Sides

[edit]

Currently, the template supports "recto" and "verso", which are perfectly fine to describe inscription (Template:Inscription) placement on coins, medals, papyri, sheets of paper, parchment and the like.

With inscriptions on buildings, sarcophagi etc., however, they sound rather funny. You simply don't say so, because you don't "turn them over" ("vertere" in Latin, as the expression "verso" implies). – Should we add some more expressions for the sides, therefore? I'm thinking of "front", "front side" (DE: Vorderseite), "rear", "rear side" (DE: Rückseite), maybe also "top" (DE: Oberseite) and "bottom" (DE: Unterseite), "lid" (of a sarcophagus, DE: Deckel, IT: coperchio), and more.

While "right" and "left" seem to work basically, there seems to be an issue with capitalisation, as this is typically the first word of a new line or paragraph. See for example Category:Grave of La Fontaine (Père-Lachaise, division 25) and Category:Grave of Molière (Père-Lachaise, division 25).

What do you think? -- Martinus KE (talk) 12:23, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Martinus KE: Concerning adding the proposed new terms I don't have an opinion right now. I'm not sure if this template or another one would be the best place for that.
The capitalization is something that shouldn't be touched by this template in my eyes. {{ucfirst:string}} parser function could be used for cases it is needed, but I prefer cases like at Category:Grave of La Fontaine (Père-Lachaise, division 25) as not using sentence case even at the line start. Sometimes capitalization conveys meaning that can be lost if it we set it automatically – even though this might not be the case here. --Marsupium (talk) 00:41, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This template is used for {{Inscription}} which is used for {{Artwork}} which is all we have for architecture and archaeology right now, and there's no reason this parameter can't or shouldn't support these needs even if Artwork needs to be split. SamuelRiv (talk) 15:51, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
