Description |
Svenska: VAS. Gravfynd. Eastern Han dynasty, 1st-2nd century AD.Copying a contemporary bronze, the vase has a band round the shoulder with hunting scenes applied in relief, containing both real and imaginary creatures: tigers, deer, winged dragons and flying birds, and a mounted archer shooting backwards at a winged dragon. This fantastical scene is complemented by two beast masks on the shoulder with pendant rings. Lead glazing was the most successful earthenware glaze-type in history. It was used in Egypt, the southern Mediterranean and northern Europe from the 3rd century BC to the present day, and first appeared in China about 400 BC. Lead glazes are relatively easy to make, and when new are brilliant and brightly coloured. However, they weather and chip easily, and are poisonous when used for eating and drinking, so they were only suitable for burial wares.
