Comparison

[edit]

The templates {{By}} and {{I18n/by}} have not values for all languages defined; the table shows which values exist. As always, the English value serves as the default value.

@Sarang: should we now wait for reaction from Camulogene77 — what did he craft the second template for? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:53, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Incnis Mrsi: I know: {{By}} was established by him just for translation; I abused the template by adding the parameter for the user, so it can be used by some other templates. Every adding of more correct translations will follow this intention - but if you are insure you may try to ask him.
I made the other template {{I18n/by}} because I had not been happy with some translations, see the differences shown in the table; it comes from different semantics of the word "by". -- sarang사랑 11:14, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
you are right. I propose to merge the two and redirect {{By}} to {{I18n/by}}, but I'm really not sure that the translations are correct. Camulogene77 (talk) 10:29, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarang: please, check your table against the present {{By}} and {{I18n/by}}. For Macedonian (mk) you wrote in an argument for another (random) language and I am not willing neither to hunt other mistakes one-by-one nor to replace your posting with my one. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:40, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I corrected the table with the new I18-mk value as corrected by Bjankuloski06. Unfortunately I do not have enough skill in languages that I wold be able to insert more or better values into either of both templates. -- sarang사랑 10:59, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Meta category switch

[edit]

@Sarang: no, Revision of Template:By is not a good idea. If you want a switch, then make an explicit parameter for {{By}} which can be activated from upper-level templates. Rendering of grammar should not have dependencies formulated in this way. Also, get rid of (mild) JuTa’s syndrome, please. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:32, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Incnis Mrsi: There are different possibilities to overcome the translations semantic problems. At the moment there are two switches, activated from upper-level templates as By color. The different usages of By need specific translations, and the usages now introduced by me to name the creator of a file use also a switch, the presence of parameter 1. As I have explained in the docu the template did not translate well in German - now it does, when the mc parameter is used. Yes, it is just a workaround, but at the moment I cannot see what's wrong with it? Of course, other users may find another solution. -- sarang사랑 13:13, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
JuTa’s syndrome: I had set in my preferencies "mark all edits minor by default" because almost all my edits are really minor; and when I am changing more, I often forget to untick that box. Sorry when that's irritating! I will try to look for it, but best would be when the system could recognize larger changes and set the switch automatically. -- sarang사랑 13:54, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You can’t do localization like this!

[edit]

One-word localization templates like this (or {{Of}}) are complete nonsense, that’s not how languages and translation work! You might as well try to create one-letter templates and suddenly have localization {{O}}{{F}} {{A}}{{L}}{{L}} {{W}}{{O}}{{R}}{{D}}{{S}}! You might want to read e.g. mw:Help:System_message#Avoid fragmented or "patchwork" messages. --Mormegil (talk) 09:09, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Leading space - what for?

[edit]

I like to use this template in file descriptions for attribution, etc. But what purpose does the (default) leading space serve? I find it irritating. I know I can turn it off with parameter "ns", but why is this the default behaviour? ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 12:45, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
