Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Victoria locks, Newry ship canal. The Newry Ship canal (as distinct from the Newry canal) opened in 1742 connecting Newry to Carlingford Lough and the Irish Sea. It allowed sea-going ships to berth in the centre of the town. It closed to commercial traffic in 1974 on the opening of the re-built harbour at Warrenpoint. The photograph shows the entrance to the Victoria locks (looking towards Newry)where the canal joined Carlingford Lough. There are not many ships still trading in 2006 which would be small enough to fit the locks.
