Description
English: A French copy of the Manchu map of the Kingdom of Korea under the Sukjong King (1661–1720) of the Joseon Dynasty, prepared by Chinese cartographers under the direction of Jesuit missionaries during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty from (1) careful surveys of the border undertaken by Jean-Baptiste Régis, Pierre Jartoux, and Ehrenberg Xavier Fridelli in 1709 and 1710, (2) an official copy of an intentionally inexact and error-ridden original Korean map of the drainage basins south and southeast of Changbai Mountain provided to the ambassador Mukedeng by the prime minister Yi Yu (1645–1721) in 1713, (3) a general map of Korea's eight provinces with some inexact route and distance information, also provided to Mukedeng's embassy, and (4) survey information between the border and Seoul taken by the Jesuit-trained He Guozhu of the Bureau of Mathematics (Qintianjian), used to adjust the Korean figures for other areas.
