He sends his annual financial account and comments on the international food situation, which "seemed to be supposed, at one time, that America must feed Great Britain and France" for the coming year. He tells Webb that he went to Canada with his family and describes the visit of the Prince of Wales. May informs Webb that his health is poor. He mentions J.A. Horner and wants to know about the distribution of the anti-slavery libraries. He discusses Anthony Trollope's attitude toward emancipated slaves and compares it with other opinions
