Harriet Martineau writes to Garrison to point out an "extraordinary misstatement" published in the August 7th edition of the Liberator concerning the "theory & spirit of the political institutions of England", and in particular concerning the political career of John Bright. Martineau states that, contrary to the claims of the article, that Bright's political "failure" stems neither from his class origins nor religious faith, but due to his "want of political knowledge", amongst other negative qualities
