First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

Rail Icons

[edit]

Hi. I see we are both creating missing rail icons! One thing though; You just uploaded a "dSTR" which so far as I can tell is the wrong coding for that symbol. Could you let me know how you cam by that code? You might like to see w:en:User:AlisonW/Rail_Icons by the way. --AlisonW 22:54, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The "d" is a prefix of the parallel lines feature. This icons were originally created for the german WP, "d" meaning dünn = thin, it is used as the prefix of all 250px width icons (half-icons), which are used to create parallel lines pictures. The "d" is also used as a prefix for some full width icons, what I think is not correct. BjørnN 11:36, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is that latter point which is the problem I think. d for dünn is fine, but that means that the full-width icons currently coded 'd' need to be changed to something else to match full-width parallel. Some should be 'v' but others are more difficult. This might be difficult though to find all the current uses. --AlisonW 15:26, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible to find the current use by utilizing the [check usage] tab. I tested a couple of icons in this manner, fr:WP seems to be using them quite frequently, dÜST for example is used 15 times by fr:WP and once by de:WP. However, in fr: the icons are not directly used in the articles - they are 'hidden' inside french mnemonic templates. This means that it would be sufficient to amend just this template if the icon coding is changed. BjørnN 19:07, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Missing?

[edit]

Hello! I was editing pt:Ramal_da_Figueira_da_Foz and noticed you lack here of icons of the type (row) *ABZfg, which I had to create for that diagram. Is it an overlook or intentional? Tuvalkin (talk) 21:28, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tuvalkin, I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you're telling me. Sorry, BjørnN (talk) 16:05, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

blokkering

[edit]

hei

File:Stetinden.jpg - No vandalism intended

[edit]

Hi BjørnN! thanks for your attention. I tried to change the date because the description said 03. November 2009 which obviously couldn't be true. By checking the history I found out that the uploader meant 2009-03-11 instead of 2009-11-03 so I changed it to the correct format. Unfortunately it seems that I wasn't aware that I edited a previous edit. So the description disappeared, but that wasn't intended. Kind regards. --Rupert Pupkin (talk) 10:25, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license

[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

Overcategorization

[edit]

Hello BjørnN, could you please stop this "over"-categorization of BSicons?!? I spend a lot of time to have all those icons categorized, if you have suggestions, you should tell them first! axpdeHello! 12:29, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The reason is keeping track of the basic shapes. Keeping an own category for those as a repository might help avoiding innumerous variants of the same shape. I added the STR icons for completeness only, they are not really needed there as this are the icons that are known by "everybody". It's no problem for me if they are decategorized. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 13:12, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's what galleries are good for! I strongly support galleries as a repository just as you suggested! The big problem with the existing galleries: Most are long time out of date or part of automated lists of everything. We need some pretty good description pages instead of icons shown up in half a dozen different categories ... axpdeHello! 13:24, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: I hope you like the (temp.) name of those danish commuter train icons, I didn't like the "... legende" stuff as well, but we need a consistent naming for all those icons! axpdeHello! 13:26, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a good idea using galleries, I'm sorry that I didn't get the idea myself. Now about the icons with "funny" names: dMASK250 is used in the overlay technique to prevent the underlying icon from shining through the overlay icon. Here is an example:
||uvTUNNELa|d|dSTR|vSTR - the bottom icon bar
||dMASK250|dMASK250|dMASK250|dMASK250|dMASK250|dMASK250 - the masking icon bar
|uHLUECKE|uhSTRqa|uhSTRq|uhSTRqe|uSTRrf|MWEXIT - the top icon bar
I would appreciate if you know a better name, I needed it pretty quickly, so I just had to invent a name to be able to upload it. The 250 is just a mnemonic for 250pixels. An example of usage you'll find in no:Mal:Grefsen linjekart. dMASK, a whole half-width icon as a mask is used for edge trimming in the overlay technique. The icon BSicon_c.svg is also needed for overlay technique only, it is used for alignment, and makes it possible to use overlay together with the conventional technique. I just named it 'c' because it was convenient to remember that c is half the width of d. An example of those icons you'll find at the top of no:Mal:Brynseng-Stortinget. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 17:53, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, those track maps are ... well, if those had been watches I would have called them "la Grande Complication" ;-)
The "c" is not standard (yet ;-), but ... well ... why not? Can't think of any other sensible meaning of a prefix-"c", so let's call it "compact", ok ?-)
The "MASK" shall whiten the middle of an icon to superimpose it with e.g. hSTRq? So let's just call it "(d)MASKq". Looking at your supercomplicated system of superimposing icons I now understand the sense of the full "dMASK", although a "MASK" with 500x500px size and a 250px white stripe in the middle would be much easier to allocate ... so well, it's of no use for de-WP and several other local projects without your sophisticated superimposing system, but go ahead! I'd place them in the general Category:Icons for railway descriptions. Regards axpdeHello! 19:24, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bot driven miscategorization in BSicons

[edit]

You robot is changing "Category:Icons for railway descriptions/parallel railways/bridge" to "Category:Icons for railway descriptions/set mixed/parallel railways" on file pages that are already tagged with Category:Icons for railway descriptions/set mixed/parallel railways/crossing road: Not only it is adding a cat which is parent of another already in use (a big no-no), it is removing legitimate categorization. This was done at least in:

Please make it stop. --Tuvalkin (talk) 18:09, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, BjørnN!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

BjornNbot error

[edit]

This edit was supposed to just add a category but it re-created auto-generated categories from license templates. This should not happen. AFAIR this category function has been fixed some time ago in the source code, maybe yours is outdated? --Denniss (talk) 20:45, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've now downloaded the latest version of core using git clone, my old version was core as of 2014-02-02. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 18:44, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But the error still persists, still an outdated component somewhere? Maybe Bot needs to be stopped and restarted to take effect? If it still doesn't work as intended please have a look at and maybe reopen Bugzilla58084. --Denniss (talk) 09:29, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The error seems to concern the add option, the move option is working correctly. In bugzilla the move option is reported as fixed, the add option is appearently still buggy.
I have deleted the old bot and then installed the current version complete new. The new version have also new bugs, for example is a category page move now always performed when the target category does not exist, even when a subset only of the images in a category are moved, using the option -match. The bug does not appear when the target category is created manually before the move, this was not necessary with the old version. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 09:52, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are these problems already reported at Bugzilla? --Denniss (talk) 12:30, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don`t have an account there. BjørnN (talk) 17:20, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is the new verson already live? Got a quick reaction after reopening the bugreport, please check. --Denniss (talk) 15:11, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Using git today, 28 files was changed. I'll check category.py soon. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 17:45, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have not tested the add option yet, however, the move option now produces strange duplicates of the interwiki links, as you can see here.

Alle bildene har Author: Bergen Public Library Norway from Bergen, Norway. Se f.eks File:Luigi_Cherubini_portrait_(9566464843).jpg for et eksempel. TommyG (talk) 20:27, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vinguru (talk) 06:17, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Airports in Antarctica has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
