In the margin of the second leaf is a note written by Webb

May hears of the safe return of Webb's son, Richard. He gives a long account of John Brown and says that Brown should have been tried in a U.S. court. May tells Webb that numerous meetings were held on the day of Brown's death and that Brown's retaliatory acts against the border ruffians have not been proved. In a postscript dated December 12, May warns Webb against a man who, under the assumed name "John Wilson," is going to England and claims to have been one of Brown's company at Harpers Ferry
