Kyllini mountain and Cave if Hermes

English: Mount Kyllini (Kylléné, Ziria) and surroundings, especially Cave of Hermes. The border between Arkadia, Achaea (Achaia) and Corinthia (Korinthia) in the Peloponnese. See Pausanias VIII, 17. Here is the birthplace of Hermes, but also of the Pan, see Homer's Hymn for Pan: "Hermes ... came to Arkadia ... there where his sacred place is as god of Kyllene. For there, though a god, he used to tend curly-fleeced sheep."

Zde je rodiště Hermovo, ale také Panovo, viz Homérský Hymnus una Pana: “Hermés… svůj kyllénský okrsek svatý. Člověku smrtelnému, ač bůh byl, pásal tam stáda ovcí s šedivou vlnou, když mocná touha v něm vzplála s nymfou sličnou, jíž Dryops byl otcem, se v rozkoši spojit. Došel blahého sňatku I zrodila nymfa v svém dome Hermovi milého syna, hned při zrodu divného zjevu: kozlí měl růžky, byl křikloun a veselý smíšek… Jménem Pan ho pak nazvali, že rozveselil tak všecky.”

English: Cave where Hermes is said to have been born. The entrance to the huge underground labyrinth is from a mount over ravine of Flambouritsa in the Mountains of Kyllini (Κυλλήνη, Ziria) in the Peloponnese, about 1660 m above sea level. It was especially revered by the inhabitants of Arcadia. As early as the 'Homeric' Hymn to Hermes (Hymni Homerici IV. In Hermam), it is described as the abode of the Cyllenian goddess or nymph Maia and the birthplace of Hermes. The terrain inside the cave is steep and dangerous!!

Čeština: Jeskyně Hermova narození v masivu pohoří Kylléné (Κυλλήνη, Kyllini, Ziria) na Peloponésu. Vchod (ve výšce asi 1660 m n. m.) je ve strmém svahu menší hory nad údolím Flambouritsa. Toto místo ctili zvláště obyvatelé Arkádie. Už v „Homérském“ Hymnu k Hermovi (Hymni Homerici IV. In Hermam) se popisuje jako příbytek kyllénské bohyně nebo víly Maie a rodiště Hermovo. Terén uvnitř jeskyně je strmý a nebezpečný!!

English: Pausanias, Peregrinatio VIII, 17, 1-2: "The highest mountain in Arkadia is Kyllene, on the top of which is a dilapidated temple of Hermes Kyllenios. It is clear that Kyllenos, the son of Elatos, gave the mountain its name and the god his surname. In days of old, men made wooden images, so far as I have been able to discover, from the following trees ebony, cypress, cedar, oak, yew, lotus. But the image of Hermes Kyllenios is made of none of these, but of juniper (θύον, Tetraclinis articulata or Callitris quadrivalvis) wood. Its height, I conjecture, is about eight feet." See Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae 225: "Those who first built temples to the gods . . . Lycaon [the mythical first king of Arkadia], son of Pelasgus, built a temple [the first] to Mercurius [Hermes] of Cyllene in Arcadia."

Čeština: Pausaniás, Cesta po Řecku VIII, 17, 1-2: “Za hrobem Aipytovým se zdvíhá nejvyšší hora v Arkádii Kylléné a na vrcholku hory je zřícený chrám Herma Kyllénského. Je zřejmé, že hora byla pojmenována po Kyllénovi, synu Elatovu, a že od ní dostal bůh (Hermés) své příjmení. Lidé v dřívějších dobách zhotovovali – pokud jsem se mohl poučit – dřevěné sochy z ebenu, cypřiše, cedru, dubového dřeva, z tisu a lótu. Socha kyllénského Herma není z ničeho takového, avšak byla zhotovena z chvojky (θύον, Tetraclinis articulata nebo Callitris quadrivalvis); přisoudil bych jí asi 8 stop. Kylléné má také další zvláštnost: jsou na ní bílí kosové…” Viz také Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae 225: “Ti, kdo první postavili chrámy bohům… Lykaón [mýtický první král Arkadie], syn Pelasgův, postavil v Arkádii [první] chrám Hermovi Kyllénskému.“
