Description
English: A field of dozens of oil wells just offshore, at Summerland (Santa Barbara County), before 1905. Original caption reads: "Oil wells at Summerland, Santa Barbara County, California, showing the ocean bluffs in front of Sumerland [sic], the wharves and derricks over the wells."

. The photographer, G.H. Eldridge, died on June 29, 1905 (obituary). Most of these derricks had been removed by then, those that were not destroyed in the winter storms of 1903; the photo dates from some time before that.
