Red Pins

Do you only want photographs of "Red Pin" monuments? 139.102.158.185 23:02, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

I assume with Red Pin you means monuments without a picture. And no, all pictures of monuments are welcome. It might be nice, if there are already pictures of the monument itself to focus a bit more on details, or view from another site. If allowed by the site, interior pictures are also welcome. Al those pictures can then be used to illustrate an article about the monument. Akoopal (talk) 07:52, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

When will uploads show on the map? I uploaded quite a few photos of the MS Delta (38751) this afternoon and am wondering when I'll be able to see them on the map. Waiting for those red cameras to turn to green signs.

Thanks,

NORTH EAST "WIKI LOVES MONUMENTS"

Please explain why your list does not include more monuments and Historic Landmarks to take photos of in the NORTH EAST region of the USA (BOSTON, CAMBRIDGE...).

Besides being great fun (thanks for that !), doesn't this contest mainly exist to illustrate WIKIPEDIA entries with the best possible photographs ? Does this mean that whatever photo already exist for places NOT mentioned in your list are deemed satisfactory ?

Thank you !

The lists of monuments used in this contest are all official lists. In the U.S. the lists are from the National Register of Historic Places. You may photograph and upload photos of any of the sites on these lists, but we especially love photos of those sites where we haven't had a photo before. Better photos of sites where we did already have photos are also appreciated, and may be used in articles or tables on Wikipedia. If there are sites that are not on the lists that you wish to photograph, please do and upload load them with the regular upload wizard. Those photos will be appreciated, but will not be a part of the contest. Smallbones (talk) 15:13, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

upload photo to "Wiki Loves Monuments"

(Question transferred from Commons:Help desk)

I went to the Wiki Loves Monuments project and went to the "Find a monument to photograph" page to find one to shoot nearby. I found one with a white pin that needed a photo and I went out and got the shot to upload, clicked on the white pin and followed the instructions to upload the photo which BTW is location ID 97001497. I know my photo went somewhere, but after some research I found it landed in Wikimedia Commons (although I started in Wikipedia) and the white pin where I thought I was uploading the photo is still white now, 2 days later. Am I missing something here? Or does it just take longer than I expected for such content to find its home? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ceh2624 (talk • contribs) 21:49, 28 August 2013‎ (UTC)

Bank of Pilot Mountain
The only thing that you are missing is that the contest starts on September 1. All the photos are uploaded to Commons, which is the sister site of Wikipedia. The white pins will not likely be updated during the contest. I could be wrong on this, but it looks like it would be a huge amount of work. I've put the photo into the right list on Wikipedia. In general, during the contest, I expect the placement of new pix into Wikipedia might take anywhere between 2 days and a week, but there are no guarantees on this. BTW, it's a very nice photo! Best of luck in the forthcoming contest! Smallbones (talk) 00:40, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Jumped the gun

Jump the gun again? Knowing the contest started on September 1 and seeing no reference to a specific time zone, I arrived at a logical assumption that the contest started at 00:00 UTC. On Sept. 1 at 01:24 UTC I added three photos to be entered into the contest. Was that too early? I ask that because those photos are not included in the list of photos entered. They are for location ID 83001881. --Ceh2624 (talk) 03:35, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

New York monuments

I've tried to used your "Find a Monument" page in both the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers and find that there seem to be no monuments listed for New York. Clicking the New York box results in nothing happening. Other states work OK. Am I missing something?

Whoops! I'll make sure the right people know about this. For now try National Register of Historic Places listings in New York on Wikipedia and click the county you're interested in. Not in ASI Website

Can't I upload a photo Which is not in Archaeological Survey of India Website or Wiki Page as u listed.Svpnikhil (talk) 14:38, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

In general Wiki Loves Monuments photos need to be on one of the official lists provided by the organizers. But you can upload any photo that you've taken directly to Commons, outside of the WLM contest. Just click the "Upload file" link in the column on the left of this page (or any page in Commons). Please be prepared to describe the photo, its location and significance. You'll need to select a free license (CC-BY-SA will do just fine). We'd love to have your photo, but if it's not on the official list it cannot be in the WLM contest. Smallbones (talk) 00:44, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

I am not familiar with the contest in India, but to get the monument in the “official” list, I guess you have to contact whoever is conducting the Archaeological Survey of India. Wiki Loves Monuments is just reproducing those lists. --Alex (talk) 20:45, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons

If I uploaded a photo through the normal Wikimedia Commons upload but want to enter it in the Wiki Loves Monuments also, what should I do now? Note - I submitted this question on the Wiki Loves Monuments question submittal form and received an email back saying to check for a feedback at http://wikilovesmonuments.us - but my browser says this website is unavailable. --Mjrmtg (talk) 20:37, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

The website is back up and running after a brief break - it must be getting tired with so many photos uploaded! Ask there now, different countries may have different policies on this, but you'll almost certainly need the NRHP reference number, which you can get on the site's map, and a couple of Commons categories to place in the file. Smallbones (talk) 00:48, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
Hello Mjrmtg, The criteria for participation is that it is uploaded in September, contains this template, if it is a monument in the USA (it would have {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013|us}}) and also contains a second template for identifying the monument (for the USA is that Template:NRHP). Romaine (talk) 18:19, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
Thank you both for your information :) --Mjrmtg (talk) 20:07, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Available Monuments

I'm a little confused on what monuments can be photographed! According to the availablle map, there are MANY more monuments that are not listed. For Example: I live in the Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio, and there are numerous places, or monuments that are not listed, for example, there is an old railroad tressel near Comfort Texas that is no longer in use. It was actually used in the film, "The Newton Boys, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Newton_Boys) May I photograph something like this? It is definitely classified as a "Historical Landmark"! Thanks for your time! Jim Peterson Email address, bonafidetexan@gmail.com

Feel free to photograph any landmark you'd like, and upload the photos using the "upload file" link in the left hand column if they are not on the official list for this contest. WLM uses the National Register of Historic Places for the US, and there are many landmarks and monuments that are not listed by the NRHP, but it's a very good place to start! I've noticed that all 10 of the NRHP sites in Kendall County are already illustrated, but if you can get better photos, that would be wonderful. For Bexar County, see National Register of Historic Places listings in Bexar County, Texas there are 39 sites that need photos. We really need photographers in Texas! Only about half of the 3,143 NRHP sites have been illustrated. Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it, is to photograph the other 1,570 sites! "New" photos of places that no longer exist.

While it's nice to have a photo contest for monuments that currently exist, the contest seems to exclude deserving subjects that no longer exist but still have historical significance.

The contest judging criteria considers three areas. Technical excellence, Originality and creativity and Encyclopedic value for Wikipedia. Sadly, there is a barrier to taking photos of places that don't exist anymore and that is that they no longer exist. The only alternative is to submit a photo taken when the subject was still in existence, which presents the problem of whether or not a photo is worthy of submission since photos taken at a previous time could not anticipate being taken for the purpose of being entered into a contest and yet have merit. Photos taken for the purpose of contest entry have a distinct advantage over "best available photos".

What I'm getting at is this: I Photoshopped a 60 year old daytime picture of a Drive-In theater to create a photo of what the Drive-In would look like at night. It required a lot of alteration and creativity and it turned out great! I wasn't alive 60 years ago to take the original photo which is now in the Public Domain, but it is, essentially, a new photo. I have never seen a photo of this famous and spectacular "monument" showing the neon signage glowing in original colors as all existing photos were either shot in black and white or taken in daylight.

I would like to enter this photo in the contest since it embodies all three essential criteria but I'm not sure that it would not be disqualified by a strict application of some rule.

Please advise..... Thanks!

Please upload the photo - it sounds great, but it won't be included in the contest itself. Just upload using the "upload file" link in the left hand column. The rule is that for the contest you can only upload photos that you've taken yourself. Every contest has some limits, but we're sorry that our limits exclude your photo. Commons does not exclude your photo, however. Smallbones (talk) 10:11, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

No, this helps to identify the photo as a photo of a monument (in India). Which is one of the criterias for Wiki Loves Monuments. The others are that it is your own work and that you have uploaded it in September. To indicate that your photo should take part in Wiki Loves Monuments you also have to add the {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013}} template. --Alex (talk) 08:43, 8 September 2013 (UTC) PS: You might want to have a look at meta:Help:Signature.
To be clear, a picture likeFile:Thrones in Airavatesvara Temple,Tharasuram.JPG does how satisfy all criteria to participate. Akoopal (talk) 08:50, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

I participated in the Wikipedia Takes Brooklyn event at the Brooklyn Public Library. I uploaded a photo of the parachute jump in Coney Island and got a message that you needed my email address. I tried to go back to re-enter my email address but could not figure out how to do it.

Go to preferences on the top right. In the first tab (User Profile) in the bottom, make sure that an e-mail address is there (also important if you ever need to reset your password), and make sure the first option 'Enable email from other users' is selected. Sites Not Included

Why are the US Capitol Bldg. and the US Marines Memorial(Iwo Jima) not pinned on the map of D.C. & Arlington, VA?

Believe it or not, it is because they are not recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. The NRHP has its quirks - but we have to use some official list - otherwise the contest might come down to "I like this site so it should be recognized as historic." The Capitol Building is especially bizarre in its non-NRHP status. It is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, and all NHLs - except 3 - are also listed on the NRHP. It's written into the law, including the 3 exceptions. These 3 are the Capitol, the Supreme Court Building, and the White House. The law doesn't explain why this is the case, but my theory is that it's related to the separation of powers built into the constitution. It might be unconstitutional for the executive, through the National Park Service and the NRHP, to have any control over the Capitol Building, which is managed by a congressional appointee, the Architect of the Capitol. Everything clear? Probably not, but I'll just say that you've stumbled into the most bizarre of the NRHP's many quirks. BTW, you should upload the photos via the "Capitol Hill Historic District" which is really about the neighborhood to the east of the Capitol, but somehow includes the land around (and maybe even under) the Capitol building. Photo not correct on list?

If the photo that is shown is not of the site can I and how do I enter a correct photo?

Please let us know the historic site and why you think the earlier photo is not of the correct site. Quite often this can be verified via Google Streetview, or perhaps via some copyrighted photos (that we can't upload here). If the site is in the US, please leave a note at WT:NRHP and you'll get help right away. Otherwise try to contact the organizers in your home country. We are trying to find out what the oldest building in Senatobia Mississippi. Could ya'll please help. Thank you

Sorry, that's a bit beyond the scope of the photo contest, but here's a suggestion for your research:
Go to the website NRHP Focus at http://nrhp.focus.nps.gov/natreghome.do?searchtype=natreghome
Search just for State= Mississippi and County=Tate and you will get all 10 sites listed by the NRHP in the county. Each one will have a text pdf and a photo pdf listed, once you click the site's name. Read the very long "Nomination form" and for all the 8 historic districts there should be a list of buildings, giving you a summary of what the NRHP knows about it. For example in the Downtown Historic District they list
105-107 South Center Street as having been built c. 1880-85. There are about 6 other buildings (of 50-60 listed) in that HD that have similar construction dates. Check all the nomination forms and you should come up with a pretty good answer. Best of luck and send photos! Smallbones (talk) 22:10, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Re: Sites Not Included

Why are the US Capitol Bldg. and the US Marines Memorial(Iwo Jima) not pinned on the map of D.C. & Arlington, VA?

For the Iwo Jima statue upload to "Marine Corps Base Quantico" [1] Smallbones (talk) 20:44, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Wrong, wrong, Wrong!!

I repeat: Why is the U.S. Marines Memorial(Iwo Jima) NOT pinned on the Arlington, Virginia map. This most famous monument is formally, officially AND geographically located in Arlington, Virginia north of Arlington Cemetery.

Please fix this. Very Respectfully, MM

Please go to the NRHP focus system at http://nrhp.focus.nps.gov/natreghome.do?searchtype=natreghome
Enter state=Virginia County=Arlington then search and all the NRHP sites in Arlington will appear, perhaps with a different name than you'd like. I can't find the Iwo Jima Monument there, but if you can, please let me know here. I can't put the site on the official list on my own, I'm just a volunteer here. Contact your congressman and he or she might be able to do something, but I doubt it would take effect before the end of the contest. Smallbones (talk) 01:52, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Very sorry, but these sites do not show that the statue is listed on the NRHP, which is a requirement for a site to be listed for this contest in the US. You should upload your photos of this site via the Upload file link in the left hand column, but it can't be part of the contest unless it is officially listed by the NRHP. Isn't the ID compulsory?

I see lots of pictures without any id or even template, like for instance [2]. The full list for Romania is [3]. Is this supposed to happen? If I remember correctly, in 2011 and 2012 it was compulsory to have an id.--Strainu (talk) 15:38, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Images should have an ID. If the ID and the ID template are missing those should be added. Romaine (talk) 19:55, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
I know that, I was asking if the upload wizard is enforcing this requirement.--Strainu (talk) 19:03, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
I can confirm the problem: you can upload images with the wizard while leaving the ID field empty, it won't be chcked. This allowed a number of inappropriate images to be submited (Nicubunu (talk) 14:24, 19 September 2013 (UTC))

Green puzzle icons in search for monuments

Hi, this may have been asked before but I was looking for the red icons as directed in my area and I see the green puzzle piece ones as well..are those eligible for taking pics of as well? Or are the red ones the only ones eligible for contest? Because I have a red one near me but the place has been bulldozed, so do you want a picture of an empty lot? please help clarify-thanks

In the US we think the photos of the empty lots are useful. Other countries may differ. The idea is that at least we know that the building is no longer there. Then people can concentrate on finding a photo in archives or something similar, and they won't travel 100s of miles to try to find something that's not there. Please do check that you have he right address *and* coordinates though, it might just be hiding around the corner! Hope this helps. Smallbones (talk) 19:27, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Map Icons placed incorrectly on the map

Hi, Just wondering if there is a way to "clean-up" where the map icons are on the map when you search for nearby monuments. Many of the icons in my area (Raleigh, NC) are not located correctly on the map. I know where a lot of these monuments are, but they may be throwing off would-be photographers as the icon appears up to 1/2 mile away from the actual monument location.. I'd love to help place these correctly, but did not see anywhere to help with that...

John

Usually the coordinates are within 100 yards of the site. A problem came about in the 1960s when the geological survey made some "minor" corrections to their system, so some older coords are just off a bit. Do check the addresses as well, believe it or not, over the decades addresses do change, even if the building stays in the same place. Streets are added or rerouted as development comes in. Renumbering happens. For the coords, please go to a list like en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Orange County, North Carolina and make the changes there. But please be sure that your changes are correct - that's another source of error in the coords - people making "corrections." Smallbones (talk) 19:34, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I see now why the icons could be off. I figured they were being located simply by addresses when they are actually listed by coords. Lots of the addresses have certainly changed over time, especially downtown in any city, coordinates are probably a better way to locate them! :) Thanks
We don't usually say where our coords come from. We get many from NRHP, but they too are silent about their sources. Often NRHP or someone else gets it from the mailing address of the church or other organization which I sometimes find a mile away from the designated building. I get my coords from Google Earth aerials. Not the Google databases of notable locations which are even less reliable than NRHP. Not from Google Street View directly, since that has even more errors (though usually smaller). Where that doesn't help, MS Bing Maps. Sometimes I hop on my bike and pedal out to see. And sometimes, as recently in Brooklyn pix by our friend Smallbones, I find an alleged camera location that's actually an object location, and slightly off as well, and then I correct it to a much worse one. So, we keep going, hoping our corrections do more good than harm. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:29, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

uploads not showing on WLM map

I have uploaded several photos on the WLM map but none are showing I have found out that the photos in question were successfully uploaded on to wikimedia commons why are they not showing?

Changing "unillustrated" to "illustrated" on the map will take some time - I'd say at least a week. I'm actually surprised that they are changing them at all during the course of the contest, because there is a lot of work involved. 1st the photo has to be uploaded, then a bot separates out the previously "unillustrated" ones, which are then posted for volunteers to check, e.g. which of the perhaps several pix of a previously unillustrated site should go in the tables, checking categorization, and - along the way - does the photo match the site description. This checking can take several days by itself. Then the database feeding the map has to be changed. All in all ... it just takes time. Smallbones (talk) 14:57, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank You for the Info now I understand hope mine make the cut!

A question about the contest.

I'm not quite understanding the competition. If you upload pictures of a Historical Site it is then judge upon first in the US, but is that per state or is that all in all? For example, i take a photo of an old mission here in Arizona, someone else take a picture of a old mission in Texas. They are then voted on by a panel as to which one is better? Even though they are both from a separate state. Then of those voted on the top 10 go against the top 10 of other countries. Then the top 3 of the world are chosen and given the prize money? I think that's what the rules were saying for the www.wikilovesmonuments.org, is my thinking correct? If so then my idea of hitting a small mining town here in Arizona, that needs photos taken, and uploading them ALL is a bad idea. I should then only upload a couple and save the rest for other months, correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zertoil (talk • contribs) 21:07, 16. Sep. 2013 (UTC)

Basicly, yes. I am not sure how the judging process within the USA works, but once the US jury agreed about their ten photos they will compete with those from all over the world. (Ten photos per country, that’s the rule. See Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013/Participating countries for a list of participating countries in 2013.) At least in theory it is possible that the jury nominates two photos of the exact same building (e.g. the very old mission in Arizona). The competition is about photos, not the monuments they show. For the prize “money”, see http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/awards/. Uploading photos of places that need to be taken, is never a bad idea. You will give the world a free photo of that place. After all, that’s what the contest is really all about. And, by the way, Wiki Loves Monuments, is only running in September. --Alex (talk) 20:50, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

The Final Step!

Dazspell (talk) 03:49, 18 September 2013 (UTC) Hello, I have uploaded 4 pictures and got to the use part and every time your site says STOP you need to verify your email address, WELL I have already verified my email address. AND my pictures are not showing up, they should be as follows Scott County Courthouse Missouri; The Sikeston Depot, Missouri; Giant City Stone Fort Wall, Illinois; Giant City Lodge, Illinois. I want to participate in your contest but your sites lack of continuity is preventing my pics from finishing the loading. Thank you, DazSpell Darlene Spell dazspell@yahoo.com

You can ignore the "Verify your e-mail address" notice after the 1st time you've verified your e-mail address.
The photos are not automatically loaded into the tables, but are checked by actual human beings first. See explanation above. I've placed all 4 of your photos in the county tables, but in general it can take as long as a week, definitely more than 8 minutes. Send more photos! We need more photos in your area. Is it possible to participate with images already uploaded to Commons?

I've recently (i.e. in September...) uploaded a couple of pictures to Commons without using the WLM entry assistant. Is it still possible for me to contribute to the contest with these images? Is there something like a category or tag I could add? Thanks! Martin Falbisoner (talk) 11:49, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

For U.S. photos that you've taken (whatever date) and uploaded in Sept. 2013, try {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013|us}}[[Category:WLM 2013 United States unreviewed]] [[Category:National Register of Historic Places]], (or, if you know what county it is in [[Category:National Register of Historic Places in Nameof County, NameofState]]) together with {{NRHP|xxxxx}} where xxxxx is the NRHP reference number. You can get the reference number from the Wikipedia article on the site. The county tables also have it in the source code (but not displayed), or query the website "NRHP focus" ~~~~

Contributions

Odd thing happening. I understand that my contributions will not show on the map for a while, but what is odd is that every time I log in to check if they are up, the images I uploaded do not show up listed under the Contributions area of my User Page. When I go and try to upload the images again, the map says they have already been uploaded and then when I check, they miraculously show up listed under my User Page. These two images are the only contributions I have ever uploaded to Wiki. Could that be the problem?

Ingress

Have you heard of a Google game for Android phones called Ingress? It is in beta, but from that game alone, they probably have a massive database of millions of historic places that you might ask them to make available to your project. Players have been actively taking pictures and submitting pictures of historic places since the game began last November.

Privately owned

Many sites listed in the NRHP are privately-owned. (Example NRHP Inventory Form might list Ownership as Private, and possibly not Accessible To The Public) Can photographs of such sites be used? If the owner gives permission to photograph from a point on private property, is some type of documentation necessary? Jscott (talk) 20:34, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Yes, this is possible, photo's of buildings before 1990 are considered public domain, you can find information for the United states here. This is different for other countries, for information you can also look at that page. Akoopal (talk) 21:40, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
In the US there's no reason to worry about this at all. If you are taking a picture of a historic building from a public place, copyright just does not apply except for your ownership of the copyright of the photo. If you are taking a picture from a private space, you still have copyright of the photo, unless you've made an agreement otherwise (say with the property owner). Your copyright is the only thing considered for the contest. Please don't trespass, break into buildings etc. - the property owner may by able to sue you or even send you to jail - but that's between you and the property owner. We assume good faith on your part, and will generally accept your statement that you own the copyright, and not assume that you're being sued by the property owner. The address for the Samuel Harrison House should be 82 (and not 80) Third St, Pittsfield, MA. I didn't see a way to correct or report the error so that it can be corrected. Another instance is the Allen House which is located on Wendell Ave Extension. At a later date the street address will need to be added. What should be done in cases like this?

California Historical Landmarks?

What is the correct way to upload and tag images of California Historical Landmarks for WLM 2013? When I follow the "Find a Monument" links from the new Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United States page, they take me back to last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in the United States/California page. The county pages in these lists have upload links only for the NHR places, not for the CHL places.

I tried various links to upload my images and tried to patch their tags and categories manually as best as I could, but how will I know if the tags are correct and the images will be approved?

Missing Historical Building

Dear Sir or Madame,

What should we do if, upon reaching the location of a Red Pin, we discover the Historic Building is no longer standing or has been replaced by modern construction?

128.4.96.220 19:52, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

In that case, then I think there's no image to capture then. If the reconstructed building is in replacement of the old one, then perhaps its a good idea to capture. But if its a totally new building which has not relationship with the previous one that existed, I don't think it'll be a great idea to capture. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:18, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

ID issues

There are two things I don't understand. First time, when I uploaded 13 photos, ID was necessary to be written in the field predicted for it. A few days ago, I uploaded around 12 new photos, and ID was not asked for? Why is that? And, when I go to statistics list, I can see that other's users number of entries is becoming bigger, but mine still stands on 13, when I have uploaded more than 20. What is the problem??? Emir Mehović (talk) 20:50, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Jack prestridge (talk) 00:36, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

When you upload using the country specific upload wizard, entering ID might be required as you said. But using the generic UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons, there's no asking of ID. What statistics list you referring to? If you happen to not find your images in the category you expect to, then perhaps you didn't assign those images to the specific category. Perhaps you can double check if the images are assigned to the category you want. You can find the category a file is in when you scroll down to the bottom page of the image file in context. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:23, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, I have SEVERAL PICS of monuments that I've been trying to upload using the MOBILE APP -through INCOMPLETE UPLOADS- and the WIRELESS connection at home, but even if I try to do so with only one, and not all selected at the same time, it just keep logging off and going to the mobile main screen. How it can be SOLVED in order to UPLOAD the pictures??

Kurara (talk) 08:18, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

I have personally also had issues with the mobile app. My solution? I upload using my browser. I switch to desktop mode and I'm good to go. Finding solutions as to why it might not be working on your device might be lengthier than jumping over to the website via browser and uploading through there. It might be tedious, but it'll save you the headaches. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:27, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

A few of the coordinates for the historic sites are incorrect. For example, the Clubhouse-Student Union in Greeley Colorado; the coordinates put it out on a rural road in Johnstown (at least 10 miles away). This is also true on your interactive map (there is no Student Union building there as there has never been a college there). This is also true of the Jergens Site; it is a privately owned field/farm. I'm guessing this may be a large part of the reason there are no photographs of these sites.

Here are the correct coordinates for the Clubhouse-Student Union (which has been called Gray Hall since 1965): 40.409614,-104.692624

Change my name

Hi, Please help Urgent!

I created an account on Commons but was unaware that this name would be the byline for my pix. So I requested that the username be changed from janekszy to my full name Janek Szymanowski. This was done - great!

When I went in yesterday (Friday) and uploaded about 100 new pix I did not login with the new username (computer auto inserted old details) so the pix are not reflected to my name Janek Szymanowski but they are there in janekszy contributions.

I have tried every which way to move/delete re-upload to correct name etc but no luck.

If someone can delete the pix on janekszy then I don't mind uploading again to Janek Szymanowski so that Wiki does not say it is duplicate content.

Or if there is some way to move them immediately, that would be better still. Thanks and Regards, Janek

nachträgliche Kategorisierung

Question ID 296

I did a mistake is there a path to resolve it ?

Question ID 296

Dear Madam/ Sir,

Have a very nice day,

During the period of Sep/1st to Sep/30th 2013 I created an account and I uploaded abit less than 100 pictures. But I did a Mistake : I did not went through the list to upload them: I opened just my account and I uploaded them.

I am writing to ask if there is any solution to solve that: my name does'nt appear in the participant list and my pictures too. You can check my photos here and verify what I said in the following link:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AListFiles&limit=100&user=IssamBarhoumi&ilshowall=1

Finally, I have to thank you for your understanding.

Your faithfully, Issam Barhoumi issam.barhoumi@laposte.net

Hi Issam,
Thanks for you question, I want to inform you that The Ribat of Sousse is not a monument from the official list in Tunisia. However the rest of photos are eligible to the contest. I will fix the issue ! Regards --— D Y O L F 77[Talk] 12:03, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Reg. Template usage of {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013}} with automatic allocation to this categ.

I have recently uploaded ~ 300 photos from Nuremberg and Ansbach during this month and don't know which ones are monuments and which are not. Figuring out wheather an object is a monument or not by myself takes too much time for me, locals can do it in "no time". Althouth, the photographs were done with that purpose ("as part of the WLM project"). Should I just insert the template in each file or not? (tried to discuss it hiere: Category talk:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2013#When to use it? but didn't get an answer since 13 September 2013) --Mattes (talk) 14:48, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

October, end of October 2013 is the final judgement of pictures?

I am really confused by this "contest" and understood it to be something that people entered using pictures of their own choice that they have taken over this year, 2013. I also understood, what little I was able to understand about the rules, that we submitted pictures on our own, to judges that were plucked from the International Wiki employee roster - I did NOT understand that there was this huge requirement of personal time and working in committees and submitting photos that the 5 people who somehow appeared as "Officials" or "Official Judges" for my country were sending people out, assigning photos of monuments that needed to be photographed rather than a contest in which we submitted photos of our own choice and that we had until the end of October, 2013 to submit them.

I took photos of mostly PWA buildings in the capitol of the USA - but many of my photos are different for they are angular and taken so that, for example, the viewer simply sees th e intricate bronze, metalworked, swirl on the post of a PWA building, or the detail, angularly shot of a striking or unique item rarely noticed on one figure in a bronze statue that consists of 7 Soldiers and a Military Steed, mounted, w/ sword striking noticeably in mid-air, sword and soldier that is supposed to be the real focal point, what stands out and impresses the casually passing viewer - my pictures consist of the details that make these historical items, statues, buildings... not only memorials to those who went before us, blazing the historical trail that has been heavily tread upon by Americans who have forged the path thea at has lead us to where we are at in this stage of the development of our country.

Is there absolutely no way that I could submit my photos for consideration and judging for the 2013 Wiki Loves Monuments Contest During the next week? Or, must I wait until next year and then, if I choose to enter pictures, does it require heavy interaction w/ other members, photographing assigned monuments, creating facebook pages, etc organization and group formation/working together starting at the beginning of 2014?

Please clarify this for me. lmc

National contests handle these questions; see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United States which leads you to a site set up just for the USA. No, you don't have to ask to be assigned a target but a picture that doesn't illustrate an article hasn't much chance. No, the photographer needn't spend a lot of time on organization. That's for the judges, poor devils. Yes, though overall building photos tend to be most useful, details can also illustrate, thus have a chance. And yes, it's too late. As it happened, though I have uploaded several hundred new pictures this year, only a few were submitted to the contest, partly because I don't do pix of prize quality, despite their (I think) usefulness to illustrate Wikipedia articles. I certainly wouldn't hold back all year to await the next contest. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:23, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Just wanted to clarify a bit more: if you want your images to participate in the Wiki Loves Monuments contest, you need to wait until September 2014. If that doesn't matter to you, you can upload them now. (WLM for 2013 has ended). —Mono 02:49, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

I was lucky enough to win seventh prize in the Saxony category this year. The prize promised was thirty Euro as a book token or similar. So far I have received no information about the prize, and no prize. Any information about when the prizes will be awarded / issued?
