May writes about his daughter and two other children under his care and their fondness for winter games. He tells of his son Edward's account of the removal of a kind of naval mine from the vicinity of the Savannah harbor. May reasserts his belief in the value and importance of Webb's letters to the weekly journal, the "National Anti-Slavery Standard." He criticizes Harriet Martineau for contradicting him and mentions her anger over the Morrill Tariff. May says the London Times exerts a strong influence in favor of slavery and compares the agendas and audiences of "The New York Times," "The New York Herald," and "The New York Tribune." He adds that no insult to England was intended in the Mason and Slidell incident
