Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)

Dear MJSmit, The problem you experienced arises when someone, when s/he uploads an image, leaves the camera serial number without renaming the title to give a short description of the contents. Whenever someone else, using the simekingd of camera, uploads a new picture bearing the same serial number, what happens is that s/he overwrites the old image, which is thus deleted. If you are the original uploader, you can still overwrite again the deleted image, by uploading the old image again, keeping the same name. If you are not, you should contact and administrator, which I am not, to check whether the old image can be recovered. I strongly recommend to rename all images before uploading them, always. To be certain that no one else will unwillingly overwrite your uplaods, you may sign them with your name or with the date, so that it becomes extremely unlikely that this accident happens again. Rotte

The article about the river Rotte has a map, drawn by you, with the rivers and canals around Rotterdam In this map the river Rotte is slightly longer than in reality. Otherwise said: the last two linepieces are not called Rotte, but Stokviswater en Delftse Vaart.

If I knew how to change the map, I would. But I have some difficulty finding the right instructions. Could you help me?

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Gulf of Mexico places.png Was going to put this up for deletion, but figured this was a significantly better way of broaching the subject. Simple issue -- you placed a marker for New Orleans about 50-70 miles WNW of it's actual location at ~30 lat ~90 lon. If it were any other city, no one would have probably said anything, but we're doggone proud down here, even of where we are. Thanks for your attention in this. R means raccordo. See pag. 22: [2]. In Italy there are 31 autostrade with number from 1 to 33 (no A17 and no A2), there are 7 autostrade tangenziali (by-pass of big cities) with number from 50 to 57 (no A53 because is more properly a raccordo, a connection between two motorways), there is A53, A90 (aka GRA) and A91 and there are many others little bretelle or raccordi with the number of the main autostrada or with the number of the two autostrade linked [3] (bretelle e raccordi are connections between two autostrade or connections between motorways and important cities without autostrade). there are also 17 roads called raccordi autostradali with not only the A of autostrade but with also the R (of raccordo). the 17 raccordi autostradali (with RA) can be classified or as autostrada or as superstrada (expressway). File:ICEtracks.png in a newly released book

Hi! I just came across your picture File:ICEtracks.png in the newly released book "Der ICE" (ISBN 978-3-7654-7320-3, page 90). It is attributed with the term "Classical geographer, creative commons", but it seems quite obvious to me that this book violates the CC-terms by neglecting the right to make copies of it, hence violating the "same terms" rule of the CC licences. Thanks for letting me know. I'm mostly flattered the image was included, and will surely look it up. If they mention somewhere that the image was released as CC, then the ©-status of the rest of the book doesn't apply here; if they don't, then they're indeed making a mistake. However, as long as they don't come claiming here at Commons that they actually own the copyright, I don't think it's serious enough to harass the editor. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. If a free image of Jacobs at a younger age comes online, that could be put at the top of the article, and the 2004 picture as a whole could the feature somewhere further down in the article. There is some news about project (in French). i advice you to click on "la cart des grands projet" (the map of important projects) and you will see that a high speed line is planned between Le Mans and Rennes projet page. Thanks for keeping this map up-to-date. A few points for the next time you update it:

  • Le Mans - Rennes is planned to open in 2016, not 2014.
  • Nîmes - Montpellier has not yet begun construction (expected to start soon), so an opening date of 2013 is impossible. It will open sometime in the second half of this decade.
  • In my opinion, it would be helpful to visually distinguish between lines already under construction and planned lines. Perhaps you might retain the dotted lines for planned lines and use dashed lines for lines under construction.

I appreciate your work on this and will understand if you decide to wait for construction of Nîmes - Montpellier to start before updating the map again. 217.75.75.234 07:49, 25 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the revised dates, I'll add them in at some point. Also the suggestion to split the two types of not-there-yet are good. If I understand the news sources correctly, the Nîmes-Montpellier bypass is to start construction soon, but the Montpellier-Perpignan section is still only in the planning stage. Following recent decisions (July 2013) by the French government to delay many planned lines for lack of money, I am updating the relevant articles, starting with the summary list. Here are the updates that should be reflected on your map. If you have no time and are willing to send me the source file, I'm willing to update it myself. Allow me to add some geographical details on already-drawn lines:

  • en:LGV Méditerranée splits towards Montpellier slightly west of Avignon, not north of it
  • The Southern branch of en:LGV Rhin-Rhône is planned to be built further to the East, starting from the Western end point of the currently in-service Eastern branch. It would then join en:LGV Rhône-Alpes at the en:Lyon–Saint_Exupéry_Airport, east of Lyon. (The earlier path you drew joining en:LGV Sud-Est near Mâcon has been abandoned.)
  • A regular service operates from Paris to Basel via the en:LGV Rhin-Rhône; you could extend the thin black line from Mulhouse to Basel.
  • The planned line from Bordeaux to the Spanish border splits off from en:LGV Bordeaux-Toulouse south-east from Bordeaux, after a significant length of common section.
  • The arrow towards Italy from Mâcon does not match any TGV service I'm aware of (even on classical lines); I would suggest deleting it.
  • The map legend should differentiate between dashed under-construction lines and dotted planned lines.

Cool, looking forward to your update. To help position current projects, here is a good 2012 map from RFF with the latest planned line paths. The POCL line is drawn there with two variants, the Western path being the more likely, you can keep just this one to avoid cluttering your map. You will also see more hypothetical lines drawn as green dots, out of which only Toulouse-Narbonne is being officially studied now (see RFF list of new line projects). Let's keep them out. The service to Genève via Mâcon and Bourg-en-Bresse is correct, the Swiss and French decided to revive an old and picturesque single-track line, rather than build an expensive LGV in the mountains. Thanks for this great map! A couple updates needed when you have time: Bretagne-Pays de la Loire and Sud-Ouest are now open. Dear Classical geographer, This is the image I want to use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Deltawerken_na.png. Its for a article I want to submit to the Robotics and Automation Magazine (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/RecentIssue.jsp?punumber=100). The paper will be on dike inspection robotics and I find the image very nice to illustrate an important part of the Dutch water works. I am indeed. My software has difficulties creating proper SVGs; they always come out with errors. I could and will at some point switch to different software; until then, I upload new PNGs from time to time. I would like to use that as an illustration on http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aangepaste_dienstregeling, because in this case words can not say as much as a visualization of the effects. Hello. In your map the connection Erfurt-Kassel-Paderborn-Hamm is missing. Here go some ICE, which travel from Dresden via Erfurt-Kassel to Dusseldorf (ICE-T 1745/1746) and Munich via Würzburg-Kassel to Dortmund (ICE-W 1223/1224). Dear Classical geographer, I like your map of the Swedish railway system with the only comments that the Inland Line (still) offers scheduled services from Mora to Östersund, possibly the name "Marbäck" on the map (it is a village located somewhere else, no station). I just saw your new map File:Danmark maks. hastighed.png, and I think I would like to point out a couple of things:

  • Kolding is not a railway junction (at least not since 1968). Instead the junction is in the neighbour city Lunderskov. Similar the junction for the line to Tønder is in Bramming.
  • The line between Lunderskov and Padborg has single track between Vamdrup and Vojens as well as between Tinglev and Padborg. The former part is going to get double track in the coming years.
  • The lines from Vejle and Esbjerg to Struer shares the track between Holstebro and Struer.
  • The maximal speed between Struer and Thisted is only 75 km/h.
  • The maximal speed between Hillerød and Hundested is 100 km/h.
  • The line between Hillerød and Snekkersten at helsingør is missing (max speed 100 km/h). Also you have written Helsingborg instead of Helsingør. Helsingborg is on the other side of Øresund in Sweden.
  • The S-train line between Copenhagen and Høje Taastrup beside of the main line is also missing (max speed 120 km/h).
  • The line between Roskilde and Kalundborg has double track between Roskilde and Hvalsø as well as between Vipperød and Holbæk. The part between Hvalsø and Vipperød is going to get double track as well later this year.
  • Regarding marking of railway junctions: Hillerød, Roskilde, Skanderborg, Skjern and Holstebro would be some of the obvious. Randers is technical a railway junction as well, but the nearest part of the side line to Allingåbro is closed while the rest is a heritage railway.

Yes, it is a lot of things. But I have been working with Danish railway maps for years, so I know a lot of details. But I must also admit that a map with maximal speeds and the numbers of tracks was missing. Of course several things in and around Copenhagen are missing on the map, but that was only to be expected. But perhaps you could create a separate map for the Copenhagen area then? Hi Classical geographer. I noticed your map for the High-speed lines in Spain is very outdated. Last update is from July 2013. Since then there are many changes in the network with new operational high-speed lines. Moreover, the dates and the planned lines showed on the map need to be updated as well. The article en:AVE has been recently updated with lots of this information, you can see the current status there. Could you please update your file as well? I am doing svg with Inkscape. That works so far. Problematic are the fonts. Wikimedia sites only allow a limited number of open source fonts. The "Bitstream Vera" font family and the "Liberation" font family work for me so far although it doesn't look perfect. "Territorial waters" vs. "territorial sea"

Hi, thanks for your contributions. According to TIB-S from 14.11.2023, page 244:

Delstrækning Strækningshastighed (km/h)
Aarhus H - Hobro 180
Hobro - Aalborg 120

But the drawing shows the northern stretch as having speed 120 km/h, and the southern stretch to have speed 160 km/h. What explains this discrepancy?
