Description
Svenska: PENSELBURK. Cylindrisk. Dekor i blått. Brush jar, Kangxi, Qing-dynasty. Porcelain brushpot decorated in underglaze cobalt blue Qing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)A brushpot is an article for a scholar’s desk, and this vessel is decorated with a pattern well-suited to such a client, for it depicts dragons writhing among clouds. The motif was the subject of scroll paintings, harking back to the celebrated Nine Dragons by Chen Rong (c.1200-66), painted in 1244. That work is considered to be the oldest and finest dragon scroll, in which each of the mythical creatures is expressed in different positions amidst clouds, water and mountains, and it represents the dynamic forces of nature in Daoism.
