Ask for re-license - Flickr - deleted

[edit]

I am an administrator on Wikimedia Commons (the free media repository for Wikipedia) and one (or more) of your Flickr images:

<image Flickr link>

was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and was in use on at least one Wikipedia page.

I see that you have licensed this image as 'All Rights Reserved' which does not allow Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia to display the image, I have been forced to delete our copy of your image as an 'unfree Flickr license' but I wanted to ask if you would consider re-licensing this image as either Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) or Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike (CC-BY-SA) so that it can be restored to Wikimedia Commons and therefore continue to be displayed on Wikipedia? Changing the license can be done on Flickr by first going to the image page, click on the Edit link next to the license in the Owner Settings section to the right of the image. Then select either Attribution Creative Commons (CC-BY) or Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA) Information on Creative Commons licenses types can be found here:

https://creativecommons.org/about/licenses

If you would prefer not to change the license on Flickr but want to allow the image to remain on Wikimedia Commons/Wikipedia you can declare that you license your image using a free license (CC-BY/ CC-BY-SA in an email and we can document this in our permission ticketing system. Just email me back declaring that you are the author of the image, please include a link to the image on Flickr and declare that you license the image using either CC-BY or CC-BY-SA. I will handle everything.

Thanks for your consideration. Please let me know if you decide to re-license your image by emailing me at captain.tucker1@gmail.com. Thanks

Non-free flickr licenses

[edit]

Hello! Thank you for your contributions to the Commons. I'd like to point out that we only accept Flickr images tagged as BY (CC-BY), BY SA (CC-BY-SA), or the "No known copyright restrictions" license used by members of the Flickr Commons. Please see COM:FLICKR for more information.

Unfortunately several of the photos you uploaded recently were only available on flickr under licenses including ND (No Derivatives) and NC (Non-Commercial). "No derivatives" and "non-commercial" licenses are not permitted on Wikimedia Commons because they are considered 'unfree'; ND licences do not allow modification (such as cropping or retouching) and NC licenses do not allow commercial use (such as selling to schools an educational DVD of Wikipedia articles, one of which features the photograph). Even if a license is BY SA NC, with the first two parts being acceptable, the NC part of the license means the photo is not permitted here on the Commons.

You can find photos that ARE under licenses permitted on the Commons by searching via this link, which only includes images licensed as BY (CC-BY) or BY SA (CC-BY-SA). You can also use the "Advanced Search" tool on Flickr and select all three boxes at the bottom of the page: "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content", "Find content to use commercially", and "Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon".

If you find a flickr user with useful and educational photographs that are licensed with NC or ND, you can ask them if they might consider changing the license to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA so that they can be uploaded to the Commons and used on Wikimedia projects. They might even want to join our community and share their photos themselves.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on my talk page; and don't forget to check COM:FLICKR for more information about flickr licenses, useful links, and search tips. Cheers.
