Hurlbut, whom Loring describes as the betrothed of his niece, as a "young man of almost every grace & accomplishment", and as an anti-slavery man (despite his Carolinian lineage.) Loring states that Hurlbert's health has obliged him to pass a winter in the West Indies to recover
