I'm confused

[edit]

How do you mark an article as reviewed? -Nard 01:47, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Once the review is completed, edit the Image page and add the parameter

|reviewed=yes

to the template. -SCEhardT 16:30, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Description

[edit]

Everything seems to say "This image does not appear to have a description in your interface language. Please add one!", and no descriptions ever show up when you hover over a link. How can I help fix this? (I would also like to make the above message a link to a page with the procedure to fix it... -- Mjquin id (talk) 23:39, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sex/Gender

[edit]

I noticed the {{{sex}}} is not being used in the template, should it be deleted from the documentation or should it be (re)used in the template ?

I added it to the template. --Slomox (talk) 11:32, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I recently noticed this addition due to its strange behavior. I mention it here: [1] Paraphrased quote from my edit summary: Not filling out the sex parameter causes the "Sex of the narrator:" information line to appear even though it is blank. Also gender-male is "He edits wiki pages" instead of "male". --3ICE (talk) 23:37, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2 links: List of spoken articles, Spoken Wikipedia WikiProject

[edit]

There is a fine parameter: |wiki_lang=. But, could you add two parameters for the line "See also: List of spoken articles, Spoken Wikipedia WikiProject", e.g.:

... or just, |list= and |project=.

You can look at my problem at the page File:Ru-Russia part 7 Military and Religion.ogg. "See also" refers to articles in English Wikipedia instead of Russian Wikipedia. Thanks. -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 16:25, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. Cool! I see the switch :) -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 16:35, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template improvement

[edit]

Now I am happy, because I have added Russian related lines and now Russian audio articles are o'key (see previous post). But. Let's look in the future...

New languages will begin to use this template, new lines of code for each language will be added to this template. It will become huge and inconvenient for editing. See, e.g., my favourite list of languages in the Wiktionary [2].

So, I propose to replace LangSwitch blocks in this template (which relate to the language) by the parameters which will be defined in the corresponded templates, e.g. Template:Russian spoken article, Template:English spoken article, Template:Chinese spoken article, Template:Dutch spoken article... which call this template.

I am afraid that my English is not so good to explain my ideas, but I hope you understand me :) -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 12:58, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

language and categories

[edit]

I think this template needs a "language" parameter to record which language it is. Then we can automatically add the file into the appropriate subcategory of Category:Spoken Wikipedia. --John Vandenberg (chat) 05:43, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, it does have a language parameter "wiki_lang". That isn't a good name for it. John Vandenberg (chat) 05:47, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with Template:Gesprochener Artikel

[edit]

Jarekt suggested to merge Template:Gesprochener Artikel into this one. Please don't do this, as it's also used in the German Wikipedia, what is needed to make the upload process a bit less complicated. --LordOider (talk) 23:15, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

LordOider, sorry I just noticed your reply. I was lately working on merging about 5 different Spoken article templates into this one. Most of files using them were created in 2005-2006 and did not use {{Information}} template. I replaced all instances of Template:Gesprochener Artikel with template:Spoken article and rewrote the unused Template:Gesprochener Artikel template using template:Spoken article. The best way to use it in the future would be to call {{subst:Gesprochener Artikel....}}. --Jarekt (talk) 15:17, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your effort Jarekt, but why do you change foreign language templates without asking the users at the appropriate projects? You also give no documentation of your changes. What is the aim of merging those templates? How should it be used?
Now the spoken articles are displayed with a mix of English and the adjusted language, could it be translated completely? Do you think it's necessary to have a description in your native language, for a foreign language audio file? --LordOider (talk)
This effort is part of m:File metadata cleanup drive and this of adding standard Infobox templates to all the files lacking them. And I was working on combining about 5 different spoken article templates (Template:Audio upload, Template:Gesprochener Artikel, Template:Spoken article entry, Template:Gesprochener Artikel DZB and Template:Položka namluveného článku) into one that might be used enough to be actually maintained in the future. Most individual templates were not maintained much in last decade and each was mostly used by a small group of mostly retired users. I have done similar thing in order to create {{Book}} and {{Artwork}}. As for translations I just packed all the phrases I found in various templates into Template:Spoken article/i18n and hope that in the future people will help translating those phrases into their languages. I also make sure that all the parameters in the updated Template:Spoken article are well documented. I also feel that all infobox templates should be at least translated into English, so others know what is the file all about. --Jarekt (talk) 23:16, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for this information, it was helpful and sounds logical and useful.
Above you mentioned to use {{subst:Gesprochener Artikel....}}. What is this, how can it be used? Is it still possible to use Template:Gesprochener Artikel with the German parameters, as usual? Could they automatically be "translated" into Template:Spoken article, as your Bot did? --LordOider (talk)
Yes, if you place {{subst:Gesprochener Artikel....}} in the file instead of {{Gesprochener Artikel....}} than Template:Spoken article with english parameters will be saved. That was how I was doing all the changes by my bot. The only catch is that German version of the template supports multiple speakers and multiple parts of the same article and Template:Spoken article does not, so they would be omitted. If parameter is not in the current template:Gesprochener Artikel than it will be dropped. However those are quite rarely used. --Jarekt (talk) 20:03, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Something is wrong with this template

[edit]

Could someone with technical skills repair the template. I think it does not properly show the information, e. g. File:De-Musikinstrument-article.ogg. --Arnd (talk) 12:03, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed Someone added documentation to Template:Spoken article/i18n which was transcluded each time template was used. --Jarekt (talk) 12:41, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jarekt. --Arnd (talk) 12:52, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Errors with first_part and next_part

[edit]

There are errors with this template now, I suppose. The parameters first_part and next_part don't work. See for example the file from English Wikipedia File:Introduction_to_Evolution_Part_01.ogg (without error) and the same file at commons: File:Introduction to Evolution Part 01.ogg with error: the link "Go to the next part" is red, though the link to the second part is presented in the file description:

|next_part= Introduction_to_Evolution_Part_02.ogg

Please, help to solve this technical problem! -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 09:07, 4 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew, I am confused. I do not see red "Go to the next part" link in File:Introduction to Evolution Part 01.ogg and the file on English Wikipedia is showing exactly the same metadata and should look the same. Could you check if it is still an issue? --Jarekt (talk) 19:38, 4 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I tested and I found that... when I log out then I see Commons interface in English and all is OK.
When I logged (with Russian interface) then I see the following read link "Go to the next part". But instead of "Go to the next part" (in English) it should be some phrase in Russian, for example "Переход к следующей части". -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 19:53, 4 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed it. the issue was that Template:Spoken article/i18n had no russian translation for "go_to_next_part" phrase and the default was calling {{Please translate}} function which was designed to help you add the missing text. But that mechanism was not very clear. Anyway adding Russian translation fixed the problem. --Jarekt (talk) 03:40, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thank you very much! -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 11:55, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

See also

[edit]

Wiki links in the "See also" box don't work:

See also: [[::en:Wikipedia:Spoken articles|List of spoken articles]] and [[::en:Wikipedia:Wikiproject Spoken Wikipedia|Spoken Wikipedia WikiProject]].

Either Template:Spoken article/i18n should be fixed, or Template:See also is broken... --Djadjko (talk) 00:23, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

hAudio

[edit]

It has only just some to my attention that in this edit, User:Jarekt removed the <span class="fn"> markup that is part of the hAudio microformat. No reason for this was given. Given subsequent changes, I'm not sure where this should now go, but it should be restored. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:48, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Andy, As discussed in Merge_with_Template:Gesprochener_Artikel section above, in February 2015 I was working on merging 5 different templates used as infoboxes for spoken articles into a single template. Resulting templatehad features taken from several templates and I guess other templates were not using this microformat, and it was not clear what it was. If someone is using or planning to use <span class="fn"> markup for something I do not mind putting it back (maybe with explanation of what is it and what role it serves). If people or tools are using microformats, than maybe we should put in the template documentation information about it and who uses it. That way we can ask if everything still works after major changes. Commons:WikiProject Microformats was mostly inactive in last 8 years, and undocumented features with unknown purpose tend to disappear. --Jarekt (talk) 18:51, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gender

[edit]

Is the gender so important? I point out that some males may have femalish sound and vice versa. And also today, when we acknowledge more geneders this is kind of limiting for those, who consider to have a different gender from these. Could be fixed by something like pitch with two values, low and high. Juandev (talk) 10:14, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
