On the 1st front free endpaper recto of c. 1 are a brief inscription in ink signed by John Black, and the penciled signatures of C.W. Reynell and Ellis Waterhouse. On the 2nd front free endpaper recto is John Black's 18-line inscription, incorporating a citation from Gibbon referring to the present work. Below it is a note by C.W.R. identifying Black as "the Dr. Black of Cobbett, many years Editor of the Morning Chronicle." The printer's device on the t.p. of c. 1 has been painted with water colors
Inscribed in right margin of t.p. of c. 2 is: Cantate Domine Canticum noum. An owner's inscription by Gio. Paolo Gualtero appears at either side of printer's device
