[edit]

{{Edit request}} Please replace Wiktionary-logo-en.svg with Wiktionary-logo-en-v2.svg per phab:T138801. File:Wiktionary-logo-en-v2.svg is the wordless version of File:WiktionaryEn - DP Derivative.svg . —andrybak (talk) 08:22, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It is completely unacceptable that the links almost always go to the English language versions of the sister projects. Especially from the multilingual project Wikimedia Commons. That really isn't right. It's no wonder that so many people believe that the English language Wikipedia is THE Wikipedia, while the rest are just offshoots. Of course that's not the case, each language version is unique, supported by a unique community. We're having problems in the German-speaking world again because of things that happen on the English language version of Wikipedia, but which are blamed on Wikipedia as a whole because people are unable to differentiate. But how can you do it outside of Wikipedia if it doesn't even happen in the project? In any case, things can't go on like this. There are neutral target pages like https://www.wikipedia.org/ https://wikisource.org/wiki/Main_Page or https://www.wikiquote.org/ . This definitely needs to be changed. I support this request. English language version is not THE Wikipedia. JPF (talk) 16:13, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For me all the links are linking to German projects or German pages, if de-projects don't exist. It seems to depend on the language settings of the project, what in my opinion is absolutely reasonable. Stepro (talk) 17:09, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can confirm Stepro's observation. If my interface language is set to German in Special:Preferences, this template links to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/de:[1] which is a redirect to German-language Wikipedia, so that seems fine. If you're visiting Commons as a user without an account, it's offering you to set the language to your browser's preference, and then will also offer the link to German-language (or your respective language) Wikipedia. So this template doesn't seem to be the issue; however, the sidebar links are a different thing. For example, if you visit Category:Fossils as a random category, you get first offered English Wikipedia and English Wikiversity under "In anderen Projekten", only after that other Wikipedia language versions under "In der Wikipedia". But this hasn't to do with this template and would need discussion in another place (COM:VPP?). Gestumblindi (talk) 17:20, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Das Problem betrifft also ausschließlich nicht-angemeldete Benutzer?
Raymond (talk) 20:15, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The EN WP article is nearly always the one that is most up-to-date, most comprehensive, and highest quality (and there are various sources and studies also finding this; this is only especially the case for smaller Wikipedias). I think the EN WP article should always be linked in a well visible way in addition to the one for the user's configured language if such is configured or inferrable. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:46, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, English-language Wikipedia at least is full of completely outdated and low-quality articles as soon as the topic is specific to a region outside the English-speaking world; for topics pertaining to France, for example, French Wikipedia is of course usually more up-to-date, the same goes for Germany, Switzerland (with its four languages) etc. Gestumblindi (talk) 21:31, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
True, that's one of the reasons for why the version of language the user configured should also be displayed there. Such subjects however are only a very small share when it comes to e.g. the percentage of categories on Commons and there are also cases where even there the English version is better or more up to date or the only version that exists (that may only be the case for a while). Raymond (talk) 05:29, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
