Description |
-*- Maton, who was born in Leiden, between 1643 and 1646, was recorded as an assistant in the studio of Gerrit Dou in 1669. He became a master of the Leiden guild in 1671. He moved to Stockholm in 1681 but was back in Leiden the following year in order to sell his house. He then returned to Stockholm, where he died. His style and subject-matter through his career were based on those of Dou (Schneider 1920, p. 224). The theme of a hermit at prayer, surronded by a bible, crucifix and skull, emanates from Gerrit Dou, who was the pioneer of the Leiden school and for a short time Maton´s teacher. The master´s unmistakable influence argues in favour of an early dating, possibly before Maton went to Sweden. |
