Summary
[edit]DescriptionDaphne&Apollo Overmantle StaffordBarton Dolton.xcf |
English: Detail of central image of plaster overmantle depicting Daphne and Apollo in relief, Stafford Barton in the parish of Dolton, Devon, England. Elizabethan, second half of 16th century. Period identified due to typical Elizabethan strapwork surround (see full image File:Daphne&ApolloOvermantle StaffordBarton Dolton.xcf. Daphne is depicted as she transforms into an olive tree, with her fingers shown as leaves. Apollo watches on, with his quiver of arrows strapped over his shoulder. Clearly the artist had never seen olive trees, as he shows them bearing fruits in bunches, like grapes. Not in its original location, it was moved from elsewhere, possibly with the decorative plaster ceiling which came from the house of a wealthy merchant in Barnstaple, Devon, by Charles Luxmoore (1872–1933), owner of Stafford Barton. |
