WLM 2024 | Participating countries | Uploaded images | Organizers | FAQ | Help desk | For organizers |
In September and October, the Wiki Loves Monuments is taking place in about 40 countries. All over the world people cooperate to take photographs of monuments and upload these to Wikimedia Commons. Sometimes new uploaders come across difficulties. If you have any please let us help you. Ask your questions. Please provide us with useful information, such as the country you are trying to participate in or maybe the pictures you have already uploaded. This is a multilingual page, you can write here in English or, if you prefer, in other languages of participating countries. |

Is WLM Rwanda 2024 part of this contest?
[edit]What is the status of Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Rwanda? The page appears to have been created by an individual outside typical WLM processes, and doesn't appear to be formatted properly (broken links and missing images, stray references to Uganda, no jury selected, etc). - Hi @Omphalographer, thank you for calling this to our attention.
- I am not sure the international team has been aware of their participation in WLM 2024, but there are files in the category connected to the initiative. I pinged some colleagues from Rwanda to help clarify the situation, and help them evaluate, iterate and improve on their project.
- Are there any other actions you would suggest need to be taken? I would recommend leaving the page largely intact, because clearly there have been activities (as for instance their gathering for the WLM 2024 launch) undertaken. Ciell (talk) 11:12, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- One of my major concerns here is that it's not clear that there are any freely photographable monuments in Rwanda. Rwanda does not provide for freedom of panorama, and has a copyright term of life + 50 years; given the history of the country, this means that nearly all monuments, sculptures, and architectural works in the country are still protected by copyright. As such, almost every photograph in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Rwanda is likely to constitute a copyright violation.
- Beyond that, I'd like to make sure that there's appropriate followup on the contest. If organizers promised that participants' images would be judged and/or awarded, we need to follow through with that in some form, even if the submissions were technically ineligible for FOP reasons. - Fair enough. I already brought this to the attention of organizers in Rwanda, though not specifically involved in this photo-competition. I hope they or their networks can come back to you with their response soon. Ciell (talk) 09:29, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
