Copyvio or source

An optional source of the image can be specified.
If the source URL contains an equal sign, the argument can be passed as .

Well this is sadly a disclaimer saying not much helpful (it contradicts itself). NASA for example has a policy that every foreign copyright is noted along side the image (and this policy is noted in the disclaimer). Ask at Commons talk:Licensing what the others think about it. Informing the uploader

The templates Nsd and Nld have a nice line to copy and paste to the talk page of the uploader. I think that such a line would be nice and useful for this template, too. I got the idea from a tip by Pfctdayelise ("-- -- it is a good idea to tell the uploader what they have done wrong and ask them to read Commons:Licensing and ask questions at the Commons:Help desk."). Samulili 09:20, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree that would be nice. However, such notification should not be required for copyvio deletions. Certainly, those admins who take the time to do so should be provided with a copypasteable line to do so, but I'll fiercely fight against any attempts to make such notification mandatory :) —UED77 20:24, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
I think it's actually in your best interests to do so, if you catch it, UED77. Otherwise they will just keep uploading copyvios with no idea of what they are doing wrong == more work later on.
Then there's people who upload stuff and tag it Logo, and then leave it...! I'll never understand those people. Maybe they freak out and just leave it and assume it will be deleted. pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Most people that tag their images with "logo" or "fair use" have only one single edit at this very image. This indicates that they just uploaded the file (and directly entered there the image description) and even didn't look at the image page after upload ("our upload and forget problem"...). Arnomane 20:29, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Misuse of Copyvionote

For the love of Jimbo please don't spam users' talk pages with these warnings. :/ The aim is not to merely notify them, but to make sure they understand what they're doing wrong and why it's not acceptable. If you need to tag 10 images from one person as copyvio, then they don't need 10 copyvionote warnings. They need ONE strong, personal, last-chance explanation and warning, and anything after that they need to be blocked. pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Well said. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:23, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Keep the Consistency (Change the layout)

Dear Administrators,

Why don't you change a little bit the layout in order to keep the consistency with Speedy Request Speedydelete?

Please refer to

Followings are very smal things, though...

 • Deletion Guidelines : ALL languages don't have to be shown. User can click "Language Changer Bar" at the bottom.
 • Be more clearly: Upper Messages are for READERs and Lower Messages are for ADMINs without mixing up.
 • Explain the usage simply: The explanation should be OUTSIDE of the main box. The main Message Box is automatically shown on all tagged pages; Whom is it for? Without making READERs confused, Admins or People helping maintenance can come to check the Usage details here.

What do you think? --SantaClaus 08:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

For some reason when I enter the link [1] into the parameter field the template suddenly considers that parameter to be empty. The same thing happens if I write the link in plain text (i.e without using []). The link still diplays fine when writing it outside the template so there must be some part of the template code which stops it. /Lokal_Profil 10:28, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

MediaWiki templates support named parameters, which are assigned with the = character. Links that have the character thus assign a parameter that doesn't exist and can't be used by the template. A workaround for this is to write or (as noted at the top of this page :). --Para 10:52, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

This template may meet criteria for speedy deletion!

Every time I visited this template, which is not often, I was shocked by this message: "This template may meet criteria for speedy deletion." It only takes some time for the realization to hit me and I realize that this message is due to a consequential technical implementation of the template. So, dear Administrators who have modification permission, please fix this shocking bad implementation by replacing the following piece of code:

This namespace may meet the criteria for speedy deletion.

...with the following:

This <noinclude>file</noinclude><includeonly>namespace</includeonly> may meet the criteria for speedy deletion.

Thanks! Fleet Command (talk) 11:07, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

P.S. Actually, regardless of whatever namespace you put this template in, the template body text always reads: "This file is a copyright violation because it is copyrighted and not published under a free license. The file is subject to speedy deletion unless it is relicensed according to the Commons licensing policy."
As you can see, this template is only usable in file namespace. So, it is safe to replace the above code with:
This file may meet the criteria for speedy deletion.
Thanks.

✓ Done. I've finished the conversion to Autotranslate today after getting the full protection lifted. Most of that work had already been done by others, mainly User:The Evil IP address, User:DieBuche and a bunch of translators. It turns out we had two slightly different copies of the English text of this template: the text shown directly in this template before the change and the one in Template:Copyvio/en, which I changed a bit, partly by bringing stuff over from here and partly according to my own whims. My edit summaries should explain fairly well what I was doing, but if anyone thinks I've made a royal mess of things, please pipe up. LX (talk, contribs) 13:59, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Creating a category parameter

editprotected

This template adds categories to Category:Copyright violations. Can we make that cat optional? I created a subcat for Picasa copyvios but they shouldn't appear in the parent category. It may seem like it would complicate the process but a script will being treated this way so there won't be any hassle. To enable that function:

<includeonly>{}</includeonly><noinclude>

Replace with

<includeonly>{{#if:{no}||{}}}</includeonly><noinclude>

The parameter would be |cat=no|. ZooFari 05:06, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Why not just set category= to nothing? That's what it's there for. No need for a parser function. Rocket000 (talk) 12:52, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
And I think this is what you want anyway: <includeonly>{{#ifeq:{cat}|no||{}}}</includeonly><noinclude> Rocket000 (talk) 13:05, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out. ZooFari 17:19, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

The "appeal" section

Recently, Krinkle changed the appeal section, without any discussion as far as I can see, telling the person that disagrees with deletion to make a regular deletion request. That is not a logical procedure. It should be up to the tagger to make the DR, if that person persists that it is a copyright violation. I restore the wording in Template:Copyvio/en. See also Commons:Village pump#Proposal to prevent unnecessary aggravation. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 15:58, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

"Freedom of Panorama cases"

I used this template on a copyvio file and an admin reverted me just saying "not a copyvio". Later I was told that I was to use deletion review on "Freedom of Panorama cases". If there indeed is such a rule, it might be useful to mention that on this page or preferably on the template itself. Palosirkka (talk) 10:50, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

This is mentioned in our criteria for speedy deletion policy. The template does link (rather prominently and several times) to Commons:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion, which has a "see also" box that links to those criteria. I don't think it would be a good idea to add too much detailed information directly in the template itself, but perhaps it would be better if those links pointed directly to the criteria, as that is what the link texts suggest. LX (talk, contribs) 13:55, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointer. Palosirkka (talk) 18:50, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Parameter source

The parameters {} and {} did not show on the Dutch translation. I managed to fix parameter 1, but number 2 is still not shown. It works fine with but not for with Dutch as language preference.
I solved it by replacing parameter 2 by parameter source. Should be
I also changed this on other languages, but upon checking (again) it does not work either. Revert my changes if they were wrong. Try to correct it if possible. HenkvD (talk) 19:28, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

The localised templates do expect the source as unnamed parameter 2; this is how the main template passes the parameters. The template was working fine for the language specified in the user's preferences. I'm guessing you mean that the parameters were not rewritten in place when clicking the language links. For this, we need to use LayoutTemplateArgs. I've made the necessary changes to the /layout template and to /en and /sv. Other languages should also be updated so that they pass the parameters back to the layout template. LX (talk, contribs) 22:17, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. /en and /sv works fine. I canged /nl and this works fine too. I will chnage the others accordingly. HenkvD (talk) 10:00, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Different actions suggested in different languages?

When viewing tagged images for deletion, if there is the large "Please check the talk page before deleting where information pertaining copyright might have been added" then I go and view that data, so I have been accustomed to always check for a talk page objection. However it transpires that the German version is saying that the objection can go on the image or the talk page - unlike the English version which directs one to the talk page. Could we be consistent and have all objections on the talk page? I was informed of this problem at User_talk:Ronhjones#File:Fantasy_Fest_2006_Wet_T-Shirt_Contest_24_Whipped_cream_titties.jpg Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:01, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

__NOINDEX__

I suggest that the __NOINDEX__ code be added to this template, so images that are copyright violations will not appear on web search engines. This will help keep us from trouble. This change will not change the appearance of the template. It will just help keeping out copyright violations from being indexed by search engines. Thank you. Poké95 04:39, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Oppose. As far i know noindex is not real time. This won't help. --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:34, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Any way to avoid using this template without parameter?

I seen several Copyvio tags without source (URL) provided, and as the Documentation suggests, the reason parameter is mandatory. But, no warning when some user use just copyvio without the mandatory parameter.

 • Is possible to unprotect the Layout and Language templates in order to add a warning if used without parameters?
 • Otherwaise (or better), is possible to create a Abuse filter to refuse saving the page (even for autoconfirmed users) containing copyvio.

This should resolve a lot of false copyvio tagging. --Amitie 10g (talk) 01:25, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Reason as parameter

Editprotected
Would it be better, if ”This image is a copyright violation because it comes from:” were ”This image is a copyright violation because”, if you would indicate the parameter not as ”1” or ”Source”, but as ”Reason”. Because sometimes you don't write the source directly, you write the reason, e.g. Non-free screenshot. So, my idea would be that would create the following template:

This talk page may meet the criteria for speedy deletion.

This file is a copyright violation because it is copyrighted and not published under a free license.
The file is subject to speedy deletion unless it is relicensed according to the Commons licensing policy.

 • This file is a violation because Reason, not source
Usage: This template should only be used for obvious cases. For non-obvious cases, use Delete and follow the instructions.

If you have a URL that shows the image is a copyvio, use URL

Please notify the uploader by adding the follow to their talk page:
 -~~~~

For multiple images from one user, explaining copyrights might be more useful.

Appeal: If you disagree with its speedy deletion, please explain why on its talk page.
If this page does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, please remove this notice.

Adding the source/reason parameter from this template to Copyvionote (and the calls to it, for example in " -~~~~" above in the previous archived section and in the "Report copyright violation" tool) would better inform all readers of the uploader's user talk page, especially useful after the file has been deleted.   — Jeff G. ツ 13:46, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Source blacklisting

Edit request Please, copy this sandbox revision into Copyvio. It filters arguments (to both unnamed 1= and source= parameters) against some known rogue sites trying to sell public-domain images as allegedly copyrighted material; such links resulted in several wrongful deletions. Some level of protection for the Sane mind utility template is also necessary in case of a positive solution.

References:

Incnis Mrsi (talk) 21:59, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

The sandbox has stray wikicode at the top. Where exactly are these "blacklisted" sites going? Who has access to add or remove them? Who is going to patrol the category to make sure actually violating images are being taken care of? You may have thought there would be no opposition to this but a change of this degree would need community consensus to implement. On top of that, it would be far far easier to just use an abuse filter anyways. --Majora (talk) 20:49, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
@Majora: what would be better: making the tagging ineffective (but visible) and placing the page to a category possibly nobody cares of, or burying the attempt into Special:AbuseLog where virtually nobody will see it? As for “who has access to add or remove them”, the same problem can be posed for the possible abuse-filter solution too. It is not unique to the current proposal. Note that disruption inside Copyvio and its utility templates isn’t expected to pose Commons in danger, because only a handful pages bear the template in any specific instance of time. We may not presume it for any technique involving manipulation with abuse filters where a small mistake can make huge interference with ongoing edits. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 15:53, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Declined per Majora, this is not the right way. -- User: Perhelion 14:04, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Last edited time seems to be broken

In the last couple of days, I've noticed that the "Page last edited insert_time_here" portion always shows either "0 seconds ago" or "1 second ago", no matter when the page was last edited. For examples, see files in the copyright violations category.

I glanced at the code and didn't understand anything. But judging from the small amount of code, the template is transcluded from some other template. So I'm not really if this the correct place to report this issue, as other templates may also be affected. -- Veikk0.ma (talk) 06:00, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
