This talk page is to discuss about the Central Notice banners used for Wiki Loves Monuments. Suggestions and discussions are welcome to kill the drop off in rate of submissions.

Change in wordings

[edit]

The better and simple way to make an attempt is to change the wordings. People might have got bored seeing the same banner and the same text. "Wiki Loves Monuments: Photograph a monument, help Wikipedia and win!" sounds very introductory. Now, we should talk about our record, efforts of/from volunteers, etc. -- ♪Karthik♫ ♪Nadar♫ 03:49, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Brain storming

[edit]

I think it's important that we just come up with a bunch of ideas, most of which we'll discard, but as long as we get a few that work, that strike a chord, even if on the surface they might seem silly, then we'll have succeeded.

It's been pointed out that there are two types of contributors 1) hard-core mass uploaders and 2) newbies. I suggest we concentrate on attracting the newbies, the hard core just need(ed) one look at a banner and start(ed) without much help from us.

A new design might work as well as new words, e.g. a photo that covers most of the banner. We'd need to get a release from the uploader because we won't be able to give proper attribution on a CC-BY license.

Crazy ideas

[edit]

All followed by a link to Wiki Loves Monuments, unless otherwise noted

  • It's a snap!
  • Snap a snapshot for Wikipedia
  • Upload your Heritage
  • Your Heritage, Your Photos (break) on Wikipedia
  • Make History on Wikipedia
  • Make History on Wikipedia, Upload Your Photos
  • Your Photos are Making History on Wikipedia (break) Thank you! (for near the end of the contest)
  • Where have you been? (break) Send some photos!
  • Just a big "Wiki Loves Monuments" with a small "Upload now" beneath

I'm sure others can do better. Smallbones (talk) 12:58, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Would you like to win nice prizes?

Samat (talk) 13:15, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I like 'upload your heritage', but it might sound a bit like genealogy. 'Make History on Wikipedia, Upload Your Photos' has my support. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 16:45, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Minor changes

[edit]

I bolded "Wiki Loves Monuments" and added a comma based on the Wikipedia MOS in the banners - these are very minor, but if anyone objects please let me know. —Mono 04:08, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I object! You do not communicate with us. It is totally unacceptable. Wiki Loves Monuments is a team effort, no place for solo riders. Romaine (talk) 19:37, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Commas are very unacceptable and apparently conjunctions are too. "Wiki Loves Monuments is a team effort, no place for solo riders." Cheers, —Mono 03:13, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Update to English text

[edit]

Can we agree on an update to the English text now, so that we can change the CentralNotice text this weekend (Sat 21st Sept)? The change will not affect non-English countries, who can do something totally different if desired.

I suggest:

Have you been anywhere interesting? Please upload your photos! --MichaelMaggs (talk) 16:56, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Works for me. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 18:44, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Works for me too. I'll also suggest
Your Photos are Making History on Wikipedia. Thank you!
starting on Friday the 27th. We do need to say thank you and having this on Friday (rather than Saturday) will remind people that it's the last weekend and time to get their last photos in. Smallbones (talk) 19:47, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wholeheartedly agree. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 19:51, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree too. Good idea. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 08:57, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I like these ideas. (Take with a grain of salt. I also liked 'Where have you been?' :) --SJ+ 09:18, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked Romaine if he will make the change for us tomorrow. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 20:52, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I disagree, I think they are not descriptive enough. Thank you means nothing - just say the contest will end soon. Besides, we don't want people's pictures of their Yosemite trip. You should realize that no one has a clue what WLM even is and the banners should provide some context... —Mono 02:24, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The first change has been made, but it alters the UK English text only. You can have something different if you want in the US. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 08:17, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
