Amos A. Phelps writes to Lewis Tappan that he cannot accept the secretaryship of the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society under the terms specified in the letter, which differ from what was discussed in the meeting. He then submits the terms under which he will accept the office. This includes the whole or part of his salary being provided by private subscriptions, and not by the organization itself, to avoid potential criticism for the high salary required for living in the region where he resides
