[edit]

Hello, I uploaded a few images of the logo of a political party. The images are explicitly released in the public domain, but I emailed the undersigned authorisation of the images' original author anyway. The message was sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org.

I did not receive any answer and the files were removed by a bot.

What did I do wrong? Thank you very much. Mv (talk) 14:11, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mv: Hi, and welcome. What was the filename?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:18, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Mv, the files were deleted because they did not have any licence explicitly stated in the licensing section. Although it was mentioned in the source that the files are CC BY SA 4.0, the bot missed it. You may request undeletion at COM:UDEL if the files are indeed CC BY SA 4.0 or in public domain. Otherwise, proceed with the COM:VRT. When did you send the mail? Do you have the ticket number? Ratekreel (talk) 20:45, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ratekreel: Evidently, no ticket number was revealed because the user did not receive any answer.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 04:11, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Jeff G. & @Ratekreel, thanks for your help. Sorry for my moronic questions, I've been using Wikipedia since a very long time (I even got a 2-letter username!) but uploading files has always been my Achilles's heel, and apparently it turned much more difficult recently. :-)
The file was called Logo of PCR (Italy, 2024).svg (+ 2 other files).
I sent the email on January 16th @ 19:21 (Rome time). I received no answer and therefore, as Jeff said, I got no ticket number.
I have both the written and undersigned authorisation of the images' author, and in any case the images are published on a website that's declared as completely CC-BY-SA-4.0 in the site footer.
As I understood it, I should proceed with Undeletion requests. But how can I prevent the bot from questioning the copyright again? Mv (talk) 17:35, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mv, you need to add a copyright tag ({{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} in this case) under the licensing header to prevent the bot from marking these fies as having no license. --Ratekreel (talk) 18:16, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I thought this would be added by the volunteers who check the emails.
Thanks! Mv (talk) 18:24, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Email template

[edit]

In the email template at Commons:Email templates there is a bit that says "as shown here: [exact URL of the file uploaded on Wikimedia Commons]". The footnote seems to indicate that the sender can simply attach the file to the email rather than upload it to Commons. Is that true? Can they attach it and replace that text with something like "as shown in the email attachment"? TipsyElephant (talk) 01:42, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TipsyElephant: Yes, that is true, but of course it helps if they send enough information for the VRT member to fill out {{Information}}.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 03:53, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: I got them to send the email template. Now what? Does the VRT team upload it and then I just have to wait and search for it on Commons? Will they actually respond to the email with a link to where they upload it? TipsyElephant (talk) 11:13, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@TipsyElephant: Probably the latter, within 23 days.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:25, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: They responded and basically said the file has to be uploaded to Commons first. I don't think the copyright holder is going to take the time to figure out how to upload it. Can I upload it for them? If I do, what is the best way to do that? TipsyElephant (talk) 23:14, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@TipsyElephant: They can attach the file to an email reply or indicate a URL where it can be found. They can also seek local help with doing so, preferably from someone more technically inclined. Some of that help can be as simple as "click on the paperclip thingy".   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:19, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Jeff G. it looks like the copyright holder did attach the image and the response from Wikimedia is that they want him to upload the file fist. To clarify, am I not allowed to upload it? The copyright holder has to do it themselves? TipsyElephant (talk) 02:54, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@TipsyElephant: Sorry, I didn't know you had the image. You may upload it with {{subst:PP}} (capitalization of the second letter is important here).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:18, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: I walked through the upload wizard and the file is located here: File:Forest 404 launch small.jpg. It looks like the wizard added the template for me, but let me know if I'm missing anything. TipsyElephant (talk) 00:10, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@TipsyElephant: Please add the intended license and remove the line {{User:AntiCompositeBot/NoLicense/tag|month=February|day=14|year=2025}}.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 07:21, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do i get Flickr2Commons to upload marked as non-free?

US federal government accounts can't be bothered to use the correct licensing appareantly Trade (talk) 03:12, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Then Flickr2Commons won't help. Download to your own PC, upload from there, fill out {{Information}} (or a comparable template) accordingly. - Jmabel ! talk 03:51, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is a long-standing feature-request for Flickr2Commons. It would need to be done on the basis of users having to be authorised to use it, after demonstrating an understanding of relevant copyright issues. A question about photos

[edit]

Can i upload photos from a phone or should i use a camera? Also how many photos i should upload to wiki loves folklore? Aibarus (talk) 17:39, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aibarus: Hi, and welcome. You may upload photos from either phone or camera (but we only have app for Android), and as many as you want for most contests.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:58, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Aibarus! Let me say as answer to your questions, "Can i upload photos from a phone or should i use a camera?": both merit a YES. You can use your phone to snap pictures for an upload on Commons, but, if possible, you should use a dedicated camera. That way, better results are often possible, the technical quality is higher. That's rooted in the sensor size, the larger the sensor surface, the better. Phone cameras, while boasting double-digit pixel counts (12, 20, 35 or even more megapixel), do only have a sensor the size of the nail on your small finger. A somewhat decent camera may have less pixels, but those are on a surface the size of 2 or 3 nails. Thus, the light gathering surface is much larger and resulting images will become less noisy and sharper. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 01:55, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! <3 Aibarus (talk) 16:02, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

--Vivek Sarje (talk) 18:34, 13 February 2025 (UTC) I already put the source while uploading the file, please help me regarding how copywrite can be confirmed.[reply]

Hi Vivek Sarje. The file is missing information about the copyright holder. It won't be possible to determine whether the photo is in public domain or copyrighted without this information. But since the file was published in 1975, it is certainly not in public domain in India because Indian law protects photographs for 60 years from the death of author. Now assuming that author died in the same year (1975), the file would still not be in the public domain. The license under which the copyright holder might have released the photo is also not known and as such the file meets the criteria of for deletion under precautionary principle and COM:NETCOPYVIO. --Ratekreel (talk) 18:55, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Article Submission

Hello team,

I have recently submitted a page for review but I don't have an update yet if it was accepted and published. Can you help check please?

Changement d'une image

[edit]

Bonjour,

Animated SVG thumbnail preview

[edit]

On Indo-European migrations.gif I saw a notice to re-create the file in SVG. I have done so and uploaded the file to Indo-European migrations.svg, however the PNG previews of the file are not animated. Hello, suddenly the Commons format is different. I cannot access my watchlist. How do I get it back? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 16:14, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Photo taken in 2000 of a 1922 book?

[edit]

I'm trying to find a copyright-free photo of the cover (or title page) of the book "The Pivot of Civilization" by Margaret Sanger. The book was published in 1922. I cannot find a photo taken in the 1920s. But there are lots of recent photos of the 1922 cover e.g at https://www.treloars.com/pages/books/59792/margaret-sanger/the-pivot-of-civilization

Is that recent photo of the book cover free of copyright in U.S.?

If the photo of the cover is _not_ free of copyright, is it acceptable to use a low-resolution version of the photo in Wikipedia article, under "Fair use" principles (because there are no alternatives available to illustrate the book)? Noleander (talk) 18:43, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Any 2D photo of a book cover from 1922 is not protected by copyright. See {{Pd-art}}. However the photo should not include any 3D elements. Ruslik (talk) 20:11, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruslik0 Thanks for the info ... I was not aware of that exception! Noleander (talk) 20:22, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(cross-posted) @Noleander: Assuming that the photo is just an accurate reproduction of the book cover, then it has no copyright of its own; assuming that the book cover is from 1922 (not a later addition), it is in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel Thanks for the help ... you just made my day! Noleander (talk) 20:22, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

File download history

[edit]

Hello! How do I know how many times a file (audio, video, image) has been downloaded? I can't find the link on the View History link. Thank you for your help. Exopédien (talk) 11:14, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Exopédien: This is a trickier question than you were probably thinking, so I'm going to focus mainly on trying to clarify the question and at least for now confine my (partial) answer to image files to limit the number of cases we have to consider.
  1. I'm not at all sure you can do this.
  2. "[D]ownloaded" is a bit ambiguous here. Do you mean only if someone downloads the full-res version of the file, and saves a copy? At the other extreme, does every view of the image at whatever resolution count (after all, there's a download involved in that)? Are you only interested if they go directly to the file page, or are you concerned with every time someone accesses (for example) a Wikipedia page that includes the image? What about a deeplink from another website?
If anyone has good answers to how to do any of these, we will definitely want to add those to Commons:How to#If we upload content, how can we track its reuse?, which currently discusses only how to track reuse within Wikimedia projects. - Jmabel ! talk 18:13, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Jmabel: !
Thank you for your reply. Indeed, according to your response, the question is proving to be trickier than I thought.
Actually, I mean only if someone downloads a copy of the file. More precisely: from the "View history" page of a file, there is the link: "Media view analysis", which tells us how many people consulted it.
If there was a link like "Number of downloads" (=by people who have consulted the file), that would be the answer to my question.
I'm just curious, especially when it comes to images, in order to compare: "How many views" versus "How many downloads" of the file viewed.
Thanks again for your reply Jmabel. That's very kind of you.
Exopédien (talk) 07:14, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Exopédien: I know that when I want to download a JPEG or PNG file from Commons, I click on it to get full-res, then I right-click to use "Save Image As..." to save it. I don't think the host site can even distinguish whether I actually save a file, just whether I accessed the full-res image. I suspect that is not uncommon. - Jmabel ! talk 16:37, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: This is probably the case as you suggest, namely: a host site can't distinguish between "saving" and "just accessing" an image. So it's much more complicated than I thought. Anyway, many thanks for your reply.

Where to find the interwikis

[edit]

After the skin change, I can't find the interwiki links in the categories and pages. On Wikipedia it is a tool in the upper right corner with the language links. Where can I find a similar tool here? Does it exists? Is the creation of this tool, or something similar, planned? Thanks. --82.53.72.114 13:59, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Still at the bottom of the left nav for me, but that might be the result of some preference I've set. - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
When I log out there is a tab "Tools" at top right which displays a drop down list and if there are links, there is an "In other projects" section with links to Wikipedia and Wikidata etc. at the bottom of the list. This page is an example. TSventon (talk) 12:59, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
However, the links in the "tools" right column link to different types of projects but only to English-language projects. The links in the "main menu" left column link to all languages but only the Wikipedias. If a user is looking for projects other than Wikipedias and other than English-language, I suppose that they can try to go through the English-language projects and look if there are other links there, or find them by some other way. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:06, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a Wikidata item, everything is linked through that, so at worst it is two clicks away. - Jmabel ! talk 18:50, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

upload photographs taken by my late father that belong to my personal collection

[edit]

I wish to add photographs of my late father, WWII veteran pilot Georgios Pleionis, and photos that he had taken during the war, that belong to my personal family archive. How ca this be done? (I had uploaded them but after a week or so, disappeared).

Thank you in advanve Manolis Plionis (talk) 17:01, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Manolis Plionis:
First, I can immediately see why these were deleted: you did not offer a license! Commons can only accept images that are either in the public domain or free-licensed.
I'm going to make a strong guess that these photos are still copyrighted; you don't say what country's military your father was serving, but in pretty much every country of the world previously unpublished photos from the WWII era by someone who lived at least until 1955 would still be in copyright.
Sadly, you presumably would not own the intellectual property rights to the photographs of your father. They would presumably belong to [the heirs of] the people who took those photos, so you are not in a position to offer a license for those if they are not in the public domain.
Assuming the photos are still copyrighted and that you are the heir to your father's intellectual property rights, you can offer a license for the photographs by your father. Kein Erbe des Urheberrechts (No heir of the copyright)

[edit]

--Rosenzweig τ 17:30, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Modifications to the "List of Isotopes" pages

I was told to use the "Curl" function with your "List of isotopes" pages to update a personnal database about Isotopes and decays. This is great : I can now regenerate my database in less then 15 minutes compared to around 10 days to do the same thing manually.

However, I found some cases that need some attention ( I already applied corrections in my previous personal database

27 cases for which I have a correction 58 cases for which I have a small modification to your "List of isotopes" pages 19 cases for which an invalid numeric data was specified

Can I submit these cases to somebody at Wikipedia ?

I got this photo of the headquarters of Retro Studios from Nintendo of America's official career website, and I am unsure if I am able to upload it on Wikimedia or the English Wikipedia freely. If so, what license should I use? AltendoYT (talk) 00:40, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@AltendoYT: you linked a bare image here. Did you find this on some page that led you to think a license has been offered? If so, please link that page.
Also, you might want to read Commons:How to#How do I upload content to Commons if I am not the creator (or it is only partly my work)? - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: I also linked the website (in the above text that says official career website, but here is the link again in case), and you can find the image by clicking on the black dot on Texas in the US map.
When I said license, I meant images from the official website or parent company website. I don't know if it's free to share, that's why I'm asking. AltendoYT (talk) 01:06, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing there indicates any license. Please read the link I suggested you might want to read, which I think should explain sufficiently, but if it doesn't, then feel free to come back with any specific questions. - Jmabel ! talk 01:09, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Here is what the Terms of Use says:
A. Nintendo. Nintendo grants you a limited, non-sublicensable license to access and use the Services for your personal use only. Such license is subject to these Terms and does not include: (a) any resale or commercial use of the Services or the Materials therein; (b) the distribution, public performance or public display of any Materials; (c) modifying or otherwise making any derivative uses of the Services or the Materials, or any portion thereof; (d) downloading (other than the page caching) of any portion of the Services, the Materials or any information contained therein, except as expressly permitted on the Services; or (f) any use of the Services or the Materials other than for their intended purposes. Any use of the Services or the Materials other than as specifically authorized herein, without the prior written permission of Nintendo, is strictly prohibited and will terminate the license granted herein. Such unauthorized use may also violate applicable laws, including without limitation copyright and trademark laws and applicable communications regulations and statutes. Unless explicitly stated herein, nothing in these Terms shall be construed as conferring any license to intellectual property rights, whether by estoppel, implication or otherwise. Nintendo may revoke this license at any time.
Seeing how it says that public display of and downloading "Materials" (which I guess includes the linked image and other ones on the site) are prohibited, I don't think it is legal to upload this without Nintendo of America's approval (if you can confirm it isn't, I will ask them if it's okay to upload it), but I want to make sure just in case it is. AltendoYT (talk) 01:27, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All of which amounts to "no free license." As stated in the page I linked, that is the case for the vast bulk of what is on the Internet.
You can't just "ask them if it is OK to upload it." Even if they said "yes", that still wouldn't constitute a license. Again, please read Commons:How to#How do I upload content to Commons if I am not the creator (or it is only partly my work)?, and especially the section following that, "How do I get a free license from a third-party copyright-holder?" which will explain what you would have to do here (and why it is very unlikely Nintendo would want to do this). - Jmabel ! talk 04:20, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I had to think about this after uploading my photo of a snow dinosaur made by a little girl and her father, who were present. It was deleted for copyviol, since I had only asked whether it was okay to share with others and they said yes. I hadn't thought that this would fail to qualify as a license. So, next time if a similar opportunity arises, I'll flip the camera over to video and have the author(s) chant something like, "We made this dinosaur and want everybody to photograph it and see it and they don't have to tell us or pay us or say we did it." That, I figure, constitutes a CC0 which I could send privately to anyone with a concern about it. I'd rather do a CC-BY but that would mean giving a long explanation of what that means and y'know, those billions of normal people out there have no idea that a snow dinosaur makes them an author with a copyright. Jim.henderson (talk) 07:24, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To obtain a valid licence, this is exactly what is needed: "giving a long explanation of what it means and tell them that a snow dinosaur has ToO and is a work with a copyright. They then can chant "CC0" or (at least in the USA) release the dinosaur into the public domain, but they don't have to sing it. Prose works too. “This SVG file contains an illegal namespace“

[edit]

Hi!

I’m new to Wikimedia Commons, and I while I was trying to upload my first contribution, I encountered a weird error stating:

This SVG file contains an illegal namespace "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml".

I downloaded the file from the Tennessine Flag Designer. Could that be the problem or is it because it’s a XHTML image?

Thanks in advance! Derna in East Libya (talk) 09:57, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed a SVG image needs to have a "SVG" document type, not a "xhtml" document type, because SVG images are documents of the type SVG. Documents of the type XHTML are html pages. HTML. XHTML, SVG, XML are different types of SGML documents. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:10, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We're going to need a Bulgarian-speaker to answer this, because as a foreigner trying to decipher it, "нямам лицевзирани права" is completely ambiguous: does it mean "the rights are my own, not obtained by license from someone else" or "the rights belong to someone else and I don't have a license"? - Jmabel ! talk 19:22, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Elkost: can you help out here? - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The Bulgarian word "лицевзирани" is misspelled, must be "лицензирани", meaning "licensed" (in plural). Then the phrase "нямам лицевзирани права" should be read as "нямам лицензирани права", meaning "I don't have licensed rights". This editor has practically no wiki-experience, as he has globally only 3 edits: 2 in the Bg.wiki and the last is here. I will answer further to him in Bulgarian.

The Special:UploadWizard can "get from Flickr", subject to its terms of use, but this wizard could also be exapnded to upload from government websites whose content is in the public domain.

For example the document here: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/01/28/2025-01905/hiring-freeze

Has a PDF version here: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2025-01-28/pdf/2025-01905.pdf

  1. Upload a file to Wikimedia Commons using Commons:UploadWizard
  2. Upload a file directly to the Wikipedia in some language (which language?) using that Wikipedia's upload Wizard
  3. Upload a file to Wikimedia Commons using the upload Wizard that is part of Wikipedia in some language (which language?)
If it is number 3, please try number 1 instead.
If it is number 2, please ask on that Wikipedia, not here on Commons.
If it is number 1, are you trying to upload one file at a time or multiple files? What sort of system are you on? How fast is your Internet connection?

Handling photographs printed by another photographer

[edit]

I am researching the works of Christiaan Benjamin Nieuwenhuis and have found strong indications that some photographs attributed to him were not originally taken by him; his studio merely reproduced these prints at request by others as is/was often the case in the case of (amateur) photographers who do/did not have the means to print them themselves. (Some of) these prints were signed with his studio's (relief) stamp, leading now to the erroneous believe that he was the original photographer.

How does/can WikiMedia distinguish this kind of attribution? Is 'Publisher' correct in this case? 'Publisher' does not seem to apply to photographs; e.g., there is no category 'Photograph publishers' in 'Publishers by medium'. Freekc34 (talk) 10:38, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G. Thanks for the suggestion. Triggered by it I searched a little further and found Category:Photographic studios which seems to me a better fit ('Print shops' more press-related). Freekc34 (talk) 20:43, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, File:Native Americans and canoes in Belltown, ca. 1898 - DPLA - 52fedff74dbe49bc3a720a7761581559.jpg is an example of what I did with a very complicated case. - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel Nice! This is similar to what I want to achieve in my research: collecting information about a photograph from several sources, investigate the data found and then suggest/explain a more valid 'truth' for the photograph. However, I am not sure whether this, adding a discussion inside the description, is allowed in Wikimedia (like in 'no own research' in Wikipedia)....
Returning to my original question, I see that you simply appended 'reprinted by Asahel Curtis' in the Creator attribute; that is something I could do too. Thanks! Freekc34 (talk) 21:13, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Freekc34: Commons does not have nearly the same degree of animus toward original research as Wikipedia (though you will notice that I cite a lot of sources there, just not by footnoting). Basically, every photo of your own that you upload would be "orginal research" in Wikipedia terms. (Obviously, maps, for graphics that intend to display scientific knowledge, etc., our standards are closer to theirs.) Which is to say, it's not "anything goes", but in particular we are certainly friendlier to synthesis. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A performer was on a TV show and we only got a decent photo from the show itself hence the screenshot. AiielleVia (talk) 21:03, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No: you can't. That would be a copyright violation to the detriment of the person operating the camera and/or the production enterprise, the director of the TV network. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:08, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading screenshots of Commons

[edit]

I am planning to upload files to replace the existing File:Wikimedia Commons vector user toolbar not logged in.png and File:Wikimedia Commons vector user toolbar logged in.png, since the Vector 2022 skin is now the default. I've already taken these screenshots. If I upload them, do I replace these files, or upload separate ones? And what template do I use for these screenshots? {{Wikipedia screenshot}}? Justjourney (talk) 19:23, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Do I need extra permissions to upload these? Justjourney (talk) 19:24, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't those accurate representations of "Vector legacy"? Normally we don't overwrite things that could be of historical interest; we upload under a new file name. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel Alright then, so if I modified the file slightly (altering the username from my username to "Username" using Paint, do I have to indicate that I've made that change? Justjourney (talk) 01:28, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
By the way I was thinking about replacing the images of Commons:First steps/Account/Yes/IDK. Justjourney (talk) 01:33, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Justjourney: Maybe I'm confused. "if I modified the file slightly": if you modified what file slightly?
Yes, it would be good to have Commons:First steps/Account/Yes/IDK use Vector 2022 images. - Jmabel ! talk 01:39, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel What I meant is where the username link is (points to user page). I changed it from my username (Justjourney) to "username". I used Microsoft Paint to make these changes. Just to make sure: I use {{wikipedia sceenshot}}, even though it's a Wikimedia Commons screenshot? Justjourney (talk) 01:47, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That still completely fails to tell me what file you are talking about modifying. I don't know whether you are talking about some file on your computer, some particular file on Commons, or something else entirely.
For Commons content, {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} would seem to be the correct license, not one specific to Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 03:50, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel For the created part of the upload wizard, do I put in today's date? If yes, do I put in the UTC date? Justjourney (talk) 04:15, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To answer you last question: if this is something non-photographic you just created, it really doesn't matter that you are precise to the day. Yes, the UTC date would be fine, as would the date in your own time zone.
You still haven't told me what file you are talking about modifying. If you are just saying that you edited a screen grab, stored as a file on your own machine, with MS Paint, nothing about the change of a username rises to the level of copyrightability, so from an authorship point of view it is irrelevant. If you are saying something else, you will have to be clearer for me to answer. - Jmabel ! talk 04:36, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel So I've just uploaded the said files: File:Vector2022 skin logged-in.png and File:Vector2022 skin logged-out.png. What I meant about the modification is for File:Vector2022 skin logged-in.png, where I don't want my username "Justjourney" shown in the user page link. I've modified that part, removing my own username, and inserting the word "Username". Justjourney (talk) 04:46, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload political parties logos?

[edit]

I am hesitating if I could upload a political party logo, because I don't know if it is free to share, even if it was published on their own website as "Branding resources". Catwalk0337 (talk) 20:03, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Catwalk0337 When in doubt I find the best policy is not to upload a file. To avoid the doubt show us here by linking what you wish to upload 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:52, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Catwalk0337: In virtually every country of the world, almost any given logo either below the threshold of originality and is therefore in the public domain or above the threshold and therefore cannot be on Commons unless licensed by the copyright holder. A small number of logos may be so old that their copyrights have expired.
Being a political party is irrelevant; being a branding resource is irrelevant. - Jmabel ! talk 00:58, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I have a photo of me, taken in 1983 by a student at MSU, Texas. We haven't communicated since then and I don't recall his name. My only use of it has been as the top-page photo on my website, but I'm thinking to submit it to Wikipedia as my Infobox image. If I do so, which copyright-type would be most appropriate? PeterMcKenzieArmstrong (talk) 20:30, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@PeterMcKenzieArmstrong None. The picture is copyright of the photographer. Since you are alive there is no difficulty with a current photograph being taken and that photographer giving full, formal permission via COM:VRT, or your using another photographer[h where permissions are available formally. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:24, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You might find the Wikipedia article orphan work of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a way to trace my picture's photographer (from 40 years and 1000 miles ago).
Reading the Wiki piece re orphaned images, I gather that my picture *is* one of those
and so simply cannot be used. Am I wrong here? 2601:182:1081:3610:28BB:5216:D3EA:4659 17:20, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If I get permission from the photographer to use her photograph, am I permitted to upload it to Wikimedia?

uploading a photograph

[edit]

If I get permission from the photographer to use her photograph, am I permitted to upload it to Wikimedia? ButchRHanson (talk) 00:04, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If the photographer owns the complete rights to the photo and gives permission to use it under a free license and states the specific license: yes. Otherwise: No. Read VRT <- klick the link and read its contents. --C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 00:10, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've actually just recently been writing about that: Commons:Uploading works by a third party. The piece is pretty much finished; it does not yet detail the upload process, but Special:UploadWizard is reasonably transparent. - Jmabel ! talk 01:04, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Is this image ok to use? I assume this was a fan that the stadium wanted to highlight. We need to have an image of a soccer game at SoFi Stadium for an example. 00:50, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

--HalfOfAnOrange (talk) 00:50, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@HalfOfAnOrange: You don't indicate the source, which would be necessary to verify the license. - Jmabel ! talk 01:06, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It is from SoFi Stadium's Facebook page. This was from the Copa América match on June 26, 2024 between Mexico and Venezuela.

I don't see anything there to suggest they have offered a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license, and it seems absolutely implausible that they would offer a GFDL license. Did you just make that up? You cannot offer a license for work where you don't own the copyright. Should I just be nominating this for deletion? - Jmabel ! talk 01:43, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If I can find an alternate image with a proper license delete this one then. HalfOfAnOrange (talk) 04:58, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How can I get the permission to use the two photos

[edit]

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. I am Guangping, a scientific researcher of Jiangxi Agricultural University. My research interest is decoding the evolutionary mechanisms of camouflaged phenotype of vertebrates. We have just finished a work on two geckos, Phelsuma grandis (File:Potsdam Biosphäre Phelsuma-grandis 20220905 101904.jpg) and Madagascar leaf-tailed lizard (File:Leaf-tailed Lizard, Madagascar (21110205345).jpg). We would like to put these two photos in our manuscript for publication in scientific journal. HGPjxau (talk) 03:38, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@HGPjxau: Please see Commons:How_to#How_do_I_reuse_Commons_content? If it is still unclear to you after reading that, please ask whatever you specifically still don't follow. - Jmabel ! talk 03:54, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Have a new image of SoFi Stadium in soccer configuration

[edit]

I have the link to the image here.

https://aviewfrommyseat.com/large-photo/228452/SoFi+Stadium/section-514/row-5/seat-23/

I want to make sure this can be cleared before any uploads can take place. This has a name attached to it (Ariela). However, I am not familiar with uploading material not by me. HalfOfAnOrange (talk) 05:12, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@HalfOfAnOrange: Yes, that should be uploadable as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} per the "Uploaded Photos" section on https://aviewfrommyseat.com/legal/.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:46, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Image thumbnail not showing for pdf

[edit]

Typically when I upload PDFs, somehow Commons generates image thumbnails of the pages. For this file that did not happen.

How can I get thumbnails into Commons for this file?

thanks. Bluerasberry (talk) 18:03, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
