotag from File:תל אביב Tel Aviv-Yafo (28).JPG as it was clearly erroneous (it mapped in Tokyo, Japan!!). If you can re-add the correct location, please do :-) Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:22, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how to add a location, but if you want the photo was taken in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel Chenspec (talk) 09:00, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! The easiest way to get the exact location is to zoom in on the location in google earth, use the location tag tool, and copt the latitude and longitude from that. Then add these to the file with this format: 1.111 (where 1.111 is the decimal degrees north latitude, and 2.222 is the decimal degrees east latitude). As an example, the centre of Ha-Medina Square in Tel Aviv is
