PD-US-no notice advertisement no longer accepted by commons upload wizard

[edit]

Previously I have used the wizard numerous times to upload old advertisements with the "specific public domain tag" of PD-US-no notice advertisement (curly brackets included in original) used as the justification, but as of today this no longer appears to be accepted, although as far as I can tell this should still be valid. - Thomas H. White (talk) 22:35, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Thomas H. White: The main menu of the Upload Wizard may offer a selection of templates, probably those most likely to be widely used, but maybe not lesser-used templates. If "PD-US-no notice advertisement" was there but was removed, that is probably for such a reason of practicality, not because it is not accepted. The template still exist and it does not seem disputed, so you can use it. You can add it to the description pages, or you can use another upload form, or there might be a way to insert it even with the Upload Wizard (I don't know, I don't use it). Please do not forget to categorize your files. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:26, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I can also report that {{PD-US-record-expired}} is not working in Upload Wizard. That should be fixed (as I do plan to upload newly public domain 1924 sound recordings). Abzeronow (talk) 02:29, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't use the Upload Wizard, but is there no means to add a specific tag of your choosing that isn't in their list? - Jmabel ! talk 03:39, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All I know is that it gave me an error message when I tried to use PD-US-record-expired and it wouldn't go to the next screen until I got rid of that and used PD-US-expired from the list. It's probably a bug. Abzeronow (talk) 04:02, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Upload Wizard freezes

[edit]

I've previously been able to use the Upload Wizard without issues. Today, I tried to upload a huge file (well above 100 MB which I think is the limit for the wizard). Now any time I try, the Wizard freezes on the "Release rights" step after I click "Next". It doesn't matter what the file is. I can still upload without issue using the older method. Rjjiii (talk) 18:15, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rjjiii: is it possible you are running afoul of the current bug described at phab:T383415, or are you using one of their default licenses? If it's not that, any further description of exactly what you are doing and what happens would be more useful.
Also, Upload Wizard issues are often better addressed at Commons:Upload Wizard feedback than on the general help page. - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh that is likely it. I have used the license {{PD-old-auto-expired}} for File:Skálholt map 1690 copy (cropped).png and {{PD-US-no notice}} for File:Passaic, New Jersey, Flying Saucer.png, and ran into issues for both where the browser froze. I didn't see any kind of error message but have uBlock on Firefox which will sometimes be overly aggresive in blocking popups and warnings. I just did an upload where I was able to select rather than type a license and had no issues. Thank you for the link and advice, Rjjiii (talk) 20:31, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wizard hangs when entering custom license

[edit]

I'm uploading an image with a CC Attribution Generic 2.0 license, but if I put that in the "Enter a different license" box the page hangs. There are no error messages. It does not do this with other licenses on the same photo with the same information. What's the deal? Gamingcanary (talk) 02:41, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

PD-Somalia

[edit]

The upload wizard, at the section "1. Please choose why this work is free to share. Providing incorrect information may result in the deletion of your media," {{PD-Somalia}} is no longer available. I think that this template was OK before, but is it not a sufficient license now? I am thinking of uploading a photo that appeared in a recent Somali newspaper. Please see above in Commons:Help desk#PD-US-no notice advertisement no longer accepted by commons upload wizard Abzeronow (talk) 01:17, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Freetrashbox: feel free to comment at phab:T383415, but the bug seems to apply to every license they don't explicitly support. - Jmabel ! talk 02:34, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I was unable to get the US copyright tag to work this morning. I put the tag {{PD-USGov}} into the licence field - which accepted it, and gave a decent preview - but when I tried to publish the files, the system hung - apparently trying to process the copyright field. @Dori040775: There are many different competitions. But given the photo you uploaded, you are probably asking about "Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Malta". The 10 finalists of Wiki Loves Monuments for each country, including for Malta, are on the page Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 winners#Malta. The winners do not seem to be announced on that page yet. Uploading a PDF that is public domain

[edit]

I have a PDF file that is considered public domain, however for some reason, as stated in an automated message, it is no longer allowed for publication due to numerous copyright violations. Is there another way to upload PDFs that are in the public domain without encountering that automated message? Tentsurushan (talk) 13:39, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tentsurushan: Hi, and welcome. I regret to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281. Please read Mediawiki:Abusefilter-disallowed-pdf-new-user-upload again. You may upload the image(s) here and make a draft page with transcribed wikitext on another project, if in scope. How do you know that they are in the public domain?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:57, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I got the PDF from here, where it was tagged as among those included in the public domain. I am planning to make a source on Wikisource using this work I have. Unfortunately I cant make the Index page and proofread it since PDFs are no longer allowed to be uploaded on Commons. Tentsurushan (talk) 13:05, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G. and Tentsurushan: If it came from HathiTrust, it *should* be public domain. I didn't see any publication details particular to that copy, however. The closest I saw was a note stating it was a reprinting of something originally published in 1854, with the country of origin unclear. Also, why would you upload this to Commons? This appears to be more suitable to Wikisource. Is there something going on with that project I don't know about? RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 15:11, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Scans are generally uploaded to Commons so that contributors can transcribe the text on Wikisource. Only scans that are in the public domain in the United States, but not in their country of origin should be uploaded to Wikisource instead. Lovelano (talk) 22:13, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of vintage toys

[edit]

I am editing the Wikipedia article en:Brickplayer. This is a British construction toy that was produced from 1938 to the mid-60s by J. W. Spear and Sons. I have personally-taken photos of the Brickplayer kits, which are now anything from 60 to 80+ years old. Can I upload these to the Commons, or might this be a copyright violation? TonyOHagan (talk) 15:04, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TonyOHagan: Are there copyright notices on any of the packaging?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:06, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No! The box says "British and Foreign Patents", but there are no copyright statements or symbols and no mention of a registered trademark. TonyOHagan (talk) 18:53, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright notice probably wouldn't actually be relevant, because with the URAA restoration of UK copyrights in the U.S., unless they were "simultaneously" (within 30 days) published in the U.S., anything copyrightable from the UK in that era is still copyrighted in the U.S. (unless somehow it was already out of copyright in the UK in 1996), and will be until 95 years from initial publication. So (1) take advantage of en-wiki's allowance for non-free content to upload your best photo there (not involving Commons) and (2) if you have photos where you can firmly date the copyrighted elements, we can work something out for you to upload them here on Commons and then immediately delete them and note them to be undeleted at an appropriate date. For example, something with only a 1938 copyright could end up in Category:Undelete in 2034. - Jmabel ! talk 19:28, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is a quagmire. I cannot see what harm could possibly arise from including the Brickplayer logo and images of Brickplayer kit boxes and content. They would be helpful to readers of the Wikipedia page and make it more attractive, and if there still is a copyright holder they could hardly give a damn about a toy that has been defunct for 60 yeaers and could never be marketed to a modern consumer. But unfortunately the intricacies of Wikimedia requirements are labyrinthine. I have looked at the free-use guidance, and simply cannot be bothered to wade through all that stuff. So the page will not have images, full stop. But seriously, apologies for the rant and thanks for your help. I don't mean to sound ungrateful! TonyOHagan (talk) 19:54, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Notable person, personal permission

[edit]
Instagram users can do it this way, then anyone can upload it on Commons with a link to that post as a source.

Hello, if I had permission from a notable person in form of a Instagram DM, could I upload a selfie they took? I want to upload a picture for a small actor who has a Wikipedia page, they have given me permission. Could I upload this? Or do I need more “evidence” thanks CommunistCatGirl (talk) 02:36, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@CommunistCatGirl: not from just a DM, or anyone could claim they had permission. We'd need at least a public-facing post (which you can link from the "permissions" field of the {{Information}} template, and that post needs to grant a specific license (e.g. CC-BY 4.0). Tag the file page with {{LicenseReview}} so an admin can verify the permission. It would be even better if they would go through the COM:VRT process, but what I just mentioned should be enough. - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category for Elite Hotels

[edit]

The category Category:Elite Hotels includes subcategories for "Elite Hotels of Sweden" and "Elite Hotels in China". This gives the impression that the hotel chain Elite Hotels has hotels in Sweden and Hotels. Well, there is a Swedish hotel chain called Elite Hotels, and when I checked their website, they didn't show any hotels in China, or any outside Sweden for that matter. This makes me wonder why the categories for China and Sweden are under the same category at all. Is the only reason that the hotels have the word "Elite" in their name? Should the categories be reorganised to avoid confusion? JIP (talk) 12:59, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: yes. And you might start by communicating with the person who created the category (if they are still around) to work out their intent. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: According to Google, the question is: "I would like to update the old photo on TAVEERNELAAN 5 BOSCH EN DUIN to the current photo. How do I do that?" I don't know how much you trust Google. Krok6kola (talk) 01:01, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not a lot, in this case. What does it mean update a photo to another photo? Overwrite it? That is rarely the right thing to do with any photo. And what photo (I'd guess File:Bosch en Duin Taveernelaan 5.jpg, but not confidently). If they have a different, more recent photo of this building, of course they can upload it, but not overwrite someone else's photo. - Jmabel ! talk 04:21, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can somebody do it for me? This is mij e mail: [EMAIL ADDRESS SUPPRESSED] I can sent you the new picture of mij house.... Theoderijkwalburgis (talk) 08:16, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(email address suppressed, should not be posted this publicly; normally I would also hide all revisions that show it, but I think there have been far too many of that to be practicable.)
@Theoderijkwalburgis: no, basically, no one can do it for you because you have to go through the process of (1) asserting that you, not someone else, took the photo and (2) granting a specific free license. You could imaginably do that through the COM:VRT process instead of doing the upload yourself, but given that you already have an account here, that would almost certainly be more cumbersome. Use the Upload Wizard, it guides you through the process pretty well, especially for uploading a single photo that you took yourself (certainly a simple case). - Jmabel ! talk 22:27, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking to use a healthcare organization's logo. I've tried to research the public domain rights that I've seen applicable on other pages and how to upload the logo, but am not 100% sure on the process and want to make sure I'm not violating any rules. Thanks. Alpacaaviator (talk) 17:44, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is probably copyrighted and hence does not belong on Commons unless there is a free license available, which is very unlikely. When you say you are "looking to use" it, do you mean for an article about the organization in the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), or something else? If you mean an article about the organization in en-wiki, I recommend doing this entirely on en-wiki and leave Commons out of it. When you upload the image there, use en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo.
If "looking to use" meant something else, you will need to clarify. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It would be for the Penn Highlands Healthcare page on en-wiki. On other organizations they used TM logos. Alpacaaviator (talk) 16:03, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I figured it out and found the appropriate guidelines for pdtext and trademark. I didn't realize I could upload directly on en-wiki but it's taken care of now. Thanks. Alpacaaviator (talk) 20:41, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If I used a diagram with a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license and modified it for my classroom and would like to share it back to Wikimedia commons & give credit to the original author, how do I do that? I used this picture: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Urinary_system_-_Nephron_3_--_Smart-Servier.png LovelessBeth (talk) 21:54, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@LovelessBeth The credit should be placed in the source section of your image. You could say something like "Modified work from File:Urinary system - Nephron 3 -- Smart-Servier.png by Laboratoires Servier". Also don't forget to put your own name as the author and use {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} as the license. You can use this image as a reference File:Coronary vessels, with annotated arteries.svg to see how they have done it. Hope this helps. Tvpuppy (talk) 02:27, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Cropping out the ® or ™ symbols from logos?

[edit]

Frequently, I find myself annoyed by especially prominent uses of the (reg'd)trademark symbols, for instance File:Colt logo.svg. Is it best to edit out the symbols when possible (or does this run into trademark law shenanigans)? Perhaps this is a better question for MCQ. Thanks. Photo of military robot rover

[edit]

Hi I want to know if military robot rovers are copyrightable or not? I want to upload this image here: [2] I am asking because I am not sure if it counts as a vehicle or not, but I saw that there are plenty of other military/bomb squad rovers available in Commons. Thanks for the help. Tvpuppy (talk) 01:55, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tvpuppy: the rover itself is not, that's just a camouflage pattern painted on it. But the photograph is copyrighted unless there is proof of free license: Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Taiwan. MKFI (talk) 07:39, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipediaの作成時の行の幅の変更

Wikipediaの下書きの作成時に、行の幅を広く作ってしまったようで、もっと行間を狭くするにはどうすればいいのでしょうか? 240F:74:F64E:1:48B8:67A:F043:7AA3 14:12, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(after reading via Google translate) I'm very confused by this. (1) if this is a question about the Japanese-language Wikipedia, it would be better to ask on the Japanese-language Wikipedia: . (2) Google translate says part of this is "When creating a Wikipedia draft, it seems like I made the line width too wide." I can't think of anything in a Wikipedia article that would be about "line width" but perhaps there is something in the Japanese-language Wikipedia that I'm unaware of. Again, ask there, not here. - Jmabel ! talk 22:32, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Upload file's name extension?

I've drafted a file entirely in wikitext for upload as an complete Wikipedia article. (It's correct enough that Pandoc translates it into the HTML that I want to see). The original file has extension ".txt", which Wikipedia's "Upload" rejects. What substitute extension should I use? PeterMcKenzieArmstrong (talk) 19:25, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Images from InciWeb

[edit]

Wondering if images from [3]https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/ would be considered public domain? I am trying to update some wildfire pages. Example, could this image [4]https://inciweb-prod-media-bucket.s3.us-gov-west-1.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/styles/max_2600x2600/public/2024-10/IMG_0716c.jpg?VersionId=Y5YQZl78Yb1Q7_.7DYO1Lry_91sFbcYw&itok=UbMW3O0b from the official page, [5]https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-photos-gallery/orumf-tiger-creek-fire?page=3 fall under free use? The page is run by NWCG which is a federal organization I believe. The news pulls and uses InciWeb images all the time and credits "InciWeb". But can I upload those images to commons to use in various pages? TacitMoose (talk) 20:44, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you can demonstrate that a particular image was taken by a federal employee as part of their job (or, similarly an employee of some state or other government that puts all of their content into the public domain, or free-licenses it), the answer is going to be "no". When people allow the federal government to use photos they took, they don't waive their copyrights by doing that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:37, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Search files whose Category is not in a particular supercategory

I'm looking for a way to find files (images) whose category is not a subpage of a particular parent category, ideally even 2-3 levels up. deepcat does not seem to allow negations and incategory only looks for the lowest level. Background transparency/cropping

[edit]

Is there a place where one can request that someone with the relevant permissions / graphic editing package make backgrounds transparent and/or crops images correctly? I regularly come across images hosted on commons (and used on English Wikipedia) that need one or both (e.g. File:Pakistan General election 1985.png), but do not have permissions to upload edited versions nor the ability to crop svgs. If there isn't, could one be created? I suspect it might have a regular stream of requests. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 00:25, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting clarification on contradictory policies

COM:LANG says "Gallery names should generally be in the local language. See Commons:Galleries for the exact policy." This links to COM:GAL, which states "Unlike naming categories, where English is almost always used, galleries should be named in the language most associated with the subject." In instances where the local language is different from the language most commonly associated with the subject, which one should be used? I'm asking to see if gallery pages could be used to create a space for minority languages on Commons, as existing policy on category naming conventions leaves little room for those ever being used there. Crop error

[edit]

I'm trying to crop an image - File:Ione Belarra en el Consejo de Coordinación de Podemos.jpg - however, when I try to do so it takes me to a page saying "What to crop?" "Enter the URL or filename for an image you would like to crop." I enter the URL or file name and all it does it tell that the file exists but doesn't allow me to crop it. How do I crop this image? Helper201 (talk) 18:37, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Helper201: I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appear on the left panel of the image in question. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image with a different name, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 18:51, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ww2censor: I am using that CropTool, it takes me to the page I mentioned when I try to use it on this specific image. Other images it works fine. Helper201 (talk) 18:53, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Convenience internal link: File:Ione Belarra en el Consejo de Coordinación de Podemos.jpg.

You can always download the highest-resolution version of the photo, crop it on your own computer (I personally use GIMP, but any tool capable of cropping will do), and re-upload. If there are reasons you can't do that, please describe the crop you want, and I'll do it for you. - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The above is a visual novel called Class of '09 and I am working on the draft page. I was going to upload the logo but I am not sure what copyright is falls under. Granted I am still new to all this. Blitzite2 (talk) 12:36, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Blitzite2: Are we talking the "Steam" logo with the thing like a rod drive, or something else? If it's that one, it's pretty close to the line for whether it is copyrightable. (If it's copyrightable, then it is certainly copyrighted.). I'd suggest you take that question (with the two links, yours & mine) to Commons:Village pump/Copyright to ask about the U.S. threshold of originality as it applies to that.
If you mean the "Class of '09" thing on what looks like lined paper at a 45° angle, that is certainly below the threshold, and can be uploaded with {{Textlogo}} + {{Trademarked}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:02, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I mean the Class of 09 thing. I was going to upload it straight from the game's files. How do I upload it with the templates? Blitzite2 (talk) 16:14, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Blitzite2: Not sure I understand what you mean by "upload it with the templates." How is this different from putting any template on any other file page? - Jmabel ! talk 17:36, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Look I'm sorry for being confusing. How do I get this on the page? How do I upload the file? Just please bear with me. Blitzite2 (talk) 21:06, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Blitzite2: You upload with whatever upload tool you prefer. The most common for beginners is Commons:UploadWizard. I personally don't use it, so I can't guide you through it, but it's a wizard so it kind of guides you through itself. If they don't offer an option that amounts to "too simple for copyright" you'll have to use the option that lets you specify a license tag, and use {{Textlogo}}. After uploading you can edit the file page to add {{Trademarked}}.
The "how do I upload" question had me realize you are even more new at this than I thought. I see you have one prior upload, File:MAXCVRDE.png. I see you describe this as your "own work". Just to make sure: are you saying you are the illustrator who drew this? I see uploads considerably earlier than your upload to Commons (e.g. at https://www.thegamer.com/max-caulfields-return-to-life-is-strange-is-just-what-we-need/ which do not indicate the free license you say you are offering here and do not credit you as the author.
  • If that is your own work, you need to go through the COM:VRT process, or it will be deleted.
  • If that is not your own work, the actual copyright-holder needs to go through the COM:VRT process, or it will be deleted.
Jmabel ! talk 01:58, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question about CC2 flickr image

[edit]

I was looking for a public domain image for journalist Sam Hosseini, whose article does not currently have an image. I came across this image on Flickr 1. It's licensed under cc-by-2.0, but Hosseini appears to be facing away from the camera. Additionally, as we cannot see his face, the only evidence that it actually is Hosseini is the image description. Is this something that would be uploadable to commons as an image of Hosseini? Obviously would prefer a better image if possible, but I'm curious what the policy would be in this case. Wasianpower (talk) 01:06, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Wasianpower Per "NonCommercial" you can't upload it on Commons, more at Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. As a Wikipedian, I don't think that pic would improve the article if you could.
That said, is he the guy in green at 0:27 in File:Sam Husseini Questions Saudi Prince Turki about Legitimacy of Saudi Regime.webm? If so, you can use a screenshot from that video, since it has an acceptable license. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:14, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm trying to find a better image of him, I don't think I would upload it even if I could but I was curious about the situation of whether we can trust flickr metadata to describe its contents. What is the deal with Whitby Abbey - Project Gutenberg eText 16785.jpg

[edit]

It is a simple static image (here) but it wants to be viewed in a media player. Which doesn't work, when linked to (in an English Wikipedia article does not show on the image, but rather just a link to the Commons page, which even if I did want to send the reader there (I don't) clicking on "Show in media viewer" just throws an error message.

But as far as I can tell the part that causes the image to not be displayed but rather the invitation to open a media views is not in the page source where I can access it. It is somehow built into the page I guess. So I can't find it and fix it.

The weird thing is, the page is used all over many different Wikipedias, but it doesn't work in them either. So the problem is not editor error in the Wikipedia so it not on our end. The last effective edit here was in 2023 so its not a recent change to the Commons page. So it doesn't seem to be on your end. But is is used in many Wikipedias and if no one has complained yet whatever is causing this must have happened very recently. So it must be a recent change to the Wiki display software. But it seems unlikely that the devs would go live with code that breaks things.

Anybody know what is going on here? Herostratus (talk) 08:32, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Herostratus: All of the things that you suggest here seem to work fine in my browser (Firefox 128.6.0esr (64-bit) under Debian 12), both when logged in and in a private window. The image appears correctly in the Wikipedia article and the Media Viewer displays it correctly (both on Wikipedia and on Commons). So what you're seeing is not universal. You might want to try making your environment more vanilla (e.g. by logging out or using an incognito or private window, alternatively using a different browser either logged-in or not) to see if that allows you to narrow down the problem. --bjh21 (talk) 13:13, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. OK thanks. Odd, never had this problem before. Haven't changed anything on my end that I know of, ofc occasionally these things will go off by themselves. So then... something weird on my end personally is putting in a "show in media player" button rather than just displaying the image for just this particular image (at least, all others seem to work OK). There must be something special about this particular image. There's no setting for "mess up this one particular image File:Whitby Abbey - Project Gutenberg eText 16785.jpg" or "mess up a few images at random". It's a puzzler and no mistake. I have tried to change the coordinates for File:Gateway on Elland Footpath 73-3, Stainland - geograph.org.uk - 7200103.jpg without success. Editing the structured data entry did not work (unless I have missed something). I could enter the new coordinates, but the publishing button did nothing. Adding a second set of coordinates and deleting the first one did not work. The locator tool did not work, either - what am I doing wrong?

For the record, the new coordinates should be 53°39'60"N 1°53'27"W for both camera and object location.

I should greatly appreciate a link to the correct procedure. --18:30, 18 January 2025 (UTC) Schlosser67 (talk) 18:30, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Schlosser67: That used to be a problem reported several times months ago, but not recently. I thought it had been fixed. I don't know more about it, but it's probably not just you. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:29, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Asclepias - I've tried again on a different computer with a newer browser version (Firefox 134 instead of 128), and surprisingly, it worked this time. Maybe it is a browser issue? But IIRC the old version did support the feature as well. --Schlosser67 (talk) 06:48, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Schlosser67: Have you got the location updated on Geograph? Because while I think I haven't got around to it yet, I will at some point update the Geograph Update Bot to propagate location changes to these newer GeographBot uploads, at which point it'll get fixed automatically. I appreciate that this doesn't actually answer your question. --bjh21 (talk) 21:45, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@bjh21 - yes, geograph.org.uk has the new coordinates. --Schlosser67 (talk) 06:34, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do I contact a community member/see if I can contact a community member

[edit]

I am a researcher looking for certain data points for work I am trying to do. A user created a diagram from data I can mostly access off of a public website, but has two sets of datapoints I cannot access due to the publication they used for the work not being accessible online. I really want these datapoints and was wondering if the creater of the graph would be able to give them to me, since I cannot access the original citation. How do I find the pages of people who wrote wiki pages or created figures for those pages and see if they can be contacted? I was told there was public pages that had that information and I don't know how to find that. Aansbro (talk) 21:38, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aansbro You can look for the sources or uploader, under the "Summary" and "File history" sections respectively. Once you find the username of the person you wish to contact, you can go to their "talk" page, at "User talk:[their username]". If they have email enabled, you can also click the "email this user" link on their talk page. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 22:00, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Abuse

[edit]

How can I prevent a person who is not logged in from writing on my talk page? I know who the person is, and he has an account here but doesn't use it. He was abusing me both publicly and privately on iNaturalist for years until his accounts were deleted, but now he's still at it on this platform. —  Junglenut | talk  00:31, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I can protect your page so only autoconfirmed users can edit on it. Abzeronow (talk) 00:34, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That would be good, thank you. —  Junglenut | talk  00:44, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Compliance of the 1953 Newspaper Clip

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to appeal the deletion of the file I uploaded, which is a scanned excerpt from The Straits Times, originally published in 1953. I believe this file complies with copyright law in Singapore and meets the requirements for inclusion on Wikimedia Commons. Below is my explanation:

1. Copyright Duration in Singapore According to the Singapore Copyright Act, the copyright for published works lasts for: 70 years after the death of the author for individual works, or 70 years from the first publication for anonymous or corporate works, such as newspapers.

The article in question was published in 1953, and as of the year 2025, it has been 72 years since its first publication. This exceeds the 70-year copyright term for such works, making it part of the public domain under Singapore copyright law.

2. Eligibility for Wikimedia Commons Wikimedia Commons accepts materials that are in the public domain or freely licensed. Since the copyright protection period for this newspaper clip has expired, it is no longer subject to copyright restrictions and qualifies as public domain content.

3. Purpose of the Upload The uploaded file was intended to contribute to educational and historical resources, highlighting a significant event in 1953. It serves as a valuable historical document and is not being used for commercial purposes.

4. Precedents and Clarification Similar materials from historical newspapers have been uploaded and retained on Wikimedia Commons. I kindly request a review of this file under the same standards. Request for Review I hope this explanation clarifies the copyright status of the file. If further documentation or references are required, I am more than willing to provide them. Please let me know if there are additional steps I can take to resolve this matter.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Baginda 480 (talk) 11:57, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Baginda 480: The Singapore status template for this work seems to be "PD-SG-unknownauthor", not "PD-SG-edition". Please see the page Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Singapore for the difference. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:31, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you very much Baginda 480 (talk) 15:09, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's the cautious approach, although it might also be tempting to consider that item as uncreative and uncopyrightable. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:50, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
🙏🙏Okay, that’s okay, you are welcome to review every photo I upload. Baginda 480 (talk) 16:54, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Broken .png renderings of .svg file

[edit]

Display of "File:Pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide.svg" (Link: File:Pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide.svg ) is not working correctly (here and on en.WP).

The details page doesn't show any form of the graphic, just a broken-image icon. Using the [|"Original file" link] works (if your browser supports svg display). Clicking on an "Other resolutions" link fails with a "Unauthorized This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document you requested." message. Clicking on "Open in Media View" gives a "technical issue" (in graphic form). This was happening 10 or more hours ago too. Please fix. -- R. S. Shaw (talk) 20:53, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is an issue with the file server backend storing the thumbnails. It's not something that can be fixed on Commons but should probably get fixed as the week starts. Dylsss (talk) 02:16, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

José Bernardino de Portugal e Castro.jpg - Misnomer and wrong description

[edit]

File José Bernardino de Portugal e Castro.jpg actually refers to an image of Estêvão Ribeiro de Resende, brazilian marquês de Valença, and not any portuguese marquês de Valença, including José Bernardino. See https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Est%C3%AAv%C3%A3o_Ribeiro_de_Resende, and notice the brazilian Imperial Ordem do Cruzeiro on his chest in the image. Issue noticed by @Gameiro in this edit. RustyRapier (talk) 17:20, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It can be seen in the history of the page that this correction was already made in 2021 but it was undone in 2024 by Hehua. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:48, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@RustyRapier: The file is now back to its previous filename: File:Estêvão Ribeiro de Rezende.jpg. (It was written "Rezende" in the original publication by the author in 1861 [7].) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:43, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Angrense It was on your request, could you kindly see if there's anything else to be done in adjacent edits of the time? RustyRapier (talk) 15:51, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can evaluate, the situation is correct. The portrait corresponds to the Brazilian Valença, not the Portuguese. Angrense (talk) 18:25, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kunstmuseum Basel images in Public Domain

[edit]

Several images are available from the Kunstmuseum Basel for download in the public domain. Can I download these images and upload them to wikimedia commons? For example:

https://sammlungonline.kunstmuseumbasel.ch/eMP/eMuseumPlus?id=691

The rights for this work also say: Image data in public domain - Kunstmuseum Basel

If a work is in the public domain, there will be a link to download the image. These images are not covered by copyright and may be used without special permission. Mambos1through4 (talk) 23:15, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mambos1through4: Image data in the public domain does not mean the image is in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can't upload multiple files, coordinates not adding

[edit]

Hello,

In the past few days, Wikimedia has stopped auto-adding the coordinates from the files I've uploaded, and if I attempt to upload multiple files at once, it only shows me the first file I attempted to upload once I arrive at the "Describe" screen. If I attempt to submit, it then won't let me. I've tried switching browsers, but the problem persists. I imagine these two problems are related. Packer1028 (talk) 03:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How to submit images to the public domain ?

[edit]

I am an artist and have a number of images which I would like to submit to the public domain. They are my intellectual property and I am the sole copyright holder. I am unclear on how to relinquish all my rights to the images and pass them into the public domain. I could use a detailed explanation of how to do so. 66.41.201.17 05:33, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In some countries, some rights are inalienable. (For example, in France, you cannot waive the right to be acknowledged as an author; at most, you can fail to enforce it.)
The closest you can come to placing your own work universally in the public domain is to grant a {{CC-zero}} license. - Jmabel ! talk 06:54, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aroseglinks: You are asking this on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Commons does not have biographical articles. Perhaps you meant to ask this on Wikipedia in some language (most likely English, since you are writing in English), but nothing here suggests to me the level of notability that would be required for a Wikipedia article.
Further: I notice that your account name is the same as one of the companies he is involved with. Per Commons:Username policy, use of the names of organizations is allowed on Commons only if you verify your account, proving that you are or represent the respective organization. Please see Commons:Username policy for how to do that and for other relevant considerations. And yet further: you may also want to read en:Wikipedia:Username policy. If you plan to edit the English-language Wikipedia under this account, you must get a different account name, as explained there; specifically, see en:Wikipedia:Username policy#Promotional usernames. Also see en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure, because it looks likely that you are likely to get yourself in trouble on that basis. - Jmabel ! talk 07:07, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
