Oliver Johnson accepts William Lloyd Garrison's explanation behind his dismissal by the Executive Committee "in good faith", and takes assurance in knowing that the "measure was adopted not willingly but with reluctance, for pecuniary reasons only". Johnson reiterates his displeasure with the manner in which the dismissal was effected. Johnson states his conviction that the Excutive Committee are panicking at temporary economic misfortune, and declares that their present state of finances cannot be so poor that they should "cripple our operations at this important point"
