Hello, Alexrk2!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Alexrk2. I noticed that you are the author of File:Europe laea location map.svg. I've used your map as a template a couple times. Thanks for that. I wonder if you are able to make a version which also includes Greenland? I'd like to make a map of the Norway and her dependencies in the 13th century; so the map would feature locations in Scandinavia, the British Isles, Iceland and Greenland, etc. File:Europe laea location map.svg is perfect except it only grazes Greenland. Can you make a version with Greenland included?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 05:17, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's OK. Don't worry, I'll figure something out.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 04:04, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MfG -- ClemensFranz (talk) 19:03, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

--Alexrk2 (talk) 22:25, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Kannst Du so etwas machen? -- Clemens Franz (talk) 16:12, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
-- Clemens Franz (talk) 18:55, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
--Alexrk2 (talk) 17:35, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I saw that you created the locator map for Maryland (File:USA Maryland location map.svg). If it isn't a problem, I was wondering if you could make a locator map for the city of Baltimore? Solar-Wind (talk) 14:42, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean a location map similar like this map? --Alexrk2 (talk) 20:09, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that was the kind of map I had in mind. I edit a lot of Baltimore articles for buildings/monuments, and the locator map for Maryland is too large to clearly show their location in Baltimore. Solar-Wind (talk) 23:59, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have created the map and template.. en:Template:Location map United States Baltimore. Btw. in the other Wikis we have integrated the OpenStreetMap-Widget directly as a embedded, collapsible window. Look for example at the article de:Brooklyn and click on the hyperlink "Karte" (upper right corner). I don't know, why EN didn't use the embedded OSM map, but I guess, this would supersede these static city location maps in most cases. --Alexrk2 (talk) 21:49, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I didn't know about that. Thank you very much for the map, I greatly appreciate it. Solar-Wind (talk) 22:59, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

File:Haig Barracks Berlin (Geoportal Berlin DOP20RGB).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Baustein für Digitale farbige Orthophotos

[edit]

Anmerkungen bzw. Änderungen sind willkommen. Viele Grüße, Yellowcard (talk) 19:57, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Yellowcard, vielen Dank. --Alexrk2 (talk) 20:22, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Grüße, Yellowcard (talk) 22:53, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FDMS  4    23:54, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yellowcard (talk) 09:19, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ach so :( . FDMS  4    12:10, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Viele Grüße Yellowcard (talk) 14:00, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
{{PD-self}} hat ein rundes PD-Symbol (und
PD-Layout
statt
Other License-Layout
FDMS  4    16:31, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Gruß Yellowcard (talk) 07:22, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
--Alexrk2 (talk) 15:11, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

[edit]

Hallo Alexrk2,

Wind speeds map request

[edit]

Hi, I noticed your windkraftanlagen in 2007 image. I was wondering whether you would like to make a new "Average wind speeds at 10m" and a new "Average wind speeds at 80m" image. I uploaded these a while back but have been deleted since then since the permissions of these were appearantly not suffient (I had permissions from the authors, but there were still some legal issues). So, if you can simply take over the dots of those maps and put them on a new world map (say https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/BlankMap-World-large.png ) that would eliminate those legal issues, and the files can be reuploaded to wikimedia, and benefit the environmental movement.

The maps can still be found at http://windturbineins.com/_literature_64415/Wind_Power_Overview (wind atlas), and I think at some other sites, ... as well.

Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnen

[edit]

Hallo Alexrk2,

Request help

[edit]

Hello! I see that you made a nice little map image at File:USA Iowa location map.svg. I like the functionality of dropping coordinates/points on the map to indicate various locations. I would like to have maps that fit within the Wikipedia style for Wikipedia articles Great Plains Athletic Conference (South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa), Heart of America Athletic Conference (Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri), and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (Kansas and Oklahoma). If they look good, I'd like to add such maps for each sports conference at that level (NAIA).

I'd ultimately like to learn how to make these background maps. I've got a working understanding of template:Location map+, but am having trouble getting the right image behind it. Can you advise?--Paulmcdonald (talk) 21:45, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You opinion

[edit]

I noticed that you are very good at map making. Would you have a moment to look at w:Talk:Manassas, Virginia#RfC about the large map of surrounding counties? Perhaps this map can be reduced in size, but still have legible text. Your opinion would be appreciated. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:32, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alexrk2,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:EU OCT and OMR map en.png is out of date. The status of Bermuda may have changed since it joined OCTA in 2014, also the situation with Netherlands Antilles is clearly outdated. While you at it, please also consider saving it in a vector format. Could you update it? Thanks again. Cherkash (talk) 20:22, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming of file

[edit]

Hi, Alexrk2, this file should be renamed because of #2. I would suggest: File:RODI - CITTA copper engraving by BERTELLI Donato 06017.jpg. Since you were the uploader, thnk you for your comment. :) Lotje (talk) 06:26, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Commons bot inactivity

[edit]

Hello!

Your bot has been listed at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 5 as being inactive for over two years. As a housekeeping measure we'd like to remove the bot flag from inactive bot accounts, unless you expect the bot will be operated again in the near future. If you wish for your bot to retain it's bot flag, please speak up on the deflag page. If you consent to the removal of the bot flag (or do not reply on the deflag page) you can re-request the bot flag at Commons:Bots/Requests should you need it again. Hi Alex, I hope you are well. I came across your wonderful map of rivers of Europe, but was wondering about choices that seem a bit weird to me, and was hoping you could clarify your thinking or whether they might be unintentional. If you look at the Loire on the map, for example, it starts as the Loire, but then upstream of the confluence of the Loire and the Allier, it follows the Allier rather than the Loire (see File:MapAllier.jpg). Something similar seems to happen with the Drava, which seems to disappear after the confluence with the Mur, and your map instead seems to follow the Mur. Same with Neman vs Neris... Was this intentional? Cheers, Storkk (talk) 06:56, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ever work with Shapefiles or GeoJSON?

Hi Alexrk2 - love all of your maps. Thanks for your contributions!

I'm working with the WikiMaps group & am looking to build Wikimedia's volume of GIS-based data files for historical maps. Is there any chance you've built some maps in any GIS formats and then converted them to SVG? Or, do you have any georeferenced svg's? Thanks in advance for any help. --Jeffme (talk) 00:42, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:USA_Alaska_location_map.svg

[edit]

When I viewed the SVG file in my browser (Firefox 61), the borders and water features rendered were clipped at 800x619 instead of the entire map (on Chrome, only the oceans rendered, no border or river lines). I DLed the file and took a look, and noticed 800 and 619 used as dimensions several times in the XML, and tried seeing what would happen if I changed those to match the full dimensions of the image. The result in Firefox worked as expected of the original (and looked like the PNG versions on WP), though Chrome still didn't render it correctly. My SVG skills are very limited, so I was wondering if you could revisit your file on WP and see if there was any correction to be made (I do not trust my own edit of the DLed file, despite it working on my side). Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019

[edit]

Bonjour,

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

USA Louisiana location map

[edit]

Dear Alexrk2,

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings are currently in the process of developing a new series of curriculum materials (called Smithsonian Folkways Learning Pathways) for educators (mostly music and social studies educators). These unique resources place recordings from the Smithsonian Folkways collection at the center of the learning experience. These will be FREE resources for all educators, everywhere. Each learning pathway is a curated musical journey through a historical, cultural, or musical theme (e.g. Music of the Chicano Movement; Sounds of the Civil Rights Movement; Cajun & Zydeco Music; etc...).

As part of these learning pathways, we are creating interactive student slideshows that will help teachers facilitate learning experiences in any educational environment both in-person or online. Michigan Shapefiles

[edit]

Hello,

I'm attempting to do an update of the map for the Lansing-East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. However, I can't find a shapefile that shows counties+the Great Lakes. I have separate shapefiles, but they don't line up. I see some maps you've made, and they show the international border, Canada, the lakes...everything you need. Are you using multiple shapefiles for this? If so, which ones? --Criticalthinker (talk) 08:59, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
