Wikisource

[edit]

Hi. Admins - please change the following:

  • Update the link to English Wikisource as: s:Main Page.
  • Change the brief description of Wikisource to "The Free Library" (its new motto and as it appears on the Wikipedia Main Page).

Can you add : Category:Template sisterprojects & Category:Commons-en ? --Pseudomoi 20:56, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Species

[edit]

Wikispecies was recently moved to species.wikimedia.org so... if any admin can change that, that'd be nice. gren 11:01, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please change Wikisource-logo.jpg to Wikisource-logo.png, as Wikisource logo was changed. It should be done also in Template:Sisterprojects-de. Thanks. – rotemlissTalk 19:41, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity

[edit]

It would be appreciated if you would add Wikiversity to the list of sister projects.

The (temporary) logo that Wikiversity is using is Image:Sciences humaines.svg.

An example of another Wikimedia project doing this is at b:Template:Sisterprojects.

I am trying to make this request at all of the other Wikimedia sister projects. Thank you for these changes. --RHorning 02:57, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please use (Image:Wikiversity-logo.svg)
[edit]

Hi admins. The current link to Wikisource is: Wikisource:Main Page:English. This has been incorrect for a long time. It should read simply: Wikisource:Main Page. 80.178.222.37 21:23, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity - still redlinked

[edit]

Looks like Wikiversity is still redlinked on the main page. I'm guessing this has to do with the fact that the link is just labelled as "v", which may be a legitimate link to Wikiversity, I don't know. However, possibly due to capitalization restrictions, the link is being presented as "V", which is a redlink. Can it be changed to "Wikiversity" instead? Anyways, it's still showing as redlinked on the main page, despite the template appearing honky-dory. --Canuckguy 02:30, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please use Image:Wikinews-logo.svg instead of Image:WikiNews-Logo.svg. – rotemlissTalk 17:27, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Format suggestion

[edit]

Suggest the each descriptive word precedes image+link so the hyphens may be rendered unnecessary:

Coordination Meta-Wiki Meta-Wiki Encyclopedia Wikipedia Wikipedia Dictionary Wiktionary Wiktionary
Textbooks Wikibooks Wikibooks Sources Wikisource Wikisource Quotations Wikiquote Wikiquote
Species Wikispecies Wikispecies News Wikinews Wikinews Learning Wikiversity Wikiversity

Regards, David Kernow (talk) 16:47, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS In the current version of the template, the width of the Wiktionary logo is 21px, unlike the 20px used by the others.

Descriptions

[edit]

Hi commoners; I think that the term "sources" for Wikisource is quite misleading, or at least not very clear. Could it be "books" or "texts"? Has been there a discussion about it? Thanks for your time, cheers --Aubrey (talk) 14:51, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I changed some of them. I think the goal was before to use single words (see above), which make poor descriptions for most projects. Rocket000 (talk) 22:03, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion is above from quite a while ago. It should be "Library" ("The Free Library") just as Wikipedia is "Encyclopedia" (from "The Free Encyclopedia"). Dovi (talk) 16:49, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's why I said "I think the goal was before..." and change many of them from single words... "Library", while it may make for a nice tag-line, isn't that clear by itself (to me anyway). I got "source documents" from meta:Main Page. Using "library" by itself begs the question "A library of what?", since it's obviously not same kind of library I go to to borrow books and other forms of media. The word "Free", as in how it's commonly used on Wikimedia, i.e. "free as in freedom", would be an adequate modifier but I would like to avoid using "free" unless we add it to everything. Anyway, I'll change it if you really want. Rocket000 (talk)
"since it's obviously not same kind of library I go to to borrow books and other forms of media". Actually, yes it is. Dovi (talk) 05:51, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Um, not really... Rocket000 (talk) 05:53, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why not? The site is mostly about making digital texts available of the very same books and texts you would find in your public or university library, though usually older ones of course for copyright reasons. What major difference do you find? Dovi (talk) 12:01, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a website, not a physical building. They don't have books, film, music, periodicals, etc. They have digital versions of some public domain texts. You don't borrow anything. You just read it online like any other site, e.g. Google Books or the Internet Archive, which also aren't libraries in that sense. It's a wiki where anyone can contribute. They're just different things entirely. I'm not saying it's not a library in some other sense, I'm just saying it's not a library in th most common sense. It's a little unclear. Furthermore, we could call Wikibooks a library too, so we need something to distinguish them. What better way than saying what they actually contain? Rocket000 (talk) 14:00, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So too is Wikipedia a website, not a physical encyclopedia published on paper. Does that mean you can't label it an encyclopedia? "They don't have books, film, music, periodicals" -- Except for films (to the best of my knowledge), yes we do.
A "library" doesn't mean a borrowing system (the American municipal model you are thinking of is beautiful but not exhaustive), but rather an important collection of books. There are public libraries and private libraries, university libraries and the private libraries of scholars. Some use a borrowing system and some do not.
Wikibooks contains one kind of book only: "How to" or educational course books, and only new ones written by wiki-contributors. (What Americans call "textbooks", and thus how the project got its misleading name.) So its description description should reflect the specific kind of books that it has. Wikisource is not limited to any specific kind of book, which is why it calls itself a library. Dovi (talk) 04:01, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say it's not a library, I said it doesn't fit the primary definition (which covers a lot more than the American municipal model and includes university/private libraries), so it's kinda vague and unclear. See en:Library to get a good idea of the primary way English speakers use the word. A building or structure is part of that definition. Anyway, Wikisource is limited (which is okay) as it only contains free content publications. Rocket000 (talk) 04:24, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm... but maybe the structures containing the texts are becoming electronic today, just as they did a few years ago for the encyclopedia. The Britannica can license non-free material for its encyclopedia and provide them at non-free terms; Wikipedia cannot, but that makes it no less of an encyclopedia. Anyway, thanks for the useful and open discussion. I am an English speaker, by the way, and I am aware that with so many overlapping meanings it is often hard to find the right term for something, and that a perfect term is rare. Dovi (talk) 05:41, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can we change the description for MediaWiki to "Wiki software" instead of "Wiki software development"? First, I think "Wiki software development" is too long in the context of the table. Second, I think it's a bit misleading as I imagine most of the people that visit it are there to download or learn about wiki software, not to develop it. Maybe these templates should be renamed and migrated to the Translate extension so that they can be updated all at once. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:20, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree @Tacsipacsi. It becomes a lot headache to locally (+manually) do a lot of stuff over here and there. I'd love to have Wikifunctions listed but I don't see myself ready to apply the change. I'd leave this to admins who are experts in the templates. ─ The Aafī (talk) 22:16, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf, Tacsipacsi, and TheAafi: ✓ Done with adding wikifunctions. I also started at moving the templates into Translate extension, but it is slower then expected as translations from each template has to be copied one at a time to the new format. At this point I did 86 with 58 to go. If someone can help most of the templates from Category:Sisterproject templates still need to be saved into the new format at Template:Sisterprojects/i18n. --Jarekt (talk) 03:17, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
