English: (e) Confocal and (f) processed IMARIS images of Rhizosolenia-Richelia symbioses (het-1) at 6 m (75 % surface incidence) during the OUTPACE (Oligotrophy to Ultra-oligotrophy Pacific Experiment). Green fluorescence indicates the chloroplast of the diatoms, and red fluorescence are the Richelia filaments; Microscopic observations indicate that near the surface Rhizosolenia populations were already showing signs of decay since the silicified cell-wall frustules were broken and free filaments of Richelia were
