SMUR (Emergency medical intervention) on the Vauban place
[edit]Hello,
I even asked myself the question of the advisability of publishing these four photos.
But, while taking them, I remained at a distance, just like the many people present in the square at that time. But, as the victim is not visible and completely anonymous, I saw in this photo a tribute to the daily work of the rescuers. And this is also the objective when I offer it as a quality image.
Kind regards.
(Google translate from french).
-- JmH2O(talk) 18:13, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- Merci Jmh2o!
- Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I did expect your reason in some way because the image clearly shows your large distance. So I think if you were a journalist making a photo report about this, if you had been close to the medical personnel, showing their work, their tools, their emotions, those people's break room and their whole work it would be OK. But I assume: Mais tu n'étais qu'un passant qui se trouvait là-bas. (But you were just a passerby who was there.)
- If we promote images here at QIC we tell others to use these image as something good, as good examples of something. And here we would tell: If you are seeing an emergency from some distance, you should stop and take a nice picture. That's a story I think we should not tell. August Geyler (talk) 18:35, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- I hesitated to take the photo, and then, I decided to do it for the reasons given above.
- I'm not a journalist, but I've seen people die in front of me.
- Just two months ago. In a train accident near my house, actually a suicide. I was there with my camera, But I didn't take any photos. The body was in three pieces: head, torso and legs. I simply forbade anyone to film with their smartphone. And I notified the emergency services.
- Here are photos after the accident : Category:Travaux au passage à niveau 104 Infrabel (2024)
- So, I accept the non-promotion of the photo.
- Kind regards.

- Oh my good! What a terrible experience you had to make. I am very sorry for you. It sounds like you got traumatised by this. I hope you can find a way to deal with this.

4-H Mädchen
[edit]Hallo August,
- Hallo Frank,

QI - consensual review
[edit]Hello, few days ago I nominated my photo for QI [1]. Somebody voted for it, someone else suggested a perspective correction. Why did you close the review/discussion before I had a chance to apply the suggestion? JiriMatejicek (talk) 20:14, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hey Jiri! I am sorry for the outcome. But the rules say, that CR are to be closed, when no more vote is made within the last 48h. So that's the time anyone has to react. As there was no more vote, and no response within that time I closed it. August (talk) 20:21, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- OK, you probably didn't make these rules yourself. But the list of nominations spans two weeks, so I don't think there is need to hurry so much. If it's a mere yes/no voting, then OK, but if there is suggestion for modification, the author should get a decent chance to apply it. JiriMatejicek (talk) 07:34, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- Ahoj Jiri,
- I have to explain it a bit more in detail. But first I'd like to apologize for your inconvenience. It is very good that your are taking photos for Commons and taking part in the QIC process. Let me try to explain the process a bit more in to detail and let me make a suggestion, that will help us enjoying OIC in the future:
- There is no two weeks rule.
- Nominations are listed for seven days. At the end of day seven / beginn of day eight, they are sorted out as unassigned if they got no vote or comment.
- If a nomination got a vote, a maximum 48 hour rule comes into action. After this time the vote is processed automatically by the QIC-bot.
- If a nomination got no vote but a comment, there is no rule in place now. Theoretically the nomination could stay in the status for ever. But usually reviewers tend to vote on these nominations after a week. The vote will be processed like described above.
- CR: So if someone is opposing to an existing vote or the nominator wants to get more opinions, than Consensual Review (CR) comes into action. This was the case with your nomination in question.
- The rules say the process can take up to 8 days (or longer if there have been new votes within the last 48 hours). So in theory, if every 47 hours one vote would be added, it could take much longer. In practice it does not expand that much, because after a view days most active reviewers have pointed out their statements and more votes are unlikely after a week or so.
- The time for CR is counted from the moment when someone initiated the CR-process.
- If there is a majority for decline or promote, the process can be switched to result when nobody did a a vote within the last 48 hours.
- If there is no majority for decline or promote than the process ends as inconclusive when 8 days are gone since start of CR and no vote was added within the last 48 hours.
- So to respond to your suggestion not to hurry: In your case there was of course no explicit need to hurry. If I would have known, that you are preparing a reupload or in any way working on it, I would not have closed it, even if I could. The problem here is (I try to give you an idea of the bigger picture of that process) that we always try to keep the CR process as efficient as possible to not overcrowd the CR page. There are days, were over 10 new CR start. If you take into account that some CRs can take a longer time, it can happen that there are 40 oder 50 open CRs at the same time. To go through this huge amount as a reviewer coming back after a view days would mean spending hours. That's why we try to end CRs as soon as possible, if there is no other indication. Which brings me to my suggestion:
- Tell the others about your plan to edit your nomination if it takes a while!
- You nominated your image on 17th July. On the same day you got two reviews.
- Support Good quality. --Alexander-93 15:23, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose Perspective errors should be corrected. --Ermell 20:11, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- So on the same day you could see that there is something to do about your image. You could have reacted by saysing that you will do something.
- Two days later Plozesser added the same oppose
- Oppose Per Ermell. --Plozessor 04:31, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- I closed the process on day 4 after your nomination at 08:28, 21 July 2024 (UTC) because there was no sign, that you are going to react. Please don't get me wrong. You might be engaged in reacting in those types of situations but for me this is not predictable very easily. There are many CRs were the nominator is not reacting, sometimes willingly. So It would have helped everybody if you would have pointed out your plan to do something with the file at any point within these for days. There are even templates for this:
{{doing}}
→ Doing…{{done}}
→ Done{{Already done}}
→ Already done{{Half done}}
→ Half done
- So in short: I am very sorry for the outcome in this case. I would like to do better in the future by remembering your explizite wishes for a longer reaction time. But I am asking you for pointing out your plan for redoing a file. You could just say, "sorry guys I will need a couple of days to do this." Than I think, nobody would close such a CR case.
- Best regards August (talk) 12:36, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello,
- thank you for detailed explanation. Now I understand the whole process and your approach more. In my case, I didn't look at the reactions immediately (because it often takes longer and because one gets notification only when the image is promoted); when I noticed the suggestion I decided to follow it, but didn't have time to react right away and then I was away from the internet for 2 days. That was just to explain my situation, no need to react further. I will remember your suggestions. JiriMatejicek (talk) 08:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Detail is too low
[edit]Hello Augustgeyler, Greetings!
Regarding this: [2] could you plz give a brief about what is ‘Detail is too low’ ? I am asking you because I recently got a review on a Quality Image nomination, as the same ([3]).
--Gpkp (talk) 18:15, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Gpkp,
- "Detail is too low," or Level of detail too low, refers to an issue that can arise for various reasons. Essentially, it indicates that despite having an adequate resolution, the image lacks sufficient surface structure or fine details. This can occur, for example, if an image has been heavily de-noised. De-noising reduces fine structures to eliminate sensor noise or film grain, but if overused, it can also erase important details such as fine grains of sand on a beach, delicate grass blades in a garden, or intricate textures on a façade.
- If you're shooting with a DSLR and processing from RAW, you can easily correct this by manually adjusting the processing settings. Alternatively, shooting with a lower ISO will result in less noise, thereby reducing the need for de-noising. However, if you're using a smartphone, addressing this issue can be more challenging. Smartphones typically have very small lenses, which often require higher ISO settings. To create the impression of a high-quality camera, smartphones usually apply intense default processing, including strong de-noising. This is often combined with aggressive sharpening, which can further contribute to the loss of detail.
- Determining whether the level of detail is too low or adequate is difficult because it must be evaluated in relation to the situation, lighting, resolution, and subject matter. This is why the criterion is often debated among different reviewers assessing the same image. August (talk) 19:18, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- Augustgeyler, Thank you for all the details. --Gpkp (talk) 16:39, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]English · français
When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Inductive axle counter. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion).
