Description |
The artist can probably be identified as Adrian Blum, court painter to Leopold I in Vienna. He is recorded in the service of Leopold I between about 1668 and 1694. The subject also points in favour of such a conclusion. It suggests the influence of Frans van Mieris the Elder and his painting "At the Silk Merchant´s, signed 1660, which was added to Leopold I´s art collection after its completion and is now in Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv.no. 586 in Naumann, II, 1981, no. 31, pp. 33-35). The gesture of the man feeling the quality of the cloth with his right hand and touching the girl´s neck with his left, as if comparing the two, also occurs in a painting by Frans van Mieris which shows a wealthy man visiting a draper's shop. This amorous gesture was discussed by de Jongh, first in the catalogue of the exhibition "Tot Lering en Vermaak" (Amsterdam 1976 [II], no. 42) and later, with reference to the Stockholm painting. On the right the old woman makes an admonitory gesture and holds out a coin in her left hand. Both the cloth and the girl are going to cost the man money. (There is also an old man making an admonitory gesture in the background of the painting by van Mieris.) Formerly the painting was described as showing four portraits but, in view of its subject matter, this is unlikely. Judging by the costumes, the painting can be dated to c. 1670. No other works by Blum or Bloem are known. Frimmel mentions a copy after the van Mieris painting by Adam Braun but this is presumably a reference to the present painting (Frimmel 1913, p. 370, no. 75). |
