On verso, the delivery address is "Rev. A. A. Phelps, Boston, Mass." It was postmarked with a brown circular stamp that reads "Salem Mas. Mar 16"
It is stamped, "PHELPS MSS." in the head- fore corner of the first page
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with an embossed octagonal logo in the head- spine corner. The embossed octagon contains the image of a crown above the word "BATH." Above the salutation, the number "22" is written in pencil. On the third page, towards the spine edge of the signature, there is a hole measuring about 1.7 x 1.5 cm, and another hole towards the fore edge of the signature, extending about 1.2 cm from the edge of the page
Charles Turner Torrey writes to Amos A. Phelps describing his opinions of Taylorism (or New Haven theology). He then discusses finding a new minister for the church in Salem, stating his intention to "strain every proper cord to its utmost tension to get an abolitionist in there." Torrey also writes about his upcoming lectures in Beverly Village and Marblehead
