Sort key

[edit]

@Joshbaumgartner: Hi josh, can you please add an parameter for the sortkey!? Look e.g. here: Category:Sportspeople sitting: it is sorted under Category:Sportspeople by posture with sortkey "!". "sitting" as sortkey would be nicer. Thx already! --W like wiki good to know 21:07, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@W like wiki That is correct, it should be 'sitting'. The '!' indicates that for some reason the sortkey is not getting correctly passed along somewhere. I fixed the posture categorization template so it doesn't have this error. Josh (talk) 03:25, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: Great! Thank you! --W like wiki good to know 15:25, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnotes

[edit]

@Sbb1413: Why did you change the placement of the hatnotes? They should display after the sidebar, not before. The sidebar should appear in the exact upper right corner of the page, not be pushed down by notes first. Can you please restore this pending discussion of this change? Thanks! Josh (talk) 13:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Joshbaumgartner I want to add the {{Personality rights}} template in all people categories to make users aware about personality rights. It is already used in some people categories. Unfortunately, this template does not get squeezed when I implement it at {{Category navigation/people/hatnote}}. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 14:00, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413 Got it. I don't think we should use that template on a category. It should be on the file page. Even if it should be true of all contents of the category, we cannot control that. I get the intent of wanting to warn users about personality rights, but do you think we should add such a header to all categories for images of people? That is a lot of pages, so I think it is certainly worth it to develop a header specific for our purposes (that is also better formatted in the process)--namely one designed for category use as opposed to a repurposed file tag. Josh (talk) 14:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner Yes, it is a good idea to develop a header specifically for people categories. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 14:40, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413 Let's work that up a sandbox, and implement it once we have it all fleshed out the way we want it. I think its a decent idea. I also want to include in there language to cover the definition of the specific term being used (boys, women, etc.) per our other discussion. Let's build this up and work through the kinks first before we roll it out live on categories. Josh (talk) 14:49, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner Let's work together to implement these. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 15:21, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413 See Armpits of male humans for an example of how your implementation really causes issues. Remember that this template is intended to be below {{Wikidata infobox}} when present. On this page, you can see how the personality rights template ends up wedged between the two with massive white space and the real content being shoved far down the page. I doubt this is how you intended it to look! Josh (talk) 15:01, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner I understand that {{Personality rights}} as a category header is a terrible idea, since it does not squeeze in presence of a navbox at the right. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 15:19, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413 Well I do see some other categories out there which have used it probably with the same idea in mind, so no, not a terrible idea, just it doesn't quite work in this application. It's okay, we'll design a note that should be a better fit. Josh (talk) 15:36, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner I'm designing one at {{Personality rights (category header)}}. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 15:37, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is specific to use with the category navigation templates, I've continued in that theme. I made a starter template at {{Category navigation/people/hatnote/general}}. We can make specific ones for the breakout you have already set up a switch for. Josh (talk) 15:48, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I like the formatting in yours a bit better, so I've updated the general one. Josh (talk) 15:51, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The text you have used is no longer used in {{Personality rights}}. I've used the current text at {{Personality rights (category header)}}. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 15:51, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413 I'm going to take a pause to think over some different ideas on implementation. In some cases we are going to have two or three different hatnotes and I'd like to group them in one box listing key policies relevant to a given category, so maybe rework how this is fundamentally structured. It may even make sense to use a collapse so that users are alerted that there are relevant policies to be aware of and can expand to see them, but users are not all confronted with a wall of policy text on every category. Josh (talk) 16:59, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: I'll also look for similar ideas and test them in sandbox subpages. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:19, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
