Countries

[edit]

The international team encourages the documentation of all heritage, and recognizes the value of tailored campaigns to any communities that feel a special bond to their local, regional, state or national heritage. However, on this page we list the countries from the viewpoint of the international jury. We realize that the word 'country' can have different definitions. Within our international jury framework, we have arrived at the following interim working definition:

"We use the UN(ESCO) membership as the basis from which we work. We can optionally derive from that on a case by case basis 1) if it is de facto a separate country, including international diplomacy and heritage policy, and could be UN-memberstate if not for international conflicts etc (examples: Taiwan, Kosovo, etc) 2) if there is a significant 'distance' with a component of the country that makes it for traveling purposes a different country. Examples: overseas territories, Hong Kong etc. If there is minor overlap between two participating countries, the photo can participate in any country where it is registered as such (border conflicts etc). A country will not be considered with separate submissions to the finale if there is (near) full overlap with another participating national competition, if it fits exception 2). This to avoid double participation of images. In the case of exception 1), it will be considered on a case by case basis. The international jury coordinator (as representative for the international team and the jury) makes this decision."

I have applied this definition accordingly. We hope this is primarily a practical definition. This does not prohibit any emphases that can be put on subcompetitions. In the past, several countries have used special awards to encourage uploading of specific sets of monuments, such as heritage from a specific region within the territory. Also, each of the national competitions has a lot of latitude in how to select its 10 nominees and how much attention is paid in that to (geographic) diversity. Bosnia and Herzegovina

[edit]

@Palapa: Please note that I have moved Bosnia-Herzegovina to the 'maybe' column. I have not seen much progress on a national competition, and have not heard back after my email to you. But, if I'm wrong, please do let me know! I hope that we can make it work, this year or the next. Happy to help. Effeietsanders (talk) 00:18, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Brazil

[edit]

@Rodrigo Padula: Please be aware that I just moved Brazil to the 'maybe' column. This is because I don't see updates to the landing page on ptwiki yet, and didn't see any signals that there's an active group working on this, combined with the fact that the groups have been derecognized. The latter is no problem as such, but can indicate that you're busy with other things. Anyhow, please let me know if there's an active group of people working on this and when the landing pages are up to date. Effeietsanders (talk) 00:21, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Effeietsanders and other WLM organizers, I and Teles could take over organizing WLM in Brazil this year if no one else is organizing it. Chico Venancio (talk) 12:56, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(note: I am in contact now with Padula via email. I have encouraged him to continue this conversation here Effeietsanders (talk) 20:19, 30 August 2018 (UTC))[reply]
Effeietsanders As I told you by email, our team were finishing a very important project during the last weeks, so we didnt had time to advance with the WLM updates on pt.wiki. I contacted some potential partners last month to evaluate ways to get local support for prizes and pomotion for the contest. Since we use pt.wiki to organize/promote the contest I cant see ways that Chicocvenancio can help us, since he was blocked by the community and dont have permission to edit pt.wikipedia pages anymore. We are working to fix all issues to move forward with WLM 2018. best regardsRodrigo Padula (talk) 21:30, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Go right ahead and try to update the monument list and organize the event, we have no interest in taking it away from you, since you were unresponsive here, even after being called attention to this in Iberocoop telegram group, it seemed you were not at all interested in organizing a successful event.
At any rate, this is a photographic contest for uploading into Wikimedia Commons, I see no reason Portuguese Wikipedia admin decisions have any relevance. If necessary, in the event your lack of interest persisted, Teles would be able to easily make whatever edits I could not. You are completely out of line in attacking me here. Chico Venancio (talk) 00:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Chicocvenancio Attacking? Please dont start it here too Chico! Dont worry about WLM ;-) it's under control Rodrigo Padula (talk) 01:33, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Both: please refrain from personally attacking each other. Chico, thanks for your offer of help; glad to hear that Padula has it under control after all.
Padula: no need to explain the why, lets work from the current situation. You can find some suggestions on what kind of information the landing pages should contain, but having partners provide in-kind prizes sounds fine. Effeietsanders (talk) 05:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Rodrigo Padula: Hi! Can you please inform me where I can find the landing page for Wiki Loves Monuments in Brazil? Romaine (talk) 13:38, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Romaine our landing page is on pt.wiki, we are finishing some updates until early afternoon. Rodrigo Padula (talk) 03:58, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Rodrigo Padula: Thank you for providing the landing page. We would prefer also to have somewhere an English summary, so people that have visited Brazil but do not speak Portuguese are able to know how to participate and able to find the lists to upload photos. This English part can be on pt-wiki (like as a tab) or on Commons. But this is not a breaking point for the banner. What is a breaking point is that for the banner I need to have a text that we will show. The text of last year is in the table at Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/CentralNotice#Main_banner_text. Is this text up-to-date? Please ping me when you have the text, then I can activate the banner for Brazil. Romaine (talk) 09:52, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Rodrigo Padula: Thank you for updating the text. I assume the contest still runs until 30 September. I just activated the banner. As I had to create a special banner for Brazil to deal with the language issue we noticed in earlier years, you can have a different image on the right. Romaine (talk) 16:03, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sudan

[edit]

@AndreaSafi: Thanks for your interest! Because I have not heard back after my emails to you, and because I don't see much progress on the competition, I have moved Sudan to 'maybe'. Please let us know if there is any way we can help make this happen in Sudan, I would be really excited to see that happen! This year, or in 2019. Effeietsanders (talk) 00:22, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia

[edit]

@Mehman97: Can you please confirm if the participation from Georgia is definite, or that it is pending grant approval? Effeietsanders (talk) 05:32, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: Georgia in all cases will participate, the problem with the grant we will soon solve. Best --Mehman 97 12:40, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Iraq

[edit]

@Sarmad Yaseen: Can you please confirm if the participation of Iraq is definite, or depends on grant approval? Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 05:34, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

While waiting for the update on the grant status, I'm moving Iraq to 'likely' participating. If participation does not depend of the grant, please feel free to move it back. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nigeria

[edit]

@Olaniyan Olushola: Can you please confirm if the participation from Nigeria is definite, or depends on grant approval? Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 05:35, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Geraki: Thanks for the update. Just a quick suggestion: on wlm.wikimedia.gr (nice website!) the only thing that I'm missing is a clear mention that the 'upload' button is actually available in the lists. The instructions could perhaps be a bit more visible, but overall, nice! Effeietsanders (talk) 18:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion Effeietsanders. The greek text was more clear, I have updated the english text. -Geraki TLG 08:39, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ghana

@Sandiooses: The list does not yet contain a link to a completed landing page. Please let us know if everything is going according to plan, and if you need any help. Please note that we have created some documentation on what a landing page should contain, and provided an example for you. See here: Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentation/Landing_page. @Sandiooses, Kwameghana, and Enock4seth: With the current state of the landing page, I'm moving Ghana for now to the 'likely participating' column. Please let me know if we can help in any way with setting up a landing page. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(also sent an email. For now, we will not open the competition/banners until this is resolved.) Effeietsanders (talk) 19:20, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Owula kpakpo and Shahadusadik: I saw that you made several edits on the example page and your work on the landing page. I copied the integrated design to your landing page. Can you confirm that this is the complete page? Then we can go live! Thanks. Effeietsanders (talk) 03:16, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Effeietsanders, let me reach out to the other members of the WLM team and get back to you with a confirmed response so you can go live. Thanks for reaching out to us. --Owula kpakpo (talk) 17:29, 3 September 2018 (UTC), 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sandiooses and Owula kpakpo: Thanks for looking into it. I see that you changed the page back to a more minimalist page. Please note that several critical pieces of information are currently missing (for example: where to find the monuments, how to upload with the identifier, etc). Once you're comfortable with the page, please ping us. Effeietsanders (talk) 17:19, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sandiooses and Owula kpakpo: Unfortunately we haven't heard back since. We will have to consider the competition 'closed' on September 14 (00:00h UTC). If you manage to get everything in order before then, you can still participate (with a shorter duration: will still have to end Sept 30). This is the last call. I'm sorry that we have to draw the line somewhere: we have to give people at least some fair expectation of a competition. Of course you could still organize some photo competition under a different name locally, without the international context. Effeietsanders (talk) 02:12, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Effeietsanders, what do you mean by we put everything in order? From what I am gathering we have a grant prepared already and its been approved but we yet to receive the funds. Also what else haven't we done since the last time we spoke. Please let us know so we work on that. --Owula kpakpo (talk) 15:08, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Owula kpakpo: Yes, I was glad to see your grant got approved. But participating in the competition does not necessarily depend on that. The main items in the Instructions for Local Organizers are that there should be a good landing page (see documentation for that) and that you should set up the 'competition' component (jury process etc). At this point, there is still some work to be done on improving the landing page. This is why the Ghana competition is not live yet.
The landing page should have a clear outline of how to participate. This means clear steps that newcomers can follow, including where to find the monuments, how to upload, how to use the identifier in that process. There seems to be a good list with clear upload links already available, but it needs to be linked, described and instructed.
Also, how far along are you with setting up the jury? We can help you with the jury tool (Commons:Montage - sign up here) but you will need to find suitable jury members and agree on the jury process.
Basically, all the puzzle pieces have been there for weeks, it just requires someone to put them together. Hope that works out! If you have any questions, please do reach out. I'll be busy most of today, but I'm confident you can also ask someone like user:Romaine for help. Effeietsanders (talk) 16:06, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: You can appreciate that from the last time we spoke our landing page has been worked on and I believe it's up to date. see link here [1]. With the Jury we are still working on getting them so I believe that would be worked on. Aside that visit our landing page and see if there are still more to do. --Owula kpakpo (talk) 16:35, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Owula kpakpo: Thanks for pointing out those edits - I indeed missed those (I wish I would have been aware of them before). That takes care of some of the missing information indeed, but it does not address yet how to upload. It does not mention that people should remember the identifier (write them down) and add those in the upload form. It does not tell people that using the specific upload button with the right row in the monument table will automatically include the information, and will also constitute a valid submission. It also suggests that buildings like the ones on the list, but who are not actually on the list would be valid (which is not the case currently). If you could clarify those points, it would help new editors a lot to participate without getting disqualified later (for not identifying the monument). Effeietsanders (talk) 23:07, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Example page / Ghana

[edit]

@Shahadusadik: I noticed that you edited Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Documentation/Example landing page. I'm glad you appreciate the example. However, you edited the example itself :) You're more than welcome to reuse it all, or parts of it. Feel free to use it to improve upon Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in Ghana as discussed above. Freedom of Panorama is indeed something that should probably be touched upon. Effeietsanders (talk) 23:25, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: Thank you for the feedback. I want to move the changes I made to the Ghana page. Is that OK? Please check it out here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentation/Example_landing_page Shahadusadik (talk) 12:41, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Shahadusadik: Thanks for the attempt. I restored the example page, and copied your altered version to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in Ghana/draft.
You could use either page as a basis, but the important thing is that the workflow for the participant is super clear. In this case, that means that you should explain people in the 4/5 steps that they should go to the monument list (you can link it directly in the step, because it is only a single list in Ghana), and tell them to click on the upload button next to the relevant monument that they photographed. That should make the process even simpler. Does that make sense? Effeietsanders (talk) 00:49, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wordpress

[edit]

@Sandiooses: I noticed that you changed the table and moved Ghana from not ready to ready. I'm afraid that the new landing page is mostly OK, it is still missing instructions on exactly how to upload and identify their images with the correct monument. Also, there's room for misunderstanding with a sentence like "However, if you know other monuments and sites you can share with the world, your photos are welcome". With this information, it is impossible for people to understand what they are actually allowed to upload, and how to do that in a correct way.

As explained above, that should be pretty easy to fix, given that there is an upload button in the list of monuments for each monument. If they use any of those buttons, the identification should be automatic. But monuments that are not on the list, are typically not accepted.

I'm very sorry that you did not see an opportunity to discuss the contest in more detail earlier. We could have figured this out pretty quickly. We can also have a conversation about what we can do to create a more representative list, etc.

All in all, it unfortunately seems like there are some remaining problems still. As I also communicated earlier, it seems unlikely that Ghana can still participate at this point. We're more than two weeks into the competition, and the banners are still not live. Given that we have had a back and forth over the past 3 weeks, and not managed to get a page in order, I'm afraid we have to draw a line somewhere. I'm really sorry that it did not work out. Effeietsanders (talk) 15:44, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sandiooses, Effeietsanders, and Enock4seth: How come Ghana is not part of the participating countries this year? --Kwameghana (talk) 08:19, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Kwameghana: both sides tried hard to make Wiki Loves Monuments happen in Ghana this year, however, there were critical missing pieces on the landing page which are requirements for the international team to be able to turn on the Wikimedia banners for any campaign. Given that we were almost 2 weeks into September and that the contest had to conclude by the end of September, the international team could not accommodate the campaign in Ghana this year. We look forward to welcoming back Ghana to the context next year, and we hope that in the mean time we work together to make sure all requirements are met prior to the start of next year's campaign. --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 23:10, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: We are using wlm.org.il, the same website as every other year. Not all content is finalized yet though. —Ynhockey (talk) 07:56, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ynhockey: Sure, thanks! Could you please link the correct page from the table? Effeietsanders (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: At the risk of sounding stupid, I am at a loss as to which table you mean. It doesn't look like the participating countries table includes any external landing pages for any country. Are we the only ones with an actual website? I remember that in the past most countries had one. —Ynhockey (talk) 07:22, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ynhockey: Thanks for asking for clarification. In the table, the name of the country is linked to the landing page or a page describing the competition that then links to the landing page. Several of those are separate websites, but it is no longer the majority (I think). Then, there is also the overview on this page, which is more explicitely the landing page where the centralnotice should link to. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:15, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: I have linked to our landing page in both cases, but it does not seem like any other country has an external links in the table, hence my confusion. I think we are expected to create another separate on-wiki landing page? We have one in Hebrew, and don't think we intend to create one in English as of right now. —Ynhockey (talk) 18:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ynhockey: Actually, Austria and Italy also have an external link :) There's no need for an onwiki landing page as far as we're concerned. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:38, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Arianit: it seems that I pinged you incorrectly the first time. Second attempt. Effeietsanders (talk) 20:09, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: Thanks for the ping. Our landing page on the wiki is here. Can you please confirm all is good. --Arianit (talk) 11:29, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Arianit: Thanks for the update. It would probably work as a very minimalist version, but I would strongly recommend to create more of a 'landing page' out of it, as described in the documentation I linked. There is some information missing such as why people should participate, etc. I am in particular unclear if Albania and Kosovo are organizing two separate competitions, or it is a single competition (the same way that used to be the case for Belgium and Luxembourg). The website wikilovesmonuments.al seems a more appropriate website, but seems at first glance a bit outdated (first message is about winners from 2016?). Effeietsanders (talk) 18:21, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: I understand. Two separate competitions, a joint website. We'll be updating the website tomorrow and that will be used to motivate and to lead people to the wiki to participate. I'll make the wiki pages nicer tomorrow per the suggested landing page. --Arianit (talk) 18:51, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Arianit: If you're using the Albanian external page as landing page, that is fine with me. As long as it is clear :) No need to duplicate efforts. But it is indeed quite unusual to have separate competitions but the same landing page. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:54, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it's a legacy from the past. --Arianit (talk) 19:02, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@عباد ديرانية: Thanks, I see some updates have been made. While this is one competition, please be aware that the uploads should be in the separate upload forms (wlm-jo for Jordan, wlm-ps for Palestine, etc). That is because the identifiers are on a national level. @Romaine: Please correct me if I'm wrong. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:42, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: Thanks for following up. To be honest, I've already dropped this upload link in a few announcements for the contest in the Levant, supposing it'll work for any country. It's still possible to go back and edit the links since the contest didn't start yet, however, is it absolutely necessary to use a different link for each country? This way, each time I post something about the contest I'll have to throw three extra links plus warnings for people not to click on the wrong one --Abbad (talk) 03:03, 30 August 2018 (UTC).[reply]
@عباد ديرانية: Yeah, otherwise the form would have to be adapted quite a bit (not sure how). The easiest is probably to always link to the landing page, or some kind of disambiguation page, and have them select their country there. You could create some page with only "Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the Levant - select the country you want to upload an image for:" and then the four upload links. But honestly, I would just link to the landing page which also has the relevant information of where to find the identifier, etc. Effeietsanders (talk) 06:11, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: Linking the landing page should be good enough. Will do! --Abbad (talk) 13:26, 31 August 2018 (UTC).[reply]

@JMagalhães: With the current state of the landing page, I'm moving Portugal for now to the 'likely participating' column. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@DarwIn: See above. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:50, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: In case JMagalhães is unable to organize, Wikimedia Portugal can try to take over the organization. But we would like to have something like a 24 hour deadline (or less), in order to prepare at least the minimum for starting the contest.-- Darwin Ahoy! 19:06, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@JMagalhães and DarwIn: OK, Let me know what works for you. It sounds like if JMagelhaes does not respond in the next 24 hours and shows everything is ready to go, WMPT can take over. WLM-pt can start a day late (and end the usual day), if necessary. Effeietsanders (talk) 19:14, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders and DarwIn: I'm sorry. I've been on vacation and away from home until now and wi-fi connection was much, much worse than what I had anticipated. I am home now. I'll fix the last details tonight. Any help from WMPT will be fully appreciated. I'm available at fb. JMagalhães (talk) 19:21, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@JMagalhães: I wasn't able to find any information about your jury process. Could you point me to that? I assume all jury members are confirmed by now? Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 14:54, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@JMagalhães and DarwIn: Ping. Any update? Effeietsanders (talk) 16:25, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: Hi Effe, I'm not connected to the organization of this edition of WLM here in Portugal, and I've no idea of what is going on with the jury. Anyway, if you think I may be of any help, just ping me again.-- Darwin Ahoy! 18:32, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen your email, but I prefer to use the website for users. I'm guessing the issue is with the Central Notice? Where can I translate/change this?--Strainu (talk) 16:43, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Strainu: I was triggered primarily by the red link on Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2018/Participating countries. Whether your landing page is on Commons or externally, does not matter from our perspective. Whatever works for you. Effeietsanders (talk) 20:54, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: . Hello! I've created a very simple landing page on Wikimedia Commons, but there is a link to the contest website for Spain. There, people can find all information about the contest. Must we have all information also on the Wikimedia Commons page? Thanks. --Millars (talk) 11:32, 27 August 2018 (UTC) PS In case a Wikimedia Commons landing page with all information must be necessary we'll edit it before September 1st.[reply]
@Millars: I don't mind if it is on commons or externally - as long as it contains all the necessary information :) It's fine to keep doing what you have been doing the past years. I just pinged all the red links. Effeietsanders (talk) 14:42, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Effeietsanders: Our technichal issues are solved now. Could you update https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/ with http://wikilovesmonuments.se for Swedish and https://wikimedia.se/sv/wlm/english for English. Thanks in advance. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 08:46, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done, thanks. Effeietsanders (talk) 14:58, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bolivia

[edit]

Hi alhen & caleidoscopic, Looking at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in Bolivia the landing page for Wiki Loves Monuments in Bolivia is not ready yet. It must at least indicate what the rules are and how people can participate, this is missing or unclear. See also: Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Documentation/Landing page and an example at: Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Documentation/Example landing page. Please make sure it is indicated people have to click on the monument number in the list to upload. (In many other tables we link the image File:Missing-monuments-image.svg.) Please make sure your landing page is ready before your contest starts. If you have any questions, please let me know! Romaine (talk) 11:47, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We have the hands put in this, give us some hours to fix something unclear and excuse my funny english. --Caleidoscopic (talk) 16:37, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
