Summary
[edit]DescriptionDaphne&ApolloOvermantle StaffordBarton Dolton.xcf |
English: Plaster overmantle depicting Daphne and Apollo in relief, within a strapwork frame. (Detail see File:Daphne&Apollo Overmantle StaffordBarton Dolton.xcf) Elizabethan, second half of 16th century. Daphne is depicted as she transforms into an olive tree, with her fingers shown as leaves. Apollo watches on, with his quiver of arrows strapped over his shoulder. Stafford Barton in the parish of Dolton, Devon, England. Not in its original location, it was moved from elsewhere, possibly with the decorative plaster ceiling which came from the house of a wealthy merchant in Barnstaple, Devon, by Charles Luxmoore (1872–1933), owner of Stafford Barton. The cornice of the decorative ceiling is modern and shows the arms of Luxmoore. |
