Die Giewenschleife besteht aus einerlangen, mit dünnen Holzblättchen bestückten Kette, die man vom Ufer und vom Nachen aus am Flussgrund entlang schleppt; auf diese Weise werden "Giewen" oder Grundlinge in ein Hamennetz getrieben. Beim Schleppnetz handelt es sich um einen kegelförmigen Maschensack, den man im quer gestellten Nachen über die Bordwand gleiten lässt. Grundlinge dienen als lebende Köder, wenn die Fischer die Grundschnur für Aale auslegen, an der rund 40 Angelhaken befestigt sind. Anstelle dieses weitgehend untauglich gewordenen Aalfanggeräts benutzen die Moselfischer heute die allgemein übliche Reuse.
